David Carradine

Actor David Carradine was laid to rest yesterday at the Forrest Lawn Cemetary in L.A. The funeral lasted for more than two hours and was attended by more than 400 mourners, including Lucy Liu, Tom Selleck, Daryl Hannah, and Jane Seymour.

Carradine’s brothers Bruce and Keith were also in attendance.

A statement released last week by a private pathologist has ruled out suicide as the cause of death. Thai authorities continue to investigate.

It still makes me sad. Listening to the interview Quentin Tarrantino gave to Larry King just a few days after Carradine passed away, I couldn’t help but agree with Tarrantino’s assesment that Carradine was one of those “mad geniuses” of Hollywood. Akin to Christopher Walkin or Dennis Hopper, he was someone so over-the-top and unique that he made any role he played instantly entertaining, regardless of whether or not the film or show itself was crap or quality.

Rest in peace, grasshopper.

In a possibly ironic twist of fate, one of late actor David Carradine’s final films centered around suicide.

In My Suicide, the late actor plays a wise old man described as “the poet of death,” who counsels a high schooler (Gabriel Sunday) who’s contemplating killing himself.

One scene features Carradine delivering a lengthy monologue, trying to explain to the teen boy that he should “kill” off the parts of himself he doesn’t like rather than committing suicide.

A producer of the film is nonprofit Regenerate Films, which is dedicated to preventing teen suicide.

The film won Best Picture at the Berlin Film Festival as well as Best Picture and Best Actor (for Sunday) at the Gen art festival in NYC. A release date for the film has not yet been set.

Details around Carradine’s death remain sketchy. The actor was found naked in a closet in a Bangkok hotel with a rope tied around his neck, wrists, and genitals. His family have asked the FBI to investigate whether or not the actor’s death was a suicide, but many continue to speculate that he died while performing an act of auto erotic asphyxiation.

According to papers filed by his ex-wife during 2003 divorce proceedings, Carradine had a history of indulging in “potentially deadly” kinky sex acts. She also claims that he would grope her and encourage her to flash strangers in public, and carried on a long term incestuous relationship with a “very close relative”.

File this right up there with “Walking in on Your Parents Having Sex” under “More Things You Wish You Didn’t Know.”

Paging Law & Order! I hope you’re getting to work on this ripped-from-the-headlines script, because there are some fascinating development in the mysterious death of David Carradine:

Now we know why David Carradine’s family thinks foul play may have been involved in the actors death — his manager tells us Carradine was found with his hands tied behind his back.

Chuck Binder, Carradine’s manager, tells us he firmly believes Carradine did not take his own life — nor does he think David died accidentally. Binder says the family has been told Carradine’s hands were immobilized by the rope.

Carradine was found by a hotel maid Thursday morning with a rope tied around his neck and another around his genitals in a Bangkok hotel room.

The Thai police are now admitting that his death may not have been a suicide, although they say there is no evidence of anyone else in the room at the time of his death. The theory, of course, is that Carradine was engaging in autoerotic asphyxiation, a dangerous kind of sex play.

Pornthip Rojanasunand, director of Thailand’s Central Institute of Forensic Science, said the circumstances suggested that Carradine may have died performing auto-erotic asphyxiation, which is said to result in a form of giddiness and euphoria — similar to alcohol or drug intoxication — that enhances the sexual experience.

“In some cases it can suggest murder, too. But sometimes when the victim is naked and in bondage, it can suggest that the victim is doing it to himself,” said Pornthip, who is considered the country’s top criminal forensics expert but who did not take part in the autopsy. “If you hang yourself by the neck, you don’t need so much pressure to kill yourself. Those who get highly sexually aroused tend to forget this fact.”

Oh, man. I just don’t know what to say about this. From what I’ve heard, I’m gonna go ahead and back the autoerotic asphyxiation theory. It’s not at all uncommon for this kind of sex play to result in accidental death. My guess, though, is that there was someone else in the room with him, who bolted after David died. The suicide theory doesn’t make sense here — no one kills themselves with a rope around their genitals.
