I don't like American football, so it should be no surprise that I didn't bother to turn on the TV for the Super Bowl last night - not even for the commercials (still haven't seen any!) or the Half-Time show, which is what most non-sports fans are actually in it for. Bruno Mars is a bit of a dodgy little troll, isn't he? The problem is, he's also a pretty good musician with some disgustingly catchy songs. People love this dude - he's not only performing at the Super Bowl halftime show, but now he's been named Billboard's Artist of the Year for 2013. Like, out of all artists.
Apparently his second album has sold 1.2 million copies since it was released a year ago this month. That seems... low, right? That's not a dig on Bruno, I just feel like when we hear about album sales, it's like, "Sold 60 million copies!" or whatever. Maybe I'm wrong on that one? Anyway, here...

Oh sadness. I'm not even going to go on a long-winded diatribe about how awful it is that we lost Amy Winehouse - a visionary, a musical magician - because it's all been said before, so I'm just going to let this here little video speak for itself. It's moving, it's poignant - it's Amy in the prime of her life and her career. Yeah, she's a little on the thin side, and yeah, all of these scenes were probably filmed while Amy was descending into the long, horrible journey known as drug and alcohol addiction, but we can look at these clips and appreciate Amy for who she was musically - an innovator (even if I'm not a huge fan of 'Our Time Will Come' itself). />

As for this song being on the Breaking Dawn soundtrack, I understand that the film execs want the most cutting-edge, the trendiest of musical acts, but this Bruno Mars character is a flash in the pan, trust me. I mean, remember the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack that came out in 1996 (I'm dating myself, I know)? It had some KILLER tracks on it. Garbage, Butthole Surfers, Radiohead ... solid stuff.
However, Bruno Mars is the Romeo + Juliet equivalent of Gavin Friday's 'Angel'. In fifteen years, people are going to say, "Yup, I remember I liked that song for about a minute. ... I was such a cheeseball."
