Everyone Is Doing A Bob Dylan Cover for Amnesty International

Do you guys dig Bob Dylan? Because, and don’t hate me, but I really, really don’t. Is that an unpopular opinion, to hate Bob Dylan? I mean, I don’t anything about his personal life or anything, all I know is that when I hear his voice I want to end it all. Is anybody with me?

Anyway, despite my active disgust with Bob Dylan’s voice, he actually has some pretty great songs. Take, for instance, Adele‘s cover of Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love” up there. Gorgeous, right? Well, Adele and 71 other artists (including the likes of Miley and Ke$ha, can you imagine?) are teaming up to cover a number of Bob Dylan’s songs for a tribute album called Chimes of Freedom. The proceeds are going to Amnesty International.

The songs I’m most excited about include, of course, Adele’s, but also Ziggy Marley’s “Blowin’ in the Wind,” Jack’s Mannequin’s “Mr. Tambourine Man,” but most of all Flogging Molly’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’.”

  • While I don’t mind Dylan, I don’t think he’s Gods gift to singing. I saw him at #7 in a Rolling Stone list of 100 Greatest Singers and I was spewing!

  • I’m not a huge fan of Bob Dylan, but I loved “I’m Not There.” Frankly, the covers from that movie are way better than I’m anticipating the ones above to be.

  • I think Bob Dylan being a genius songwriter and a terrible singer has been an established fact for what- forty years? More? Nothing new there.
What does have me concerned is seeing that Ke$ha is singing “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright”. That is one of my favorite songs ever. Ke$ha? Granted, she has a better voice than Bob Dylan, but, meh.

  • I feel it is a case of The Emperor’s New Clothes. No one wants to be the first to say his music is pedestrian at best and unintelligible at worst.

  • I always thought he was ctazily overated… I couldn’t stand his music when I was a young teenager and my father thought he was the bee’s knees.

His voice is irritating (to my mind, disingenuous, self-indulgent, draggy, often empty of a palpable, accessible feeling) and his lyrics, although some are very fine, can sound like pure stream of consciousness bs, or bafflegab…

The Emperor’s new clothes???????? Reader up there? I had the same thought Just a little maybe…

That being said, he has some brilliant stuff too, niched in with the other stuff. (Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands… beautiful chorus with, yes, palapble, identifyable feeling!!!)

I am reminded of Eric Clapton saying that he never got Dylan at all untill he made the album Blond on Blond.

And that’s my Bob bashing for the day.
