Mila Kunis Is So Pretty, Maybe Needs to Hush

A photo of Mila Kunis

Mila Kunis has been working her way into my heart lately. Sometime between 2005 when I developed my slow burning love for That 70’s Show and last week when she spoke Russian, she became one of my tip top favorite ladies. But now she did this interview with the British Glamour, and I think that maybe she might need to slow her roll, just a little.

From Glamour via Amy Grindhouse:

On being insanely attractive: ‘[Winning the Spike TV’s Guys’ Choice award this summer for the Holy Grail of Hot was] insane. Listen, I couldn’t be happier to get any of this, because I think it’s hysterical and it makes all my friends laugh. If somebody finds me attractive, God bless them, I think it’s fantastic.’

On dating rumors: ‘Being single, I find myself not being able to be in a room with a man without, the next day, I’m dating that man [according to the tabloids]. That happened for a solid six months [after Black Swan].’

On Justin Timberlake: ‘He’s incredibly funny, we laughed a lot on set… Humour is an amazing quality to have. I like sarcasm, satire, self-deprecating humour. But I also think there’s something to be said for not looking for anything and being pleasantly surprised.’

On dating Justin Timberlake: ‘[Rumours are] an unfortunate thing that comes with the circumstances, but there’s no truth to it whatsoever.’

On Hollywood: ‘No one’s curing cancer in this industry, remember? It’s not changing the world. It’s just entertainment, an art, a form of escapism. My friends and family are my number one thing in life, but you need a healthy balance. This is a phenomenal job, but the most important lesson I’ve learnt is that you never want to let your only source of happiness come from something that’s so filled with uncertainty.’

On weight loss: ‘I’m a huge foodie, I love food. But when people say, ‘I can’t lose weight’, no no no, you can. Your body can do everything and anything, you just have to want to do it.’

I think that Mila’s charming, I do. The whole “if somebody finds me attractive, God bless them” bit? So adorable. But I don’t think it’s entirely fair for a woman who’s immeasurably gifted, genetically, who’s never struggled with her weight, at least not in a major way, and who has the means to hire trainers and buy healthier foods to call every single person who actually does struggle with weight out like this. I’m not saying there’s no truth to what she’s saying, I think there definitely definitely is, I just don’t think it sounds right coming from someone like Mila.

Thoughts?

  • I get the concern, but c’mon, if she can use her influence to help a few folks who struggle with weight to be inspired and understand that they can loose weight if they do what is necessary (which is NOT a 2 week bit at the gym and the ensuing depressing because one doesn’t lose 60 lbs), let her do it. I get the point you are making Emily, but for most folks, the issue isn’t so much the struggle, it’s the willpower to do all that is needed to lose weight. Medical conditions excluded, most folks just need the right plan and need to stick to it. So, Mila, I am with you. Encouraging others to lose weight is a double-good thing.

  • She is completely correct. Carrots are cheaper than chips and it’s free to run outside. “I don’t have enough money to be fit” is an excuse lazy people use. At the end of the day, you either choose to stop buying bigger pants and put the fork down or you don’t.

    • When you work 12 hours a day for the minimum wage, finding the spare time to go for a run outside and buy fresh food is almost a miracle. I mean, you can get a burger for $1 a McDonald’s and feed yourself. If you had to live on the minimum wage, what would you do? It’s not that easy, at all.

      • just change the way you look at things. you can wake up 10 min earlier and make something healthy at home to take to work… you can change your bus stop to the one before you normally use and walk more. it’s not easy, but it is a choice. a choice to make an effort.

  • She never said it was easy, she just said it’s possible, which is a fact. I don’t see a problem with it.

  • Oh, Mila DOES work hard to keep healthy. All this ‘they are naturally fit and have a fast metabolism’ stuff is complete bullsh*t. She, along with many other actresses, have worked hard for years to maintain a nice physique.

I used to have a weight problem, had a hard time shedding the pounds, but now I’m at a good weight and really happy about it. It’s definitely possible, Mila is completely right.

And she’s not ‘calling’ people out, as you seem to think. In her usual frank and sincere manner, she’s encouraging everybody.

  • She ‘needs to hush?’ I think people in general who complain about being overweight, despite not making a real effort to change, need to hush.

Sure, there are people with genetic difficulties which makes it harder for them to lose weight. But certainly not impossible. 62% of Americans are overweight … so are we saying that 62% of then are genetically not suited for being lean, or too poor to afford vegetables?

    • ARGH. Genetic difficulties? You left out “PCOS” (5-10% of women) and “pituitary tumors.”

Gain 40 pounds in one month, spend the next five years killing yourself to lose it, and then we’ll talk, Mila Kunis.

      • i had PCOS and let me tell you that is no excuse. i started gaining some weight and then i went to my gynaecologist and she put me on the pill. for a few months i was a BIT heavier than before but with a healthy diet and exercise all the excess weight and more went away.

  • The most difficult part of any life changing measures a person can undertake (weight loss, quitting smoking/drinking/drugs, etc.) is the mental aspect.

ALL smokers, once they’ve smoked for any length of time, know they should quit and would like to quit. But it’s EXTREMELY difficult to start and stay with it.

  • Actually, I think she’s more qualified than most people to say it. You look at her and you can tell that’s she already gorgeous and incredibly in shape. Actress-thin is thinner than regular-people-thin. She already has to work to keep her figure as it is, I’m sure with plenty of exercise a day and eating right. Girl doesn’t have twenty pounds to lose, so to do that she really must’ve had to work hard – as in hours of working out a day and downsizing her portions even more.

And as for the McDonald’s-is-cheaper-than-the-market excuse – well, McDonald’s and other fast food companies are working on creating healthier menus and options. So if you have to go McDonald’s, you can get a salad with dressing on the side instead of a BigMac.

If you want to lose weight, really want it enough, you find the time to work out. You can go for a five- or ten-minute run and do a handful of push-ups/sit-ups/jumping-jacks throughout the day.

Losing weight takes a while, but it’s possible.

And I say all of this as someone who could afford to lose a few pounds, and would like to, but is not quite motivated enough to actually do it.

  • I have been morbidly obese, and now I am at a healthy weight. So hopefully that makes me somewhat qualified to say that it can be done by nearly anyone. 100 lbs ago I would not have thought so, but with enough dedication and sacrifice it can be done.

I have no problem with Mila saying this…though perhaps I would have had an issue with that before I lost weight.

    • i think you just hit the nail in the head. i am no generalizing but some people might get angry or offended when reading mila’s quote because they are angry at themselves for not sticking to a healthy diet and exercise. i know how hard it is to lose weight, i’ve never been fat but that doesn’t mean it’s not hard to maintain a healthy weight. i exercise 5 times a week for 30min, i eat carbs only twice a week. apart from that my whole diet consists on veggies, protein, fruits and some dairy. i eat what i want on sundays and it feels good, because it’s like a reward, if you abuse something (anything) it just stops being satisfactory.

congratulations on your amazing weight loss blue!!

  • I don’t see anything wrong with anything she said. Every other word uttered by someone in the media, ususally celebrities, ticks off somebody else. She was asked a question and answered it based on her thought process.

True, maybe she doesn’t know the struggle of being overweight but she didnt say anything than every trainer, exercise guru, etc, has said. “You can lose weight if you want to. You can do it!”. And speaking as an overweight person, no ,its not that simple but everyone is entitled to their own notions even if they are not in line with someone else’s reality. Besides, I think she meant it as an encouragement not realizing someone else may not take it that way.

  • The only people who I can imagine feeling offended by this comment are the very people she’s talking about. Most of the US is fat. Just admit it. I know it’s the popular thing to have a “glandular problem”, but frankly, most people don’t have these issues. Portion sizes, crappy food and not enough exercise (and the assumption that all our problems can be solved with a pill) is literally killing this country. Americans spend the least amount of time preparing our food for ourselves and it shows. Perhaps is we went for what was healthy instead of what was easy, we wouldn’t have people getting their panties ruffled when someone like Mila says what we already know to be true.

  • I think Mila is completely right, anyone can do it, i am a female software developer who finds it almost impossible to leave the computer desk on a daily basis and i make the effort to keep my body in great shape, She is simply saying “its possible” with hard work and sacrifice. i am with you on this one Mila

  • you just sound jealous..she works hard to get where she is and she can say anything she wants to say she deserves to.

  • Really mila?? Really?? Why don;t you just insult any girl who is struggling with her weight, trying to get more excercise and trying to eat better, but we all know nobody is perfect and some times you just can’t be as active as you want, and then it should be ok to forgive yourself and say “ok today isn’t my day, god knows i try my best!!”. She is implying that failing isn’t an option and you should be perfect. Please mila, you’ve never struggled with your weight one day in your life! You don’t know what it’s like and until you do, you should keep your trapper shut, you can’t judge some other person like that if you never experienced it.

  • Who cares about the weight loss comments? You’re blowing it out of proportion. I wanna hear from all of you who think she is not being completely honest about herself and JT? If you have seen any of the interviews these two have done, (especially unscripted Moviefone) you’d say, “If they ain’t, they should be, and if she won’t J.T., I will!” I saw FWB today, and they are hot together. You see, I have trouble believing two, hot, attractive, single, young, talented, funny and incredibly attracted to each other people, are not having a relationship. I do not buy their “just friends” and “there is no truth to the rumors”. Uhuh, no, uhuh.
Now, if they are denying it for the sake of their x’s feelings, I can see that, but there is definitely something going on.
