Quotables: President George Bush Speaks Out About Alcoholism

photo of president george w bush with the easter bunny pictures

“So I’m drunk at the dinner table at Mother and Dad’s house in Maine. And my brothers and sister are there, Laura’s there. And I’m sitting next to a beautiful woman, friend of Mother and Dad’s,” says Bush. “And I said to her out loud, ‘What is sex like after 50?’ … I hope somebody reads this book and says, ‘If Bush can quit, I can quit.'”

Former President George W. Bush on tackling the big issues … alcoholism. You know, not to intermingle politics with celebrity, but I like Bush. I like him a lot. Though I voted for him – twice – there were some decisions that were made during his presidency that I didn’t care for, but on the whole? I think he’s an alright dude. And I think that he’s got a lot of wit and charm buried in there that a lot of people don’t see because they either think he’s some backward, blithering idiot, or because his Presidency overshadows everything that he’s done since. Or before. Or at all.

  • I 100% agree! He totally is an alright guy who, i believe, takes a hell of a lot of flack. No, he was not a perfect president, but people make him out to be this terrible demon and I think it is quite unfair. He seems like a down ass dude who’d prob be a lot of fun getting wasted with!!

  • every president is demonized from opposing parties. president doesn’t make the laws, the congress does…so maybe people should vote for the mid-term elections and not just the big one…just sayin’…..

i think hes dumb but i agree, he isn’t satan.

  • being a good president and being a good guy are two entirely, unrelated things. bush may have some charm and wit, but as a president, he was indeed a blithering idiot.

  • “there were some decisions that were made during his presidency that I didn’t care for”

    lol@THAT BULLSHIT

  • I really must re-consider reading this blog if you think he’s alright. His decisions were crap and even his recent statement that Kanye’s comment was the low point of his presidency, indicates that he still lacks a grasp on the reality of his circumstances.

  • Jesus Christ Sarah, he IS a backwards, blithering idiot. Come play with me on a political forum, we’ll have LOTS of fun there, I promise!

  • Mate, you like Bush? You thought he was an alright president? He who invaded Afghanistan and Iraq for nothing? What’s next? Bloody hell.

  • It is so easy to hate Bush, just cause “everyone else” does. And just remember Bush isn’t the only one who has interfered with another foreign country business and fucked some things up. Clinton Debacle in Bosnia for instance. Read a book morons.

      • I think you Miss Kate and Sarah , are about as smart as Bush is. Maybe you should go hang out with him. Who even mentioned Clinton? Nobody is even talking about him here! Actually no part of your comment made any sense. And ending it with “read a book morons” just adds to the confusion. Looks like You should try reading Something, might I suggest baby steps as a book might be too much to swallow at this point. Bush IS dumb as hell, even his own family was confused that he was the one out of them to get elected president. Oh and Sarah, you are a gnarly human being to be able to admit to voting for that bastard. Ignorance like yours is why people die in this world.

    • you’re right about one thing: it’s easy to hate bush. not just because he attacked the wrong country over non-existent WMD’s… although that is evidence of his general hysteria during his presidency. his level of panic… of guilt about not paying attention to the warnings about the upcoming attacks, of guilt over not really knowing anything about the middle east… caused him to run around hysterically making terrible decision after terrible decision. as fir bosnia: do you mean the war we won with international help in which very few american soldiers were harmed? in which the perpetrators were tried and punished for war crimes?
      a bosnian mother stated:
“Besides halting the war, the arrival of U.S. troops has revived the moribund local economy. Hundreds of Bosnians have been hired at the base as interpreters, drivers, janitors and construction workers. Local bakeries and other food suppliers are starting to receive contracts to supply the troops.”
i believe you are reading books. i’m not sure they’re factual. the only thing, in my mind, that bush got right was to not lump all muslims into the terrorists… and his commitment to aids abroad, (even if it was ridiculously based on abstinence). also, i supported his plan to deal with illegal aliens. other than that, the eight years he was president made me angry and afraid every day. the good news is, republican presidents tend to focus on their golf games and their museums and getting stuff named after them after they retire as opposed to, say, helping the poor. hell, helping anyone. so, you don’t generally have to hear from them anymore.

      • I am not saying that I agreed with every single fucking thing Bush did, all I am saying is that, in terms of making mistakes and bad decisions is not exclusive to Bush. As for the Bosnian war, Clinton decided to have NATO bomb Yugoslavia, hundreds of thousands of refugees and civilians were killed in the process. Again, all I am saying is that it isn’t the best idea to demonize someone, if you don’t know what the full story, and jump on a bandwagon without doing your own research about BOTH parties and the good and bad things they have done. And don’t forget that Bush has helped since he has been out of office, and in fact! he has paired up with Clinton to do the Clinton Bush Haiti fund. You only see what you want to see.

  • Damn girl. I’m with khia213. I’m considering no longer reading this blog now. I mean seriously girl, damn. What are you thinking? Or not thinking?

    • so you’re obviously a horrible, wretched person that no one’s supposed to like on principle if you’ve made mistakes (even really big ones)? i guess everyone’s pretty much fucked then, unless of course, they’ve never made mistakes, like you obviously never have.

  • Note that none of the blithering idiots, to quote them at them, who blab on this blog have been in public service. Your comments are pretty much on the mark. And none of the ding dongs who voted for Osama obama have done this country any favors whatsoever.

  • My history with George Bush; Voted for him round 1. Voted for Kerry (barfed while doing so) round 2.
Was in Chicago when planes hit the twin towers. Wondered why we waited the day to invade someone. Felt comforted when Bush addressed the police and fire rescue people who were looking for survivors. Was electrified when The Who played Boba O’Riley at concert in NY. Sobbed uncontrollably over the level of death and destruction wrought in America’s great City, New York, NY. Wondered if friends were ok. Was in Hawaii when we invaded Iraq – saw photos of kid whose arms and legs were blown off being comforted by an aunt of his – both parents and all siblings killed during the invasion. Realized that if we found no weapons under sand we were oh-so-screwed; looked at photos of kid and cried – wondered if invasion was worth the horrible carnage. Was driving from Panama City to home in So. FL when Saddam Hussein was captured. Listened to news, riveted, the entire way home. Worked in Conduit Facility during 2003 to late 2007 reviewing mortgage loans (am mtg. contractor). Realized in 2006 (everyone did including the top brass) that financial Armageddon was fast approaching. July 2007; heard top brass, huddled in halls, whispering that they were bailing out of stock market because a market crash was imminent. Called husband, had him liquidate all stocks – week later, market crashed – 1st of a series of seemingly endless crashes. Ass barely saved. 2008 all Hell broke loose. 2008 – Bush kicked to curb while economy melted like a cheap candle. Bush and then Obama pumped trillions into the financial system in an effort to keep its mangled heart beating (and it’s not over yet, babies, not by a long shot). Bush’s presidency was changed forever by the events of 911, as was he, and all of us. In the end, Bush followed his convictions and did what he felt was right despite the wrath of public opinion. That takes courage and internal viscera. How many out there have that kind of courage? If I am honest with myself; I don’t. Obama is following his path. He is following his convictions and is doing what he feels is right despite storm and wrath of public opinion. He is also a man of courage and internal viscera. God bless all those who seek to govern the totally thankless rabble we call “Americans” and our Nation. I extend my thanks to all who serve this wrenched, miserable, ungrateful country. Both men deserve the respect that is their due, whether we agree with them or not. I respect you for stating your admiration of Bush. That took courage and internal viscera. You are ok in my book.

  • You woke up 21 people to write here. Haven’t seen that in a while. Too bad it takes talking about Dubya to do that. Maybe next it could be a post that is anti-puppy and kitten. That might work, too.

I still cannot get past Kanye’s comment being Dubya’s low point (per him). 3000 Americans vaporized on 9-11 and being insulted by a “jackass” (per Obama later) was what sticks in his craw. When Matt Laurer began to discuss what others think Dubya said “don’t care.” Yeah what a gem of a human being.

  • That does explain a lot.

Coming from a country he and his people tried to bully into joining the war in Iraq when it was obvious even then that the evidence given was fake- I cannot really feel any sympathy for this man.
I do not feel like I have any right to judge his domestic politicies. That is America’s thing to do. His international work though I can and will judge. I cannot imagine to be in charge of a country that was attacked in such a cruel and surprising way. Bush and his staff must have been devastated. I get that. I get that people do irrational things when in shock and anger. The (illegal by any international law) war in Iraq and the American way of not taking anything other countries brought into the discussion into consideration however are not things the world can let go.
Bush showed the ugliest side of America we can imagine: too proud, too religious, too conceited and sadly not smart enough to back that up.

    • “Bush showed the ugliest side of America we can imagine: too proud, too religious, too conceited and sadly not smart enough to back that up.”
You had me until you made this last statement. It is the epitome of ignorance and conceit to attempt to generalize an entire Nation in such a way, don’t you think? The population of America totals 310,639,723 persons and counting, and many of them have emigrated here from somewhere else seeking opportunity. And unless I have been asleep somewhere, I don’t believe that Americans are engaging in terroristic activities. Soccer moms and insurance agents don’t strap bombs to their chests and walk into a crowd of people in an attempt to bring about religious jihad. That seems to be the prevue of religious radicals who live elsewhere. And before everyone begins to feel all self righteous, superior and all, let’s take a look at what some of the other countries in the world have done to their fellow men just in the past century; Russia, China, Germany, Italy, Spain, North Vietnam, North Korea, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Bosnia, Serbia, England, Uganda, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, etc just to name a few. To try to generalize such a huge and diverse country such as America, or any country for that matter, is just about as ignorant, conceited and actually laughable as it gets. We’re not perfect – but we don’t pretend to be. And neither is anyone else. Everybody has blood on their hands. Everybody.

      • I am sorry. I must have expressed myself wrong. I am German. I know that nations are not one of same.
I love America. I love the idea of freedom it is built on. I truly know and believe that there are a lot of great, smart, moral people in America. And just as many not so great as in any other place in the world.
What I wanted to say is that Bush showed the rest of the world a side of America that was rather ignorant. He made it so easy for many to forget the great things America has done (especially here in Germany we have to be so thankful). During his presidency America was cold shouldered towars all nations not agreeing. I believe hat is why so many outside the US feel like his presidency was such a burden on the world. As I said before I do not feel any right to judge his domestic policies.

  • Wow! not only you voted for him TWICE you also think he is an OK guy?! Sure! What next? Lindsay Lohan for president? He IS the president with the lower IQ in the history of USA

  • cool, guys. let’s all be really disrespectful because we disagree with someone’s political beliefs. that’s way open-minded.

    • that’s the problem with today’s world and practically everyone in it. no one is tolerant of another’s beliefs, and expects everyone to respect their own.

      • yeah, sometimes it’s hard to stand by and look at all you brainwashed people sucking eagle cock in this great country of the free

  • he may be an “alright guy”, but he was shit for president. its always the lesser of two evils. due to his lack of intelligence, he was the greater in those races…

  • I agree that he seems like a nice enough guy, I just wish he decided not to run for president. He was more loyal to his cabinet members than the American people and unfortunately, he was duped by them and their ideas.

  • To everyone informing the author of this blog what she should and shouldn’t write: You’re reading HER blog. Need I say more?

To everyone who wants to talk about how much they hate the former president: be tolerant of others beliefs. You can state opinions, facts and spew personal hatred all day, none of which excuse your asinine expectation that everyone believe what you do. You are the reason our world is so closed-minded.

  • Whatever you want to say about Bush as a president….he loved his country and he believed it was the bastion of freedom it was….unlike OBAMA that was SOCIALIZED the car industries, the mortgage idustries, the student loan industries….shall I go on? and as for the WMD….if you people actually read any international papers, Sadam DID have WMD’s b/c he gased the KURDS in 92….do you think that he used up all those stock piles? no, they were moved to Syria and IRan and there are photographic evidence of such. Bush’s MAJOR fault was not hammering his message to the AMERICAN people that the reason for the WAR IN THE GULF WAS THE PUT THE AMERICAN PRESENCE IN THE SNAKE PIT THAT IS THE SANDPIT FOR TERRORISM….LOOK WHO SURROUNDS IRAQ…HMMMM? SYRIA AND IRAN???!?! USE YOUR BRAINS, YOU FUCKING MORONS. TALABAN, ALQADA….ECT….WWIII W BE ISLAM V. THE WEST. AND WHO DO YOU THINK WILL WIN. THE WEST ARE PANSIES. WE’RE TOO PC. THERE YOU GO….
AND NO. 2—–AT LEAST BUSH LOVED HIS COUNTRY AND WOULD DIE FOR IT….CAN YOU HONESTLY SAY THAT OBAMA WOULD PUT DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS COUNTRY? i’ll leave that question open…..
