I Have This Feeling That American Idol‘s on the Chopping Block

With this being judge Simon Cowell’s last year, I thought the show was going to go to pieces. But then they brought on Ellen, whom I adore and I rationalized that they’d never cancel the show after one season of Ellen judging. She’s as big as Santa Claus … or at least Oprah, at any rate. She’d only sign on if this were something “serious,” right?

Well, sources have definitely confirmed that bandleader “Rickey Minor” will be leaving American Idol after the end of this season to pursue a career on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.

The 2010 season of American Idol is said to close on or around the end of May and representatives for Minor state that he’ll start his new gig with Leno on June 7th of this year.

I have a feeling … that FOX network is trying to sneak-attack everyone with these abrupt show cancellations. First 24 (my favorite show, like, in all of the world’s history of television) and now it looks like American Idol.

This was gonna be my year, man. I’d frittered and wasted so many years leading up to the 2010 season of American Idol and dammit, I promised myself that tryouts for the 2011 season were mine. The National Enquirer claims to have info stating that Idol won’t end until 2012 — and that’ll be a good thing. For me.

If FOX cancels this show before I get my audition … dude, there’s going to be hell to pay.

  • I know I’m in the minority, but AI never did much for me. It was kind of a cool novelty the first year (maybe two), but after that it just seemed contrived, for lack of a better way of putting it.

Put Sarah on quick before it’s gone :-)

  • Loved this show until this year. Ellen has not been a good addition/replacement for Paula. She’s not funny in that venue, and quite frankly doesn’t add much to the judging panel. AI has run it’s course, I’m afraid. It won’t be Idol without Simon Cowell at the helm. He is the only honest judge on there, IMO.

  • And furthermore, they’ve really screwed up the program the past few seasons with the “star” mentoring (Miley Cyrus???) and guest judges during auditions. I liked the old format before Elvis Pressley night became mandatory every year. Ugh. Let them sing whatever they want every week – that would be the true test of their talent.

  • What are you talking about? Rickey Minor and Kevin Eubanks ARE NOT THE SAME PERSON!

Furthermore, Kevin Eubanks IS the bandleader for Jay Leno.

    So I don’t get this.

    • This post is truly confusing and there’s something manic about it.
Kevin Eubanks is the current bandleader for Jay Leno’s “The Tonight Show” and Rickey Minor is the current bandleader for “American Idol.”
Kevin Eubanks will soon be leaving Jay Leno’s “The Tonight Show,” after something like 18 years of working on Jay Leno’s show(s). Rickey Minor has just agreed to leave “American Idol” in order to replace Kevin Eubanks as the bandleader of Jay Leno’s “The Tonight Show.”
Rickey Minor has been an important part of AI, but he has mostly remained behind the scenes. AI could be just fine without him. I’m sure they can hire a very capable replacement. Now, Simon Cowell’s impending departure, that has opened a real can of worms.

    • Sorry about the confusion. I guess that’s what happens when you’re reading two different articles and trying to convey your thoughts on a completely different platform. LOL I corrected the article and thanks for pointing it out … It’d be a real bitch to have people think that Rickey Minor’s got a crazy alter-ego floating around somewhere.

      • How is your meth addiction working out for you Sarah?
You’re a moronic tool. Where can I get payed to be a fucking moron? Other than Evil Beet or the U.S. government?

  • THIS MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE ! WTF?

  • AI has gotten pretty bad over last few years, I really don’t like the “Celebrity Mentors” or whatever they’re called, and the whole “saving” one person, then two get voted off the next week seems a little unfair to me. I always thought AI was about who AMERICA voted for, but it seems like they’ve made it more who THEY want to win.
But I live in Canada, and they cancelled Canadian Idol years ago, way before I got my chance to audition. :(

  • FOX ALWAYS cancels the best shows… “Freaks and Geeks” and “Firefly”! Although, I’ve always hated Idol… it’s a successful show, so why wouldn’t they cancel it?

    • Freaks and Geeks originally aired on NBC, not Fox. And Firefly was ratings-deprived, by major TV network standards; Freaks and Geeks was also ratings-deprived, unfortunately, despite its awesomeness.

    • Too true! I love Firefly still. And really, Dr. Horrible should have evolved into an actual show.

  • Kevin Eubanks is leaving the tonight show!!!! Not leaving american idol to pursue his carrer with jay!!! FACT CHECK!

    • Ha, you fuckin wish. what, did you miss the cattle call when sasha was hiring? pissy because you couldn’t hack it?
