Today's Evil Beet Gossip

Really Good Job, Kristen

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning were promoting The Runaways all week at Sundance and if this press conference is any indication of how Kristen handled herself throughout the week, then I’m sure the publicists at River Road Entertainment want to kill her. Where this video picks up, we see Dakota describing what it was like to sing The Runaways’ songs and do them justice. Then Kristen takes the mic and… well, she sounds like an awkward moron. I can barely hear anything she says, except the word “whatever”, which she uses about one hundred times. The poor girl knows she can’t hack it either, and looks embarrassed and apologetic as Dakota confidently steps back to the mic, giggling at her co-star’s inability to deliver.
I actually don’t dislike Kristen Stewart at all. I think she’s a bit boring and she’s wayyyy out of her league when speaking next to a seasoned pro like Dakota, but in her words, “whatever”.

  • wow. uncomfortable. i almost feel bad for her because it seems like a stage fright general-awkwardness thing that she can’t help. i feel like people will say drugs are involved or someting, but to me she just seems super nervous and socially awkward. and dirty. girl needs a shower.

  • The fact that she comes off as socially awkward actually makes me like her more. I’ve read a couple of magazine interviews where she did just fine. Maybe she should stick to print.

    • “Maybe she should stick to print.” OH GOD YES, and never act again! That is a great fucking idea.

  • She just looks really nervous. I feel for her! She does not seem like a grandstander in any situation, which I think gets misinterpreted a lot. The nice thing about movie acting is it’s very intimate…she would never be a stage actress, from the looks of things.

  • yea, i feel bad for her too, she clearly wasn’t comfortable. also, they both said, “um” and “uh” about a million times!

  • her awkwardness reminds me of me when I was young! I do like her – I think she tries hard but she feels too awkward.

  • I don’t think Kristin comes off as boring or arrogantly defiant… I think she’s genuinely nervous. You can hear the poor girl hyperventilating! This actually makes me feel for her a little bit (except, ya know – for the part where she makes gazillions of dollars to be an actress). There was a time where actresses were just that. The culture of ‘Celebrity’ has been redefined many times, as has the expectations from the public of celebrities. Girl shows up to work on time, prob not trashed, and makes the studio money, say, unlike Mischa. Whatever!

I think Kristin was actually telling the truth when she said something about being an actress, not a celebrity. I sort of respect her for that. So, whatever!

  • she seems really shy and nervous. i don’t know why people get so mad at her for wanting to be a more private person. she doesn’t like being a celebrity. big freakin deal!
maybe she just wants to be an actor.

and then we have idiots like tila tequila that have no talent but LOVE the spotlight and attention so much it makes me want to vomit.
i find stewart to refreshing for not being such a fame whore…even if that makes some people think she is boring.

  • Wow like most other people I thought she was just a sullen teenager too cool to deal with the world but from this video it seems like she’s just a poor nervous girl. My god she’s nervous! I was biting my nails for her!

  • After reading so much about this girl and her public interviews I figured I’d actually watch the video.

It really does seem that Kristen has a real fear of public speaking. You’d think that with her millions she would take a few public speaking classes so she doesn’t appear so much of a moron.

  • kristen seriously needs to wash her hair. and okay, i can deal with her having a fear of public speaking, but biting her jacket was totally unnecessary and gross.

  • well…that was uncomfortable. but..you know what..she’s an actress. even if she is uncomfortable and has stage fright…let’s not kid ourselves…she can pull it together better than that performance. if this were her first appearance and she wasn’t famous and she had to do well to get a break, i bet she would miraculously get her act together.

i think she has decided to use her nervousness to work for her and to try to come off awkward and relatable and real instead if trying to come off as a seasoned professional. and i think dakota is picking up on kristen’s vibe.

    • “she can pull it together better than that performance.”

That was no fucking performance. That’s how she always is. Just because someone has the title of ‘actor’ doesn’t mean that he/she is generally going to be an outgoing and social person. She’s an actor, not a damn public speaker.

Acting is a job, though most turn it into a lifestyle. Apparently she hasn’t done so. She seems to be someone who appreciates the craft (whether you think she’s good at it or not) and just doesn’t give a fuck about making amazing impressions.

  • Molls, you don’t have to hate her, you know? It’s really obvious that she’s very nervous and tense. Give her a few more years (with speaking engagements like this) and she’ll just may improve.

    • That explains it—I was about to be sick from her nerves, myself.

Still, she’s going to need a lot more talent on her side if she is going to continue promoting her films so badly :(

  • I clicked on another video of them and it seems like it was on the same day, in front of a lot less people and she did much better! Not outstanding.. but certainly not as bad as this one. She’s just really shy and sucks at keeping it under control. Give the girl a break…

  • I have a feeling that this girl will crack under the pressure of being a movie star/celebrity. I don’t know her background but she doesn’t seem to be grounded in reality. She will need “substances” to make her comfortable in front of crowds and cameras. The next Keith Ledger?

      • I think he worked Craft Services on Brokeback Mountain, the movie that his late cousin Heath received critical acclaim and awards for.
That’s a really asinine jump to conclusions, Ethel. Kristen Stewart has no interest in working for Craft Services.

  • everyone seems to be forgetting that kristen stewart has been in movies since 2000, particularly her large role in panic room in 2002. i think ten years is sufficient time to learn how to speak correctly during a press conference.

    • Sadly, this is her working. She is paid to promote the film, not only to act in it.
I can’t imagine the studio is too happy with this sloppy mess of a promotion.

  • Okay folks, I’m sick and tired if everyone being all ‘she’s just nervous’ crap. Get a Coach of some sort, or a publicist or her manager of whoever to sit with this girl, and go over some calming breathing techniques, and how to get thoughts together before you ramble like a 3 year old who’s just gotten a hang of the English language! This acting like an awkward teenager is grating on my nerves, she’s an ADULT, start acting like one!

For God’s sake enough with the twitchy shirt biting, fingers in mouth bullcrap. Grow a pair KStew, and stand up straight, think before you speak and maybe you can make an articulate sentance! Christ!!

  • I watched it again. She’s just trying to be all “Rock and Roll” hip and shit. It doesn’t work.

  • well my computer went funny for a moment so sorry if this posts twice. I think you meant Heath Ledger. You don’t know Kristen’s back ground, yet you say she is not grounded in reality. You do not know if she is the kind of person to use substances to keep herself comfortable. The girl is nervous. Did you see the crowd? And phobias do not go away just because someone is wealthy, famous, talented,…whatever. There are a lot of high profile and famous movie stars and musicians with the same problem, but they take the edge off with drugs and alcohol. Kristen, even after 10 years in the business, chooses to not take drugs to calm herself to handle a crowd (just in private with pot..lol). Granted, her speech was a train wreck. That doesn’t mean that she is as well. For example, Kim Basinger is well known for her cripling fear of public speaking. No amount of experience, success, beauty, and money has changed that for her.

  • I would love to see Kristen, Pink, Fergie, Avril, Courtney and Christina get into a who’s the hottest ‘ punk rock chick’ argument, with Joan Jett monitering their claims ‘valid or invalid’ for accuracy. you know Love is gonna sneer; “Something that does not sparkle.
Dracula is a vampire, but Edward Cullen is a fairy.”

  • I hate it when? girls go up on the end of their sentences? like, all the time? so everything sounds, um, like a question? it uh, ah, makes them seem like they’re, uh, not intelligent?

  • so why is kristen soooo nervous for this press conference, yet she is audible and saying complete sentences during her twilight press conferences? i don’t feel bad for her at all, and there are no excuses for her being so unprofessional here.

    • Probably because she actually cares about this movie and actually gives a shit about promoting it. So she gets nervous.

  • Some people get into acting because they don’t know who to be or what to say as themselves. Henry Fonda was honest about that, although that trait of extreme shyness also made him a terrible father and probably a difficult husband.
Maybe Kristen has a similar problem – she may never grow out of it. She always looks very awkward at Twilight openings. But Dakota could speak fluently when being interviewed when she was about 7 or 8 years old, so maybe she was “um-ing” in sympathy for Kristen.

  • You are so right. Dakota started her acting career very early on. Her confident and naturally professional manner was evident early on. She also had a lot of sound guidance. Children can in fact grow up without the typical hang ups if their parents teach them early on how to deal with things without fear. My neice at the age of 3 was saying please, thank you, please excuse me and all those social graces you would expect from a much older kid. But my sister taught her from day one. At age 4 she has the confidence, demeanor, vocabulary, and emotional maturity of someone twice her age. She has already learned (basic) proper english, spanish, and sign language. No one pushed her. She was simply exposed to it as if it was no big deal. Ok, sorry to gush about my neice. But Kristen did not come from the same upbringing and started acting much later. Dakota has been groomed for this level and is the exception. Perhaps their friendship will help Kristen find her center. She’s barely out of her teens right? I think we should go easy on the girl. I don’t know why people hold such high standards for others and put them down when they can’t meet that expectation. That really helps, ya. I hate to imply everyone who slams her is jealous in some way, but the truth is we all do that. I can’t stand Lady Gaga. Why? because she’s a confident, individual, who does her own thing without apology. How dare she. Since I know this, I simply don’t post comments about her, because truly she’s done nothing wrong. Sorry to be such a drag. I’ll try to be more snarky next time :o
