Brad and Angelina Give 1 Million Dollars to Haiti

As you’ve probably heard by now, there was a 7.0 earthquake in Haiti earlier this week and Hollywood is coming out to show their support. It was announced today that the Hollywood Foreign Press has donated 100,000 dollars to the relief fund, and yesterday it was announced that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie cut a check for one million dollars to go toward the cause.

Statements from Angelina and Brad were published on People.com:

Angelina: “It is incredibly horrible to see a catastrophe of this size hit a people who have been suffering from extreme poverty, violence and unrest for so many decades.”

Brad: “We understand the first response is critical to serve the immediate needs of countless people who are now displaced from their homes, are suffering trauma, and most require urgent care.”

While it’s hard (OK, impossible) to donate on that level, there are ways that everyone can help. Right now if you text ‘HAITI’ to 90999, you can donate 10 dollars to the American Red Cross. The donation will be added to your cellphone bill (meaning you don’t have to worry about paying for it until your bill comes) and the service was set up by the U.S. State Department, so you know that it’s legit. Also, if you text “YELE” to 501501, you can donate $5 to Haiti native Wyclef Jean’s fund. You can check out Yele’s website here. Finally, American Airlines is offering free flights to Haiti for doctors and nurses who will be able to provide aid. If this is something that applies to you, you can call 212-697-9767 and sign up.

We talk about some pretty fun stuff over here, but it’s always important to keep in mind that there’s bigger news going on in the world than last night’s American Idol auditions.

  • Just remember when you give those dollars to Haiti, how they dragged our US Servicemen through the streets and burned their bodies. Oh yeah, I’ll be giving them a big fat zero. The only ones I feel badly for are the Haitian children — they don’t deserve this. The Haitian government — welcome to hell — what you sow, you shall reap. (Sorry to go all Pat Robertson on ya.)

I don’t think the US should go nutz giving them anything. They are not a viable strategic interest and have no real economic contribution to benefit the US.

    • YOU ARE PATHETIC. ugh. just because you heard of something far away which is probably exaggerated and falsified, you are going to withhold help to a FELLOW HUMAN BEING. go to hell and die

  • So what you’re saying Crabtown is that because of the actions of some Haitians, they all deserve to suffer, (except the children of course). And because they don’t do anything for the U.S., fuck ’em. Your comment speaks volumes about you. Karma’s a bitch.

  • I can’t believe anyone would say something like Crabtown did. You can’t wish suffering upon millions of people because of the actions of a few.

Also, Molls, this post in particular, your writing has really gotten better in my opinion. I was one of those who wasn’t a fan originally, but I’m glad now I gave it time.

  • yo, CrabtownUsa- got crabs? feeling a bit crabby? fed up with crab cakes? just hating for the heck of hating? whatever your talking about looks like your a little flag waver with something stuck deep inside your undies thats giving you a big fat case of real american home spun glorified star spangled diaper rash. “Lets not give anything to anyone who cant give us something in return” ho ho ho, very mature, I guess the story of scrooge never went through to you as a kid. Good luck surfing the wave of life with that attitude.

  • The American Airlines free flights is a HOAX as reported yesterday by CNN. Please check your facts.
    Also, bring back Wendy!

  • The American Airlines thing is just a rumor … not true.

I think CNN has gone a bit to far … they are interviewing people who are trapped in rubble … litterally shovinng the mike through holes in the cemenet.

Another guy was getting closeups of an 11 year old while they discussed is they would have to amputate her leg to get her out

But kudos to the men of Hati – all but one of the rescues (the UN building) were locals digging with their hands and makeshift shovles – no emergency workers in site … doesn’t Hati have police, fire or military … I haven’t seen one

  • The Haitian people are the government you idiots. Who do you think keeps “them” in power. Go ahead — give them all you want — I won’t. These people will still hate us. Listen to them now on the news…”Where’s our help?” Well, where is “your” corrupt government? It’s time some of these countries start saving themselves. Obama has done a good enough job of putting us on the Third World status and keeping us there. Yeah yeah yeah–I know Bush started the trend — and Obama was going to save us. Well no one is saving us — so how in the fuck can we save anyone else?
I know it’s devastating and that’s a shame. Where is the 100 million coming from you dinks? WE DON’T FUCKING HAVE IT!!!! THE CHINESE OWN US!!!! We still have fucking New Orleans we haven’t rebuilt!!!! Damned California is a straw away from bankruptcy. Don’t you get it yet?

  • That will buy a whole lot of machetes.. because that is what the Haiti people are using now to overpower the weak, rob and plunder each other right now.. sooooo where did all the years of millions in emergency survival goods and health services go while they were poor and un-earthquake devastated? The permanently housed and unharmed red cross is there and they were completely out of food and meds within twenty four hours., but are no where near to aid at the site of destruction?

    • Don’t be so judgemental. You might rob and plunder too if you had no reason to believe that your family would be looked after or lived in such a state of extreme poverty that you saw it as an opportunity. I can’t imagine what it’s like to live somewhere like that day to day, nevermind during a catastrophe of this magnitude. All I’m saying is you might behave differently if you had to live like that.
