Joan Rivers Doesn’t Think Chelsea Handler is Funny

I know we have a big Chelsea following here on Evil Beet, but Joan Rivers admitted in an interview with The Associated Press that she doesn’t think Chelsea Handler is funny.  Of course, Joan also claimed that she hasn’t had much plastic surgery and that some people get too much.  Not her, but “some people”:

AP: One of your recent books “Men Are Stupid and Like Big Boobs” is a guide to plastic surgery. Why write that?

Rivers: I did a lot of research for it. I haven’t had as much as everyone thinks. You have to know how much to do and when to do it. I recommend doing a little bit at a time, otherwise you look like you’ve been through a wind tunnel. Robert Redford looks like he’s in the Witness Protection Program. He could actually kill a man and get away with it now. (Laughs)

AP: Ed McMahon recently passed away. You knew him from your days filling in as host of “The Tonight Show.” What was he like?

Rivers: Ed McMahon was the sweetest, nicest guy. What you saw is what you got. He was very kind to me. When I left “The Tonight Show” to go over to Fox, Johnny Carson put out a mandate that nobody was allowed to talk to me. Ed McMahon, whenever he saw me, would come over and make it his business to say hello. That was very sweet.

AP: Late night is still a man’s world.

Rivers: There’s one girl, Chelsea Handler, but she’s not funny. I think there are too many late-night shows.

AP: Do you miss hosting the red carpets with your daughter, Melissa?

Rivers: Not at all. It changed. Melissa and I were the first to do it. We turned going into a building into an event. Now, God forbid you say Nicole Kidman doesn’t look gorgeous. Her publicist then won’t let you have Tom Hanks. Plus, they’re all dressed. Nobody looks like a fool anymore. Nowadays you even recognize the jewelry because it’s all borrowed.

AP: What do you think of celebrities today?

Rivers: They’re handled badly. … In the old days, when a celebrity went out they were dressed. I don’t want to see Cameron Diaz in sneakers and no makeup. There’s no glamour.

Clearly, Joan Rivers suffers from some type of body dysmorphic disorder.  She isn’t even aware of the irony that exists as she insults Robert Redford for being so over-tooled.  Isn’t it time for her to shut the fuck up and go design another craptastic piece of jewelry for QVC or something?

  • Did she really trash Robert Redford’s plastic surgery and then say that Chelsea wasn’t funny?
Or maybe she was saying all of that ironically to be funny? In that case, she’s flippin’ hilarious!

  • nooo robert redford!! he’s ssoooo dreamy…even old! haha.

chelsea not funny?!? WHAT! i worship the ground of people she stomps on!

  • love joan. for the most part (minus the plastic-surgery covered face!). and she trail-blazed for the likes of chelsea and kathy griffin (and at least kathy recognizes).
i think chelsea’s guests are almost always funnier than her. and her stupid jokes are scripted. she is just doing what other female comics do better. bleh.

    • I agree. I think comedians think if they curse or are dirty or mean that makes them funny. If she wants to go that way she needs to watch Chappelle or Tosh or something.

    • Chelsea’s OK, but she just isn’t that great. She’d NEVER be on TV if she didn’t look the way she does. There, I said it and you all know it’s true.

      • I read My Horizontal Life a few years back–didn’t know who she was. Wasn’t impressed at all. The book felt so fake. Then I found out who she was and still wasn’t impressed. I just don’t think she’s funny. And there is no way she’s 34 or however young/old she claims to be.

      • Oh, it was totally fake. That was part of the humor for me. If that shit had been real it would’ve made me sad for her.

      • “if she didn’t look the way she does”??? You mean ten years older than she claims to be? That can get you on TV?

Sorry. I just don’t like her.

  • ever since celebrity apprentice i can’t STAND joan rivers. i do agree that she paved the way for people like chelsea but i find chelsea to be oh. so. funny.

  • I absolutely 1000% agree with her. Chelsea Handler is NOT funny. She’s essentially the female version of Dane Cook. Totally overrated.

  • I think that the only thing funny about Joan Rivers is her looks. Did her personality go under the knife as well?

  • meh – i don’t find joan or chelsea that funny, but kathy griffin is fucking hilarious.

  • Joan used to be funny in a caustic way when she was younger, and it seemed to work well for her, now she just seems like a bitter old hag that needs to keep her yap shut.

    • i love that your name is shooter, because that’s exactly what joans husband had to do to himself to get away from her sorry ass. the poor guy offed himself. too bad he didn’t shoot her first. and melissa.

  • I can’t stand Chelsea either. Completely over rated.

Tho I tend to like the people who sit around the same desk, at the start of the show, who are funny.

Love Kathy Griffin. Loved Joan in the 80’s. But Joan has not aged well with her comedy.

And bless little Joan’s heart… when she claims she has not had much work done to her face.

I don’t know who screwed with their face more… her or Michael Jackson.

But if you locate a picture of her from 1985 and compare it to one from 2009. It is painfully obvious, she is delusional. Joan’s nose is about to cave into her face.

But sadly I do have to agree with her about Robert Redford.

He waited too long to have his lift done… and it really screwed with the way his eye’s look…. and how his face moves in general. Had he had a nice mini-lift done around the age of 50… it probably would have never been noticeable.

    • What is the common denominator of Kathy G, Joan R, and Chelsea H??

Annoying voices, nasaly, whining, smoker…whatever, I have a hard time getting past the voices.

They could all sub for Rachel Ray’s show and EVOO all over without missing a Beet!! ;-)

  • I think it’s really refreshing to hear someone actually say whatever they want and not give a shit, instead of all of the no-brain, talentless, fake-tanned clones that are trotted out these days. The beauty of Joan Rivers is that she has nothing to prove and doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her.

    • Fully agreed. I love her for that very reason. She says what she means, and she is hilarious. And, sorry, but Chelsea Handler just isn’t that funny! Take me back to the days of Gilda Raddner and Lily Tomlin, please, where real women were actually funny and didn’t need all the hoopla of good looks and a bangin’ body.

  • Chelsea Handler is funny, though not as funny as Kathy Griffen.
But funnier by far than Joan Rivers today.

Joan suffers from the “I have said it all” syndrome, she can’t say anything anymore that she has already said dozens of times.

And I hated the B*TCH / C*NT on Celebrity Apprentice, her and her daughter are lying, whiny skeez bags.

She had the nerve to sit there and say she had nothing to do with the designer quitting the task when it was showed right there on TV.

  • I think Joan and her daughter were playing for the camera’s on the Apprentice. It’s publicity at the end of the day and they knew how to play it. People are still talking about it, no?

And I agree with the above poster who yearns for the female comics of yore. I remember when Ellen was coming up (before the sitcom), Paula Poundstone, Gilda Radner, Lily Tomlin, Brett Butler, etc. Those women were awesome.

Chelsea… Not so much. She has her moments of funny. I tend to like her better in scripted skits. She basically just makes faces or follows up on other people’s funny comments. I tend to like her panel better than her.

  • I like Chelsea. I don’t love her. HOWEVER. Joan is suffering from what’s known as the “In MY Day Syndrome”. She cannot find it within herself to be supportive of other women who work in, basically, the same arena she does. Plain and simple.

Women can be such bitches sometimes and we are our own worst enemies in terms of support.

    Shame on ME…I mean, Joan.

  • I love Chelsea Handler! She’s hilarious. It’s a shame that Joan bashed her, or tried to – it’s really hard for women in comedy and she was one of the first to blaze that trail, but she’s not liked because at her core she’s really nasty and mean. Her husband didn’t kill himself for nothing.

My guess is Joan is afraid of aging, and no matter how ghastly her face looks she’s seeing smooth taut skin, but she looks like that puppet madam from years ago, really she does. It’s sad in a way but in another way very funny – she’s just a goofy looking old woman who will claw your eyes out if you look at her sideways.

  • On Joan R: Never got to see her do standup

On Kathy G: Funny and Witty

On Chelsea H: Not really funny (tries too hard), witty remarks to follow up on interviews. Only has a show because she’s screwing the top dog at E!

  • Can’t remember laughing one time at anything Chelsea had to say.
She looks much older than 35 years. They say she was born 1975,
so it is possible the date is 1957. Look at her arms, they say a lot.
Her show sucks! Not funny at all. No belly-roll laughter. Check
out Kathy Griffin on U-tube doing Nancy Grace. You will be rolling.

  • Is there any way to be funny without being mean or putting other people down or make fun of somebody’s mishaps?

Now there’s a comedian or comedienne I would like to see!
