Ed McMahon died in the very early morning hours today.  This is so sad!

The 86-year-old entertainer passed away at the Ronald Regan UCLA Medical Center.  According to his publicist, he was surrounded by his wife and family.

Ed had struggled with health issues for the past few years, battling cancer, pneumonia and other non-specified illnesses.

McMahon, best known as being Johnny Carson’s sidekick for almost 35 years, also hosted Star Search — really the original American Idol — for over a decade.  Of course, he was also the Publisher’s Clearinghouse dude, too.  Sadly, in more recent years Ed McMahon’s most prominent role was one of debtor — a tragic postscript to a great career that resulted in the foreclosure of his Beverly Hills home.

All I know is this.  With Johnny and Ed both gone, I bet the late-night entertainment in heaven is going to be spectacular.

Prayers and positive thoughts go out to the McMahon family.

  • I don’t think it’s sad when someone over 80 passes away naturally. He had a couple years that were rough, but he lived a good life.

  • Wendie, I understand that the title of these entries must be eye-catching and comical but considering the nature of this particular entry, I believe the title is quite insensitive.

  • Wow I was offended about the Jesus zombie thing but for some reason this title didn’t offend me at all.

He was a good man who brought joy to other people’s lives and lived a long, full life. In my wildest, most far stretched dreams I can only hope there is a heaven and that this man is in it after living 86 years on earth–and probably laughing at the cute title written here about him : ).

  • I was fussy about the Farrah/Ryan marriage thing but this is darling and positive, and if there is a heaven old Ed is looking down on us now from it. This is a nice, uplifting title and post, Wendie. Much props to you.

  • You write very detailed,Pay tribute to you.Couldn’t be written any better. Reading this post reminds me of my old room mate! He always kept talking about this. I will forward this article to him. Pretty sure he will have a good read. Thanks for sharing!
