PETA Ad Banned from Super Bowl

Check out the ad for PETA that NBC wouldn’t allow to air during the Super Bowl.

Here is — no joke — NBC’s verbatim complaints about the video:

* licking pumpkin

* touching her breast with her hand while eating broccoli

* pumpkin from behind between legs

* rubbing pelvic region with pumpkin

* screwing herself with broccoli (fuzzy)

* asparagus on her lap appearing as if it is ready to be inserted into vagina

* licking eggplant

* rubbing asparagus on breast

I agree that it’s really sad that we brutally slaughter animals for food, but the greater tragedy in this world is that we don’t have footage of the NBC boardroom meeting in which this list was created. I just keep playing through mental images of guys in Armani suits and Rolex watches being all like, “Okay, so ‘sucking on eggplant’ goes on the list? Oh, no? No, you want to say ‘licking eggplant’? Oh, okay, hang on, let me change it. Bob, do you think we ought to mention that the broccoli was fuzzy?”

Sheesh.

  • Show me the journal article(s) of the study that show that vegetarians have better sex and I’ll go veg right now.

  • It was that the broccoli was fuzzy it was that the shot of it was fuzzy.

    Im glad they banned it. it was gross.

  • What I find both hilarious and slightly puzzling is how they used the phrase “Screwing” in reference to the, er, “lady” who was, in fact, apparantly “screwing herself with broccoli.” You’d think they would’ve used different verbiage, something a little less crude-colloquial, like “Simulating masturbation with broccoli” or something, I don’t know.

    It’s all profoundly hypocritical anyway. God I hate TV and advertisers.

  • I understand these reasons sound stupid but c’mon these ads are obviously inappropriate. The Super Bowl is a family thing, I know I’d freak if my kid saw an ad like this. The real question is: why does PETA continue to make these ads when they know they are only appropriate for an older audience and will be seen by children? And this criticism is coming from a veg and huge fan of PETA. I love this organization but these commercials are ridiculous. These people are smart, I’m pretty sure they can think of better ways to spread their messages. (not to mention commercials that [gasp] WON’T get banned)

    • they did it because they knew that it wouldn’t be used, so would get a TON of free publicity… just like what we are all doing right now

  • Funny how PETA got *more* advertisement because the damn thing wouldn’t be shown.

    I don’t like them anyway, for the most part they’re crazy and mean. There are much better organizations that people can join to get their word out.

  • I walked away from that commercial not thinking “go vegetarian” but rather “go vagitarian”.

  • i want to know how long it took them to come up with that list and how many times they watched it…
    did they do a second by second analysis?

  • Geeze, I’ve seen so much worse on superbowl beer commercials. I bet they are actually mad that its from peta and about being vegetarian. This seems really unfair to me.

    • I agree! Beer commercials are always crude and sexual. Gimme a break, NBC. If you are going to ban things like this (which I understand since kids watch the super bowl), then get rid of all those other inappropriate commercials too. What hypocrites.

  • I could probably think of more than a dozen female and a few male celebrities who have possibly had sex with all of the previously named veggies.

    • You give them wayyyy too much credit. I don’t suppose you’ve seen their propaganda piece “Mommy Kills Animals?” Yeah, it’s targeted at little children. Yeah, it’s supposed to make them hate their Mommy.

  • THE GREATER TRAGEDY IS THEY WANT TO RENAME FISH KITTENS OF THE SEA.
    IVE BEEN A VEG MOST OF MY ADULT LIFE (15 YEARS)
    AND I THINK PETA HAS GONE FROM BEING ANIMAL ACTIVISTS TO PRESS HUNGRY MEDIA WHORING FANATICS WHO HAVE COMPLETELY LOST SIGHT OF WHAT THEY WERE FIGHT FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE.

  • Not only is it slutty and inappropriate….it’s f’in sexist. I am one of the most liberal people that I know, but come on. That commercial is so not about animal cruelty and so about being disgustingly sexist and attention-craving. And ok, so let’s assume the racy level of the commercial was ok…and veggies DO have better sex……maybe men could be in it to doing lewd things with vegetables. Sex sells is so f*cking over PETA.

  • “PETA GOES JERRY SPRINGER”

    …because you KNOW you’ve seen those Springer episodes where women have food fetishes! Well, sadly, at least I’ve seen them.

  • I think they just realized the PETA ad is in poor taste, spews their usual bullcrap (meat = impotence? then humanity should have died out thousands of years ago), and basically trolls the entire country. PETA would rather millions of people die than one rat come to harm, people.
