Chanel Iman on Cover of Page Six Pictures Photos

“It’s not just black girls. It’s ethnic girls in general: Brazilian girls, Hispanic. You really don’t see a lot of Asians either. A lot of designers think that if every girl on the runway looks exactly alike, then people will come to the shows and buy the clothes because they won’t be focusing on the models….It’s not even just runway either… us ethnic girls should be getting a lot of the covers too! I would love to be on half of the campaigns these [white] girls are booking, all looking exactly alike. It’s not right. It’s not fair.”

Up-and-coming model, Chanel Iman, who scored the cover of Page Six Mag this week, discussing her frustrations with the issues that models of color face in the industry.

I’ll add that Brazilian models, apparently, have to deal with limb amputation in addition to casting discrimination. Now that’s not fair.

    • obviously you’ve never seen a runway show. they DO try to make all the models look like each other like mannequins( which coincidentally is the french for model

also PALE is in now. that’s not a joke its a fact. they try to make the models look pale. even iman has said that is the current trend now that designers have told her themselves when she asked about putting more ethnic girls on the runway.

get with reality. i know that its nice and cosy in your fantasy world.

and no she didnt say that all look alike. at least 30 pounds too heavy and 5 inches too short.

poor white people dealing with the burden of being the dominant race. like i give a fuck.

ethnic people have to deal with real racism all the time and you know what my generation is so over that. i couldnt care less about all the Klan lite members. We know how to stand up for ourselves now. Its a damn new era.

  • Cry me a river honey.
The joke is on the entire fashion industry at the moment.
News Flash! All of the hos that would drop some coin luxury items have pretty much all been laid off around NYC. They have all given up the dream of being A sex and the city shit head and moved back in with mommy and daddy in ohio.

She should go back to school or learn a trade or at least shut the fuck up

  • I love reverse discrimination! We all look alike. LOL. It’s about time someone said that about us whities! It’s true.
You’ve seen one of us, you’ve seen us all.

  • Well, she does have a point. How many ethnic models do runway for Chanel? Miu Miu? Dior? Gucci? A.P.C.? Not that many. Most white models (and I don’t mean to sound racist) look all the same; super skinny, ghostly pale, straight long hair, and dull faces. But then again, crying a river about it won’t change a thing. She should team up with Tyra and other “ethnic” models and start a agency or something. Especially since being black is totally going to be “in” this year.

  • I just watched the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show again (yes I recorded it and CANNOT delete) and there were no shortage of brazillian girls and black girls who KILLED the runway! What is this girl smoking?

  • Ugly bitch can’t hack the competition and wants to whine. Welcome to modeling girl, you’re a perfect fit for that profession.

  • The favorite crutch of the ignorant “its not fair”. When I hear that my ears automatically stop working.

  • ew, bad form to diss the very industry you have based your entire identity upon.

oh, the struggles that models must endure! she ought to be glad shes paying the bills somehow, because i’m sure she can’t type or flip burgers and in this economy you’d better just watch your step.

  • i dont believe her. it seems like every season a new ethnicity is hot. like first it was the brazilians. then the eastern europeans. right now, its the indians. she needs to just chillax

  • ew look at her fingers on her left hand. am i seeing things, or are they just weird? and her lips…oh my.
and liz, i agree. i does look like she needs to have more meat on her bones.

  • Remember to watch the O’Reilly Factor on Fox News each weekday night at 8 pm EST and learn the truth about what is going on in the world, as well as in Iraq and Afghanastan

    • No Fred, O’Reilly sucketh. What we Should be watching is the Rachel Maddow show on msnbc. Now THAT’S a face that’ll get u interested in homosex…uh, I mean politics.

  • Namoi Campbell
    Iman
    Tyra Banks
    Yasmin Le Bon
    Kimora
    Liya Kebede
    Yasmin Warsame
    Yasmeen Ghauri

And then I was going to move on to those from Brazil and figured that I would run out of room.

So ya its clear that I will never like this girl

  • I think she’s talking about high end fashion campaigns and runway designers, not Victoria’s Secret. If you flip through Vogue or Vanity Fair, there are mostly white models, but there are a lot of European models too. They all do look similar, but that’s because the designers want them to be a blank canvas so the clothes stand out. She said it herself and it’s true. I’ve heard a lot of black models say this and it’s not fair to group all white women together. I’m half white and half sicilian and I know I don’t look like all white women I’ve ever seen because we’re all different. She shouldn’t make such blanketed statements. Even though she’s a teenager who probably hasn’t worked a hard day in her life, it doesn’t help the situation to be negative.

  • Modeling actually IS really difficult. It is a hard day’s work. She should at least get credit for that, even if she does make silly statements.

  • not to defend her or anything, but she’s 19. a lot of what comes out of the mouths of 19 year-olds is completely ignorant bullshit said for the sake of having an opinion. while what she said isn’t entirely true and shouldn’t have been said, i’m not surprised to hear it from her; she’s my age, and i have tons of stupid friends who mouth off on things they know very little about. like i said, it doesn’t make it okay, but perhaps as she gets older and establishes some rapport in the industry, she’ll realize that she needs to watch her step instead of spewing thoughtless criticism of her potential employers.

and i think she’s completely ugly. like, really, ridiculously, unavoidably, irreversibly hideous. i google imaged her to see if maybe this was just a bad shot, but she really looks like this.

so perhaps she’s having a hard time finding work because she’s ugly in an industry of beauty, and not because she’s not white.

    • I agree. But the problem is if she makes such stupid comments about the people who in her mind make up the majority of the industry she won’t be able to “establish some rapport” with them if they hate her fucking guts.

  • The thing is, in modeling, it’s not necessarily about being pretty. As far as the fashion industry is concerned, pretty girls are a dime a dozen, they want girls that are interesting to look at. It’s like a painting, it’s not necessarily pretty, but you still stare at it an are intrigued. She definitely has a face for that.
And also, ‘ethnic’ girls tend to get the more ‘sex pot’ campaigns, like Victoria’s Secret or the Swimsuit Issue. When it comes to campaigns, i.e. Chanel, Prada, Lanvin, they don’t really use too many ethnic models. While I don’t agree with her being rash and saying all white models look the same, she does have a point.

    • ” you still stare at it and are intrigued”? Are you joking?

in?trigue= to arouse the curiosity or interest of by unusual, new, or otherwise fascinating or compelling qualities.

The only thing that intrigues me is how this ugly bitch even got in the door at a fashion show and why anyone would ever ask her a question. Who cares what she thinks. She just sewed her fucking fate in the industry. Irregardless of any subjective beauty, if she thinks she is going to change the minds of the fashion elite or change the world by sputtering her juvenile beliefs she is a damn idiot. She is entitled to her beliefs but if she wants to model her strategy was ill advised. Show me any example where some young fool who has nothing (looks or money) can call their bosses a racist and then move ahead in their profession. Not only have they not moved up, more often then not they were squashed. See you in the unemployment line fool!

  • Whine a little more. This is the girl’s chosen profession. Suck it up, or move on. Bitching isn’t going to get you anywhere, especially with those lips.

  • 1) She’s UGLY, she’d put me off the clothes.

    2) Racist cow.

    3) Dark girls are no better than white girls (it works both ways).

    4) Jealous much?

    5) Dating at 18? Fascinating..

    6) Again, she’s ugly xD

    • 1) How is she being racist? She’s not saying white girls shouldn’t get shoots, she just wants girls of other ethnicities should get more equal representation.

2)What exactly is a “dark girl” ? Most asians are paler than a lot of europeans.

      3) She’s 19, a model on magazine covers, and probably has more money than you ever will. Are YOU jealous much?

      4) What is so strange about dating at 18?

  • just because she is a model doesn’t me that she can’t critique her industry. she sees a problem and is voicing it. this world is multicultural, this country is multicultural, yet the world that this industry creates looks pretty monocultural. and why is that? what is considered default and really, who created that ideal? these are ideas and terms that change and evolve, not something set in stone.

so if she is whining, let her whine. and least she is speaking up for something that doesn’t just affect her, but for all women of color, a community of people that she sees as being disenfranchised. that’s really more than I can say for many of you here.

and really, commenting on someone’s appearance as a retort is very fifth grade.

Let’s have that marinate for a few moments.

and really, commenting on someone’s appearance as a retort is very fifth grade.

  • actually, although she could have said this more eloquently perhaps, I have heard this before. And, I have heard a lot of reports how magazines will usually not have covers with a non-white person, because allegedly they do not sell as well. And if you look at the high end fashion houses, what she is saying is true. A lot of times it’s just a mess of tall, emaciated pale white girls… with sad little faces.

seriously…. when is the last time you saw some asian girls walk at one of these shows?

oh… and to not be 100% having her back, is that a real name? eesh.

  • damn, i’m a white, blonde skinny aspiring model. oh and i’m not racist.. but this girl needs to sort out her thoughts.

  • damn, i’m a white, blonde skinny aspiring model. oh and i’m not racist.. but this girl needs to sort out her thoughts.

  • You commenters are kind of gross. She’s actually a very pretty girl, and she’s right, there is a lot of racism in the modeling world, just like in the “real” world. READ what she is saying a couple times, THEN try REALLY HARD to comment like you know about the fashion industry. Btw, shes black and asian.

  • Who the fuck named her Chanel Iman? Her mother? How sad! Herself? Still sad. If she wants to have her own unique identity, naming herself like some downtown drag queen shows lack of education. In her video on NYPost ( http://www.nypost.com/video/?channel=PostEntertainmentFeed&clipid=1458_451237&bitrate=300&format=flash ) she talks about all the places she’s been traveling, doesn’t sound like such a bad life. Shut the fuck up and be happy for the opportunities you’ve been given despite running around with such a tired cliche of a name!

  • im tired of seeing these skinny ass weird looking white girls on magazines too. if their pretty for fashion, then fashion aint pretty lol And Chanel Iman is a pretty high fashion mode,l if you dumb white bitches wanna know, so u cud all suck it.

  • More white hating bullshit…..

So shall we equalize rap music and the NBA too? It’s not fair that blacks dominate the rap music industry and basketball, it’s racist.

  • More white hating bull…..

So shall we equalize rap music and the NBA too? It’s not fair that blacks dominate the rap music industry and basketball, it’s racist.

  • If any one of you knew ANYTHING about the modeling industry for the past 100 years you wouldn’t be saying shit. Look at history, there is always a token black girl every year of a new fashion season. Rarely are there a GROUP of ethnic and black girls that stand out on the runway. I’m obsessed with fashion so I should know. Honestly Chanel Iman is not that pretty. Liya Kebede (an Ethiopian beauty) is wayyy prettier.

And all this shit about how she said all whites looked the same, that’s not what she said. She said all the white MODELS look the same, which is also not true. They do all look SIMILAR, but then they are made-up (with make-up) to look homogeneous. And then the fashion designers all go the same route with doing up the white girls to look sickly and pale.

And the inference that for the next four years y’all are gonna have to put up with “white people sucks” is absolutely ridiculous. Sometimes I think the people that read this site are way less intelligent and forward-thinking than you think Beet. I’m disgusted by what some of you say…

  • You white people need to wake up and smell the coffee. You guys cannot really be blind to the fact that racism exist, can you? You know exactly what goes on. Are you guys just hoping that black people won’t notice and that ‘it, ‘we’ will just go away unnoticed? I really want to know.

  • Oh, poor little death expresses her thoughts on discrimination! Fashion brainwashed useless puppet. Ur real name is SHITNEL, not CHANEL.!

  • BTW, Black models: DONYALE LUNA (in the 60’s and 70’s), IMAN BOWIE (70’s and 80’s, even some of 90’s), infamous NAOMI CAMPBELL, KATOUCHA, SELITA EBANKS, NOEMIE LENOIR, ALEK WEK, TYRA BANKS, BEVERLY PELLE, GRACE JONES…

    • so now we know that XXX can use google.

Congrats XXX. I have some fun google activities for you.

google white models (not the thousands there are, just the hundreds of famous ones). then google the covers of VOGUE, ELLE, HARPER’S BAZAAR for the last year and see how many non-white models have landed covers.

this isnt a google activity, but as a fun bonus visit style.com and look through all the runway pictures of the fashion houses and come back and post your research findings.

  • Dear Dark whatever u are, I dont need google or internet to post. I simply remembered those names. U know, there are ppl who still use their heads not wikipedia, google or such. U and others like u can keep kissing this skinny bitch’s ass til ull get enuff of it. White race is the most diverse anyway if needed to say that. She simply wanted more attention and said this stupid remark. Shes not the 1st one to have complained about that. NAOMI CAMPBELL whined in the 90’s same way. So give us a break.

  • White people are the most Diverse? LOL Huh? XXX can you remember all the white models names? Its always easy to remember something when there are less to remember , Your an Idiot

  • Charlie,

    in correct grammar:

“XXX can you remember all the white models names?” would be:
XXX, can you remember all the white models’ names?

“Its always easy to remember something when there are less to remember , Your an Idiot” would be:

Its always easier to remember something when there is less to remember , you’re an idiot.

Ironically, you did manage to spell idiot correctly.

  • Charlie,

After proofing my own post, I found two more:

“Its always easy to remember something when there are less to remember , Your an Idiot” would be:

It’s always easier to remember something when there is less to remember; you’re an idiot.

    You are a real challenge!

  • XXX, I already posted that there are always TOKEN black girls in the industry, but they don’t usually land covers, even if they are successful on the runway or in print campaigns. Rarely, if ever are there a GROUP of black models that land more covers, campaigns, make-up contracts (which are the most lucrative) at the same time and for a long period of time. if you added up all the campaigns all the black models over the past 30 years have done, they still would be less than all of only Kate Moss’s campaigns COMBINED!

    also, you’re a fucking idiot.

    HA!

  • I’ll add that Brazilian models, apparently, have to deal with limb amputation in addition to casting discrimination. Now that’s not fair.

what the fuck is wrong with you? She had an illness that a LOT of Americans have been suffering in the past years, 10th cause of death or something, from what I heard in a documentary. They amputated parts of her body to try to save her.

  • you know your wrong so of course you would hurry and try to find something to make you feel better about yourself and your asinine opinions way to go… Congrads!!

    Typical -W person

  • Ughh, you know your wrong so of course you would try to find something to make you feel better about your asinine opinions way to go… Congrads!!

    Typical -W person

  • WOW! I can’t believe what I’m reading. This just goes to show how subtle indoctrination is. We’ve been so conditioned with regards to acceptable beauty standards, that we don’t recognize it (beauty) when we see it…even when it’s our own reflection. She’s beautiful. The African, Asian, and Caucasian influences are evident in her face – eyes, lips, bone structure – she’s flawless. Although, she didn’t articulate herself well, her point is an ugly truth of the fashion industry and the world we live in. Which is painfully obvious just from reading these comments.

  • Uh… I think I know why most models are white… the mainstream fashion industry was CREATED by whites. Most of the fashion houses were founded by whites, most of the designers are white, most of the styles are based off of white Western modes of dress: after all, they are showcasing suits, high-heels, sunglasses, jeans, t-shirts, lingerie, etc. Not burkas, sheets, loincloths, and turbans. Furthermore, most of the consumers are white. So what do you expect? Of course most of the models will be white in a business that is thoroughly white influenced. If non-whites want to get more modeling jobs than maybe they should start their own multi-billion dollar fashion industry and sell their own cultural products. Why do you constantly want handouts? Why do whites always have to give you a leg-up? Create something yourselves for once. Make your own opportunities, and stop expecting the white person to cater to your every need and desire. You don’t see whites complaining that Bollywood is too Indian do you? No. Bollywood was started by Indians, so naturally it’s mostly Indian. Same goes for the Western fashion industry. If you don’t like it, don’t support it. Like I said, either create something that caters to your demographic, or support one that already does. If you don’t like seeing white models in the essentially white-invented fashion world, than adhere to different standards.
