Mariah Carey Was Your 4th of July ‘Hero’

When I was in 4th grade, I was in after school sign language club (yes, that was a thing) and we’d perform at the winter and spring concerts, doing sign language to a song we’d learned. The first one I ever did was Mariah Carey‘s ‘Hero’, and I sort of remember it all these years later. Because of this, I will always secretly love the song, even if it is kind of droningly boring.

Still, Mariah got her Independence Day celebration vibes on by singing the track for everyone for NBC/Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular last night, doing it only as she could: with a wind machine blowing back her hair and a speech about the triumph of the American spirit given in what can only be described as a sultry coyness. Very bizarre… but gotta love Mariah.

Not sure why she changed the key so much and avoided all the high notes – sounds like she had a cold or something. What the hell? That’s what makes that song worth it! At least we know she wasn’t lip syncing!
