Wait, You Mean Bert and Ernie Are Gay?

This week was a momentous occasion for equal rights in the US, with the Supreme Court ruling DOMA – the awful defense of marriage act was ruled unconstitutional and there’s been a lot of celebrating to do. No one celebrated harder than The New Yorker, who took the time to put America’s favourite gay puppet couple, Bert and Ernie, on its cover.

If you’re one of those people who ask, “Why make Sesame Street sexual?”, you’re kinda missing the point, but okay. I don’t think companionship has to be overtly sexual – it’s not like the cover has them ramming each other up the backside or something. But come on, y’all know Bert and Ernie weren’t just roommates. And now they can get married! That’s a reason to celebrate (ha). Of course, show writers say that the puppets don’t have a sexuality, which is most likely true since… they’re puppets.

The artist of the picture is a man named Jack Hunter, who originally submitted the picture via Tumblr. “It’s amazing to witness how attitudes on gay rights have evolved in my lifetime,” he told The New Yorker‘s Culture Desk. “This is great for our kids, a moment we can all celebrate.”

Yup to all that.

  • i’m with you zombie, why is that great for our kids?

and exactly veronica…they are sleeping in separate beds…why does that make them gay puppets? where did this ideal of those two being gay come abou in the first placet? TONS of people in New York share 1 bedroom apartments with another person of the SAME sex that are NOT gay. what is the POINT of taking a childhood icon and making it a gay thing??? i don’t get it.

p.s. i am NOT against them getting married in any way shape or form. they deserve the right to be miserable like the rest of us! lol i just don’t understand why its even directed at children…they have plenty of time, let them figure it out on there own and for the time being, just let them be kids.

  • I suppose Statler and Waldorf are gay now, too. All they do is sit up in that box together. How suspicious!

    THEY’RE GODDAMN PUPPETS.
