Kevin Costner Talks About Whitney and The Bodyguard 2

In most circles, Kevin Costner is not a celebrity that gets discussed all that often. When everyone I ever meet ever in life finds out about my job and asks me to tell them the latest gossip, they’re never thinking “oooh, how’s that Kevin Costner doing?” because it’s 2012 and he’s just not all that anymore (in case you’re wondering, the things I get asked about the most are “that little redheaded girl from Parent Trap” and American Idol). But that’s a shame, because it seems like Kevin Costner is a really solid dude.

Remember when he gave a eulogy at Whitney Houston‘s funeral? He talked about his time with Whitney while filming one of the greatest films of all time, The Bodyguard, and he closed with the one of the most heartbreaking things I ever heard: “Off you go Whitney, off you go. Escorted by an army of angels to your heavenly father. When you sing before him, don’t you worry. You will be good enough.” He can’t not be an amazing person after saying something that beautiful.

But wait! I have some more of Kevin Costner’s lovely words for you! He did an interview with Anderson Cooper that airs tomorrow, and he talked more about Whitney:

“There were some people that really loved Whitney and a couple times during the last seven/eight years [they] asked me would I write her a letter,” he said.

“When someone said, ‘Would you write someone a letter who you know is having trouble?’ I did. There were two occasions. I elected to let Whitney have her life after The Bodyguard and she would always be close to me. She would always be someone I appreciated. I saw pretty much what everyone else saw. But when someone asked me to write a letter I did. I don’t know if those letters were ever read.”

You can tell he really cares about her, can’t you? Just like he would have really cared about Princess Diana, who, by the way, was talking to him about doing a sequel to The Bodyguard before she died. Really:

“Diana and I had been talking about doing Bodyguard 2,” Costner said. “I told her I would take care of her just the same way that I took care of Whitney.

“She let me know that her life might be changing at some point, so she was having her own internal struggles. When she died, she was obviously all over the news. I knew that that was an interesting story that I had, but I never brought that up and a very good reporter, about a year later, somehow heard something and finally came to me and I said, ‘Yeah, that was true.’ Not that she was going to do it: That we were talking about doing it.

“She wanted me to write it for her,” he continues. “I said, ‘I’ll tailor it for you if you’re interested.’ She goes, ‘I am interested.’ And, then it came from the Royal Family, some people said, ‘No that’s not true, that’s not true.’ Kind of dissed me a little bit and I called them up and said, ‘Don’t do that, because it’s true. I didn’t talk about it when I could have a year earlier and I didn’t try to make it a story. Somebody else found this out and I said it was true, so don’t say it’s not true.’ And so they said, ‘OK.'”

Well, he seems like a bit of an odd bird, but I’m going to go ahead and put Kevin Costner on the good list, all right?

  • Couldn’t watch the bodyguard…was never into Whitney but I’ve always liked Kostner. Can’t really think of a movie he was in that I watched then hated.
