“I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry. Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment.”

—On Saturday, actor Matt Bomer accepted an award for his social contributions and, during his speech, acknowledged his partner and their three sons.

Matt Bomer (In Time, USA’s White Collar) really surprised—OK, “surprise” is too strong a word—when he tacitly confirmed his sexual preference before a huge audience.

Bomer was one of the honorees at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. It was during his acceptance speech for an award in “Arts and Activism” that Bomer publicly thanked his partner and kids. BOOM! That is how you do it! No show, no theatrics: you quietly lead by example instead. Very nice, Mr. Bomer.

Matt Bomer had never overtly denied his sexuality or lifestyle; neither has he ever felt the need to address his private life. From a 2010 interview in Details magazine:

Q: Does it bother you that so much of what’s been written about you is speculation that you’re gay?

A: I don’t care about that at all. I’m completely happy and fulfilled in my personal life.

Q: But you don’t want to talk about it.

A: I have a network and a show riding on my shoulders. I would say a big difference between my character and me is that I can be too trusting. And I’ve realized in this business, that’s not necessarily the smartest thing to be. I definitely have a thing or two to learn from the con artists.

That last quote makes me so sad, honestly. Can you believe that we still live in a place and time where you have to pretend like maybe you don’t love the people you love, all for the sake of your career?

Providentially, Bomer’s partner—Simon Halls—is a publicist. He represents both Glee‘s Ryan Murphy as well as my patron saint, NPH, so Halls knows a thing or two about being very successfully, openly gay. Lucky for Matt Bomer! He has a lot of support on his side.
