Lorde Calls Nicki Minaj “Irrelevant”

Lorde

Lorde better get ready for another fight with a female singer, since she’s (sort of) dissing Nicki Minaj and Lana Del Rey (and Drake, too!) for their music. Lorde is known for the hit “Royals”, a song that starts with “I’ve never seen a diamond in the flesh…” and she revealed what inspired her song about songs about opulence. From Interview magazine via HipHollywood:

Around the middle of last year I started listening to a lot of rap, like Nicki Minaj and Drake, as well as pop singers like Lana Del Rey. They all sing about such opulence, stuff that just didn’t relate to me—or anyone that I knew. I began thinking, ‘How are we listening to this? It’s completely irrelevant.’

Dude, Lana Del Rey sings about blue jeans and video games, so I don’t know what the hell Lorde is thinking. But I agree with her other points. I wonder if Minaj will miss the point and take this personally and respond like she’s dealing with Mariah again.

I’m mostly team Lorde, but she had no ground to throw Lana under the bus with Nicki and Drake, especially since Ms. Del Rey praised Lorde saying she wished her album, Born To Die was as good as Lorde’s Pure Heroin. Personally, I think Lana’s is miles better, though Lorde’s is great. I think Lorde is crazy-talented. And fine, yes, I love Lana. The End.

  • Definitely proof that teenage years are better spent away from the spotlight. Why would she go for nicki minaj, why? Of course nicki minaj and drake sing about opulence, they were poor as fuck as children and they finally can afford stuff. Many rap artists come from poor backgrounds and when they make it they brag about it. Lorde is going to be embarrassed of this in a few months.

    • Pretty sure that Drake (Aubrey Graham) wasn’t “poor as fuck” growing up. It sounds like he had a fairly middle class upbringing.

    • Where did you ever get the idea that Drake was “poor as fuck” as a kid? That motherfucker was on Degrassi for, like, eight or nine years.

    • Yeah I agree. Everyone has such a hard-on for her … sure she’s more self-aware than the average 16 year old, but she still doesn’t know shit about shit, yet.

  • I don’t think she meant the singers themselves were irrelevant but the topics they were singing about aren’t relatable to the public. Majority of people are not wealthy and throwing around their money so why do people keep listening to things they can’t really relate to? At least that’s how I took it.

  • She sounds like a pretentious little bitch shouldn’t she be in the big leagues for more than an hour before she starts telling ppl they are irrelevant and what they choose to sing/rap about is not relatable?
BTW Drake was not poor as fuck growing up.

  • this is my problem with lorde, she cant keep her mouth shut! she hates on anyones and if you ask her in an interview she will go on abour how real she is and how fake is everybody else. i dont even like minaj or drake but the are also not the first celebrities she has badmouthed. i cant stand this chick hope she fades away soon

  • I really like her because she speaks her mind. I wish more celebrities would stop with the ass-kissing.
    And besides that:
    1. Nicki Minaj IS irrelevant
    2. Born to die is way better than pure heroin.

  • Lana Del Rey doesn’t song about blue jeans OR video games.. Those titles have zero to do with the actual lyrics of the songs. I read them, so I know? I’m a big survival horror gamer I play in Tekken tournaments in NYC etc.. and it doesn’t take a gamer like me to know that song doesn’t say shit about actual video games. And that other one is about a dude, not blue jeans… Come on now..
