Shailene Woodley, Hollywood Starlet, Lives An “Alternative” Lifestyle

You just know Jennifer Lawrence is sprawled on her couch with half a Domino’s pizza, a packet of M&Ms and a bottle of beer, shaking her head in disgust at Shailene Woodley. You see, Shailene did a new interview with Flaunt in which she revealed that she collects her own water from mountains and makes her own toothpaste. You know, your general rich hippie faff about. Here it is in her own words:

“I think everything about my lifestyle is fairly alternative. I gather my own spring water from mountains every month.

“I go to a farm to get my food. I make everything from my own toothpaste to my own body lotions and face oils. I could go on for hours. I make my own medicines; I don’t get those from doctors.

“I make my own cheese and forage wild foods and identify wild plants. It’s an entire lifestyle. It’s appealing to my soul.”

Part of me was really sorta into this… until she got to the part about not using modern medicine. Girl, no. Of course there are homeopathic ways of dealing with certain conditions, and I think we could all learn more about balancing our body systems and the reasons we get ill rather than treating the symptoms, but modern medicine does exist for a reason. Grok back in the stone ages may have made his own medicines as well, but he also died at 38. Doctors – even though they may sometimes be wrong about shit or not “get it” – exist for a reason.

As for the other stuff, I kind of don’t understand how she has time to make her own cheese, forage wild foods, collect water, make body lotions and toothpastes (she’d have been perfect for The Hunger Games, lol)… and still have time to film several movies a year. Something’s a bit suspect there.  Who knows? I guess that’s good for her.

  • I don’t care what she does the whole rest of her life, that “I get my own spring water from the mountains” gem makes her completely intolerable.

And, uh, the fuck you do.

    • I agree with you on that one. It’s none of my business what she does with her life. If she wants to do things her own way, then let her.

  • Doctors usually make people sicker with their medications. They also tend to medicate symptoms and don’t treat the cause. She’s a highly intelligent woman. I’m sure it’s annoying to the average person who just can’t comprehend the realities of a modern lifestyle. But we’ve got some mind numbing psychiatric drugs and tons of wheat and soy for those people. They’ll forget their irritations quickly…..

    • If a person finds that the psychiatric drug they’re taking is causing them to feeel numb, it is not the right drug for them. Psych meds are not one size fits all, and there is often a period of trial and error. I’m speaking from experience.

    • I eat a grain-free, sugar-free, low GI diet, so I know what you mean about what “doctors” tell us (read ‘Wheat Belly’ – this is a great example of doctors’ – in large part – idiocy) but to say that modern medicine isn’t useful and important is ridiculous, and I think a) Shailene Woodley hasn’t been faced with anything nearing a medical emergency and b) might change her tune if she contracted typhoid or malaria or something. What medicine ya gonna whip up for that one, eh?

As for psychiatric drugs, I do agree they’re over-prescribed, but it’s not for me to quantify who needs them and doesn’t. They certainly have their place and many feel their lives are actually liveable when taking them, so who am I to judge? The point of this whole thing is that Shailene Woodley is either lying and trying to convince everyone that she’s super into ~living off the land~ or she’s really not very intelligent. (I haven’t decided which, haha!)

  • I agree with Jackie on that one. It’s none of my business what she does with her life. If she wants to do things her own way, then let her.
