Ethan Hawke Reveals Why His Marriage Failed

Ethan Hawke told Elle magazine in their September issue his theories as to why his first marriage failed (he’s currently married to his kids’ nanny). You know what? Scratch that. The “failed” part. Just because you got divorced doesn’t mean you failed. If anything, realizing shit isn’t working out and getting out of a bad situation is a success. But wow, that is an entirely different post.

So, yeah. Ethan Hawke. Remember when he was married to Uma Thurman? They were married for about 6 years. They were kind of a big deal. Now Mr. Hawke is revealing why it didn’t work. Simply, he believes he was too young to be married. From Elle:

Success when you’re young is really overwhelming. The world felt out of control. And I wanted to stop it from spinning so fast. I thought marriage would decrease my variables or something. I was absolutely wrong. There was this discovery that the male brain isn’t done until 28. I definitely think my frontal lobe was not finished. I had no business taking vows that would last more than two weeks.

FYI, Hawke got married at 27. Which, yes, is young but it’s not like he was 16.

How young do you think is too young to get married?

  • I got married at 27 and I certainly don’t feel it’s too young an age. I think it’s maturity that is needed, and sounds like he was lacking…

  • Haaaaa, what a cop out! Dude cheated on Uma, just like he probably cheats on his gold digging nanny wife. Damn fool.

  • There are men and women in their mid 30’s who are ‘too young’ to get married. It’s not so much an age thing as it is identifying your priorities and realizing whether or not you’re truly able to commit to one person.

Some people can do it when they’re 19, some can’t do it in their 40’s.

  • I got married at 27, and I certainly don’t think that’s too young. Now, the first guy I was engaged to – at 21 – we were stupid. That’s one I had no business marrying and thank god I didn’t. As far as Ethan, you can’t blame age for wanting to have his cake and eat it, too.

  • I think people under 23 –that is, one year younger than me– are usually too young to marry, although as bah pointed out, it all depends on your personal level of maturity.

  • I think under 25 is probably too young to be married. I also personally think people should be together for at least like 3 years or so minimum before getting married.
