Will Smith’s Kid Is Crazy Spoiled; Wants To Be Emancipated

Will Smith and Jada have an approach to parenting that is different from most. In that they don’t really parent. I say this because parenting requires setting boundaries with your children and punishing them when necessary. Unless you’re Will Smith’s kids in which, WHEEEEE! Here’s his parenting philosophy (via Radaronline):

We generally don’t believe in punishmentFrom the time Jaden was five or six, we would sit him down, and all he has to do is be able to explain why what he did was the right thing for his life. I think it’s a much more difficult question to ask someone —’Why was that right?’ — than to try to show them why it was wrong. Nobody wants to be wrong, all parts of yourself fight like crazy to not be wrong. So I’ll say to Jaden, ‘Why was that the right thing to do for your life?’ and if he can explain why kicking his sister in the chest was the right thing to do, we can see to it that he understands that it wasn’t so smart.

LOL 5 YEAR-OLDS DO NOT HAVE THAT KIND OF RATIONAL THOUGHT, THAT’S WHY THEY’RE 5 AND THAT’S WHY YOU’RE AN ADULT. Oh my God. No wonder his kid, Jaden, thinks he can handle life on his own at the upcoming age of 15:

He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated.’ I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place, like ‘Ooh.’ That’s the backlash. On the other side, if kids just want to have command of their lives, I understand.

What? What are you even talking about?

God I can’t stand this family. Their kids were given everything on a silver platter. They didn’t have to do a damn thing to get careers and major acting roles and record deals. They did zero things but exist. Jaden sat down and chatted with the mother effing President of the United States. Do you think he even realizes that this is not a normal childhood experience? I hope they know how lucky they are.

Go ahead, come at me. I’m not budging on this one.

  • I feel like Will’s kids are missing the x-factor (not to be confused with the TV show) that made Will Smith such a massive star, while still retaining enormous likability. Maybe because they come across as so very spoiled – although that’s not their fault of course.

Anyway, I mainly wanted to say A+ clip usage – that little rant has made my day!

  • I don’t see a problem. They seem to be good kids. And most intelligent five-year-olds absolutely have developing reasoning skills, and talking to them as is described there is a great way to foster a sense of moral reasoning. It’s the job of adults to teach children, and a great way of teaching is to ask them questions and have them work out a response (the Socratic method isn’t just for school).

Am I jealous of the things that they’ve had? Absolutely. And not just because my childhood was unpleasant–even people lucky enough to have had happy childhoods would be understandably jealous. But what teenager does not want his or her own residence? In most families, it is not practical. For the Smith family, it would probably be very doable. *I* wouldn’t do it, but I wouldn’t be surprised or offended if my child mentioned the desire.

I don’t understand *resenting* them because they are reaping the benefits of their parents’ success. Especially considering that, so far, they seem to have turned out very well. If I became very wealthy and chose to have children, I would absolutely want for my children to benefit.

  • No, they don’t. They’re five. They think it’s perfectly acceptable to wear a cape, footie pajamas and an innertube to school. Five year olds want to jump on the bed, eat cereal, never shower or brush their teeth. Fuck, this is how kids are so messed up now. We try to do this thing where we don’t want to parent; where being their ‘friend’ is more important.

All of this reasoning and rationalizing with children just sound like lazy parenting to me. If you aren’t willing to set boundaries and rules for your children, then kindly rip your reproductive organs out and sit them on the floor.

  • I agree with LeeLee, Will Smith has this likability/charm and charisma that seems to make him an extremely relatable celebrity. His films have benefited from this and his career has been blockbuster. But I think his kids are more like their mother, she doesn’t have the same charisma or charm. In the interviews I’ve read of hers she comes off as holier than thou and judgy, she probably isn’t but she doesn’t come through as a likeable or relatable persona. I don’t see their kids having the same career once they grow out of the childrens movies role. I’ve never had kid actors ever annoy me as much as these two do, it’s kinda surprising to me even.

  • I cannot stand Will Smith! He’s untalented and pointless! BIG SURPRISE his kids are ego maniacs.. spoiled brats who have everything they want!!!! Are we really shocked when they grow up to be assholes???? NOPE. This is what he deserves! Laugh with me everyone MUAHAHAHAHAHH.

  • I remember seeing will smith on oprah (i swear i was just flicking channels) and he seemed proud that his sons goal was to “have a bigger house than his dads”. This kid has never encountered anything close to reality he is douche beyond douche. i know I should let it go but look at the little prick he can’t even smile. I loathe him.

  • This kids are beyond spoiled!! I hate that jaden makes that damn face in EVERY photo!! OMG it so fucking stupied! U don’t like those kids!!
