Beyoncé Had Conversations With Blue Ivy in the Womb

Beyoncé is the queen of the free world, so it’s no surprise that she’s covering the March issue of Vogue, appearing in a multi-page photo spread and accompanying interview in which she says a lot about very little. It’s only natural that a celebrity of her caliber would be reticent when it comes to sharing details about her personal life, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen another star who could answer endless questions with such extreme vagueness. Whatever, it’s Beyoncé. She can do what she wants.

Of course, the media loves to concentrate on the experience of motherhood and its necessary softening fact on the women who choose to bear children. They loved their careers before, sure, but they pop one out and suddenly they are softer, less abrasive, more womanly. It’s bullshit and has never been the case for Bey, who was back on her grind just weeks after giving birth to Blue Ivy. Still, that didn’t stop Vogue from desperately trying to push the image of a cooing Beyoncé home to us. Newsflash: you can love your child and your profession. The two are not mutually exclusive.

But outside this little room, there’s a gentle, sweet, unmistakable noise. The soft cry of a baby. And though Beyoncé has started a thought about her new album, she pauses and listens and just visibly melts. And in this moment, it becomes clear that while her career and her business are vital and essential, the life of Beyoncé Knowles has forever changed.

“She’s about to go to sleep,” Beyoncé says, beaming.

She, of course, is Blue Ivy Carter, born to Beyoncé and her husband, the hip-hop mogul Shawn Carter, a.k.a. Jay-Z, on January 7, 2012, in New York City, to the breathless rush of public attention that usually attends a royal birth. Now the curly-haired one-year-old is Beyoncé’s light, her constant companion, the adorable darling making cameos on her Tumblr. “She’s my road dog,” Beyoncé says. “She’s my homey, my best friend.”

Like, I get it – she loves her kid. Of course she does. Most parents who want the role are absolutely nuts about their little ones and think the world shines out of their baby assholes. It’s natural! But I don’t think Beyoncé is suddenly any less the fierce presence she once was just because an infant swam down her vagina. On the other hand, the lady herself does admit that labour was a bit of a freaky-deaky experience:

“I felt very maternal around eight months,” she remembers. “And I thought I couldn’t become any more until I saw the baby. . .. But it happened during my labor because I had a very strong connection with my child. I felt like when I was having contractions, I envisioned my child pushing through a very heavy door. And I imagined this tiny infant doing all the work, so I couldn’t think about my own pain. . .  We were talking. I know it sounds crazy, but I felt a communication.”

That doesn’t sound crazy – obviously pushing a human being out of your body is gonna put you in a zone that those who haven’t gone through that process won’t really “get” – not in a fundamental way, but just in an experiential one. Like, I’ve never been hang-gliding, so I can’t really talk shit about what the wind feels like in your face as you float down to earth, etc. You get my point. I just wish magazines would stop trying to get people coo over motherhood and belittling experiences outside of it/that came before.

Anyway, let’s just look at the pretty pictures and switch off our minds. Photos from Beyoncé’s Vogue shoot below.

  • WTF!!, this is the stupidest shit I’ve ever read about child birth especially your first. The only thing going through your mind is “GET THIS THING OUTTA ME!!!!,her story is not believable.Child birth is not unicorns, pixie dust and fluffy clouds..

    • You know. That’s what I am saying. Contractions are so fierce and coming in the front and back. You are not thinking about contractions and a large door. You are screaming get this thing out of me. That is exactly what I said. My mother was like “Its not a thing he’s a baby!” I told her I didnt care. Get it out of me LOL. You dont think of doors and shit. She doesnt get it. But sometimes, its just better to be real. Just say that shit was painful but it was worth it. She thinks that we want to know her business. No. We just want her to be honest and not say what sounds good but what is real. That shit hurt and it felt like she took the door off that mutha when she came out. Or else I cannot believe that you had a baby. And then you are saying that you did it naturally too and that is your response. Please I was so greatful for my epidural. But my sister went natural and when she crowned I have never heard anything so deep and scary and growling in my my whole life. Sorry B try again.

  • I’m sorry, but where does it belittle what came before the baby? “And in this moment, it becomes clear that while her career and her business are vital and essential, the life of Beyoncé Knowles has forever changed.” Your life *does* change when you have a child; that doesn’t necessarily imply (unless some sanctimommy says it flat out) that lives without children aren’t great. So Beyonce lights up when she hears her child – what mom doesn’t? But nowhere does she – nor the interviewer – say that her life before the baby is now null and void. I think that – once again – you’re reading too much into this. Just because magazines like to ask stars about what it’s like to be a mom – and they generally like to gush about it – does not mean that everyone else they are doing is no longer legitimate and important, nor that childless people are somehow less awesome. Again, I know that some people *do* feel that way and are bitches about it, but there’s no need to read that into places where that’s not what’s going on.

    • We can agree to disagree here, but this part sort of says it all:

“But outside this little room, there’s a gentle, sweet, unmistakable noise. The soft cry of a baby. And though Beyoncé has started a thought about her new album, she pauses and listens and just visibly melts. And in this moment, it becomes clear that while her career and her business are vital and essential, the life of Beyoncé Knowles has forever changed.”

Oh, the “gentle coo” of the baby stops her from caring at all about (talking about) her career. Sure, success was great, but aren’t babies WAY BETTER? It’s the smarminess of the piece that grates – and I blamed that on the journalist, not Bey. I’m a big Beyoncé fan but as Blu posted above, childbirth is not fairy dust and unicorns and I wish it could be talked about the way it is: rewarding, life-changing perhaps, but hard as hell.

      • It is talked about in that way, too. Just not in this piece. I don’t know, i just really don’t see the issue here. Good for Bey that she loves her child so much. And she’s still working, still putting out music, still touring. Yes, perhaps the writer overplayed the reaction a bit. But I think you are overplaying this whole soapbox of yours, too. Some people like having babies. That’s not a personal affront to you.

    • Unless, as I said before, some asshole or bitch actually tells you that you are worth less than they are because they have children and you don’t. In which case, feel free to punch them right in the reproductive area. =)

    • Her fold in half bump was kind of weird. After seeing that, I don’t think she gave birth and this media spin and her words confirm that for me.

  • “She’s my road dog,” Beyoncé says. “She’s my homey, my best friend.”

What kind of an imbecile calls their infant daughter “my homey”? And what dumbass publication would print this nonsense? As far as her having conversations with the baby in the womb, that only happened if she was speaking to someone else’s stomach.

She and her husband are way overrated, over-hyped, and hopefully over and out real soon.

    • I was thinking the same thing about the whole .. having conversations with the baby in womb ?? She was having those conversations like a baby daddy would be having a conversation with his baby in womb. BK actually giving birth I call fraud and I don’t really get why there are tons of celebs that have adopted and or used surogates. Why the lies nobody gives a rats ass

  • I am beginning to think that Beyonce is super nuts. That woman didn’t give birth. Her surrogate must either get the best salary in the world or was threatened to keep her mouth shut.

    • This is just another one of Miss Beyonce’s inaguration live performances Yes she could give birth to her own baby but it’s a lot easier to have “some help from behind the scenes” for somthin this important.

  • YEP… I have to agree that Beyonce didnt look any pregnant at all, when she stood on stage on one of those award winning shows and announced that she was pregnant and tried to show the baby bump, it did not look very real to me and she stood sideways and there was not much of a bump which is fine, her pregagncy coul dhave been in the early stages… she also did not look very genuine. her facial expression…….after that you never saw or heard anything further on the media of any real photos of her with a really pregnant belly. I can totally agree that she must of had a surrogate…and I guess she did that so she can get right back to work after the baby came….not forgetting she did not want to messup her body with pregnancy/childbirth!!!…is what my true feelings are!!!

    • Her breasts didn’t get any larger when she was pregnant. They weren’t bigger after pregnancy either. They never changed at all – which is very odd.

  • Maybe I am missing something but those pictures of Beyonce in Vogue do not make her look soft. She just isn’t glamous to me she looks dull. I do not understand her langague her baby is her roaddog, homey this does not sound like a woman who gave birth to a baby. I do not know if she gave birth to her child or not but from the way she describes her childs birth is just strange. One thing is for sure if she is planning on having another baby she needs to do it soon oppose to later. her nor Jay-Z are getting any younger unless they plan on adopting a sister or brother for blue-ivy or they have store their eggs and plan on using a surrogate.

  • She is a fraud, fake and phoney. All she cares abt is being on stage. She dkdt want a baby anyway. A blind person can tell when a mother has genuine love for her children…this chick does not. She has all yall fooled with her non acting, non dancing, 1 octave voice having a??. She is one that will use whomever to get to the top and she has done so very successfully.

  • We all know she wasn’t pregnant! trying to fool people and it works. APPLAUSE goes to BeyondFake….I mean Beyoncé.

  • Blue ivy is a mixture of jay z solonge beyonce and tiny beyonce grand mother etc beyonce has a right to have a baby blue ivy is hers the only difference is the public didn’t see it tamar we saw too much and weather she had a baby or adopt or intertilzation who care we to judge her she is a performer she can t a key a break to raise a family she has every right to she is beyonce and human being
