First of all, I haven’t seen it yet. I know, but I just don’t enjoy going to see movies right when they’re released. There’s too many people, and it makes me uncomfortable and also I can’t focus on the movie because some dude keeps checking his stupid cell phone. It’s annoying, and I’d much rather wait a couple of weeks to ensure that the crowds have died down. But make no mistake, I am DYING to see Les Mis. Absolutely dying.
But Adam Lambert has already seen it. He’s, like, way unimpressed, and here are the tweets to prove it:
Les Mis: Visually impressive w great Emotional performances. But the score suffered massively with great actors PRETENDING to be singers.
…it’s an opera. Hollywoods movie musicals treat the singing as the last priority. (Dreamgirls was good)
Anne Hathaway as Fantine and Enjolras were the exceptions for me.
Helena B Carter and Sasha B Cohen were great too.
And I do think it was cool they were singing live- but with that cast, they should have studio recorded and sweetened the vocals
Eponine’s voice was cool too…
I felt like I should ignore the vocals and focus on the emotional subtext- but the singing was so distracting at times it pulled me out.
The industry will say “these actors were so brave to attempt singing this score live”but why not cast actors who could actually sound good?

I’m so glad we are all discussing this now! Look-I grew up w this musical and so my expectations are quite high. Didn’t mean to b negative.
One more clarification: DO go see it for Anne Hathaways performance. It’s was breathtaking.
So basically, Adam Lambert hates Hugh Jackman. That’s it, right? And probably Russell Crowe, maybe Amanda Seyfried. Which is kind of weird, because all of my nerdy theatre friends went crazy over this movie, and they didn’t have anything negative to say about Hugh’s performance. It seems like Anne Hathaway was completely amazing, according to every review I’ve ever read, and that Russell Crowe just did not sound good at all. But that’s weird that Adam didn’t like Hugh Jackman, one of the actors who is actually very experienced in musical theatre.
Did you guys see this yet? Should I be as psyched as I am? Does Adam Lambert need to shut his stupid face?

Have never liked Adam Lambert, have no respect for him now if he refuses to recognize how amazing Hugh Jackman did in this movie. Jackman is 10x the singer that Lambert is… No, 100x the singer. Eh, what can you expect from a runner up on American Idol who clearly thinks too highly of himself. Pfft.
I won’t argue that Hathaway got great reviews from almost everyone. But the rest of the cast got mixed reviews. Admittedly Crowe took more heat than most.
What I’ve heard is the actors often strained while struggling to find the notes. It wasn’t simply a matter of emotional connection, and that includes Jackman. I remember a number of critiques of his 1 man show cited his singing as being noticeably weaker than his dancing. But overall he was more than fine for that show. However most of the cast received praise for certain scenes they were in. But Anne seemed to balance her singing and emotional life the best.
I don’t like Lambert that much he can be out of line (okay he does have great voice) but he’s not saying anything many other people haven’t said.
You may not LIKE the fact that the movie turned out really uneven but that’s another story. Learn not to buy into early-hype & overly verbose fans & this won’t seem so outrageous.
I agree with him, they were mostly awful except Annie, Sascha and Helena. Anne was great in her role and Sascha and Helena smartly chose roles they could handle the singing in. The others were brutal. It was terrible.
Also, people saying “ADAM LAMBERT CAN’T SING EITHER” need to shush – Adam Lambert didn’t take the lead role in Les Mis so he’s not the one whose performance is being graded.
i agree completely. i have never felt the need to walk out of a movie in my life, the only things that kept me were the bits that were good, which as you said were Anne, Sascha and Helena.
I don’t like him at all but I completely agree with his opinion about this movie. Annie and Helena were the only good ones, and Samantha barks has a great voice but her acting was really mediocre
Does anyone really care what Adam Lambert says anymore? What exactly has he done lately?

Adam Lambert is a very talented singer who has had vocal training. He also has experience in the broadway theatre. Whether you value his opinion or not is irrelevant; the fact remains, it is his opinion and he has a right to it. He is much more qualified than most of us here might be and many people, with even more qualifications than he has, agree completely with what he said. Therefore, if you want to see the movie, go see it..you might enjoy it very much. He did not. That simple.
If we are going to treat his opinion as more worthy than others’ due to his training and experience (instead of seeing it as uninteresting due to his lack of recent noteworthy activities) then I think he should use said training and experience in his criticism (in the “arts criticism” sense.) I see maybe 3.5 sentences that I could categorize that way. The remainder are what he thinks are “good” or “cool” or not. Since I don’t care about Mr. Lambert as a person, I don’t care what he likes. If he had more to say in the vein of an arts critic, I would certainly read it.
Care about him as a person huh? How many of these people do you know personally? He wasn’t writing a “critique” but what he tweeted is a common criticism for the movie. And he is very credible discussing voice work because he is an amazing vocalist, well trained with a beautiful voice.
I don’t like his music but his latest album did well. You must care to some extent or why post about it? I agree that that his comments can be out of line but not necessarily wrong.
He needs to shut his stupid (jealous) face. Hugh was amazing, Crowe was better than expected and there were a lot of stand out performances besides Hathaway. Samantha Barks was absolutely incredible.
He’s right except that Anne also sucked because she tried to outshine and out-sing everyone. Hugh had way too much singing and his voice started sounding tired by hour 2. The movie is way too long and there was too much damn singing, most of it so mediocre. They should have used more speaking to speed the plot along. But Helena and Sasha were fantastic, as were Eddie Redmayne and girl playing Eponyne. They were excellent. But Anne was just too much. She is always just too much. Chick needs to learn how to tone it down and be a team player. She is so f**king TRY.
