Lady Gaga! What did you do this time? Was it another shitty music video? Did you say something ridiculously pretentious again? What could it be?
Oh, you tweeted about how pop stars don’t eat? That’s cool.
Lady Gaga has always stood for self-acceptance, encouraging her fans (a.k.a. her Little Monsters) to love themselves for who they are. She’s even spoken out against “the dieting wars.”
So the pop star, 26, caused quite a stir when she Tweeted a message about not eating to her 22.7 million followers.
“Just killed back to back spin classes. Eating a salad dreaming of a cheeseburger #PopSingersDontEat #IWasBornThisWay,” Gaga Tweeted Tuesday.
What’s more, the singer has admitted to struggling with an eating disorder herself. Asked about body confidence at a California high school conference, Gaga revealed that she “used to throw up all the time in high school.”
“The dieting wars have got to stop. Everyone just knock it off,” she said at the time. “Because at the end of the day, it’s affecting kids your age – and it’s making girls sick.”
Her recent Tweet drew loads of criticism from Twitter users, including the National Eating Disorders Association, which replied, “Huh? This is the same person who recently implored girls to stop dieting?”
While some fans defended Gaga, saying she was just Tweeting in jest, others were upset by the message.
“I don’t care if Lady Gaga’s #popstarsdonteat tweet is ironic,” wrote @carolyngreg. “still sends the wrong msg to her MILLIONS of teen girl fans.”
Well, whatever, basically. Lady Gaga still hasn’t addressed this whole mess, and if she ever does, I’m sure it will be some wordy, “heartfelt” statement about bullying or whatever. Poor Lady Gaga! She’s so aware that she has millions of impressionable young fans that follow her and her anti-bullying, self-acceptance talk and she lets them know that pop stars don’t eat, and now people are calling her out on it! Bless her heart!
Personally, I don’t care. I don’t have the energy anymore to get super upset over stupid things that Lady Gaga says, but I can see where other people would. Even if her statement was a little tongue-in-cheek, she probably should have known better. She’s bound to have quite a few younger fans who do want to be pop stars and who already have eating disorders or self esteem issues, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a few teenagers skipped some meals this week because of this.
So let’s stop taking Lady Gaga so seriously now, all right, everyone?
