A photo of Queen Latifah

Did you guys have a good weekend? Because I did, but I am so tired. I got a new apartment in a new town with my boyfriend, and I learned that I own approximately seven thousand more items than I thought I did, but hardly anything that I actually need. Friday night was spent huddled and shivering because we refused to turn on the way-too-expensive heat, and Saturday night was spent shopping for things like plates and cleaning supplies and dish towels and oh my God these rugs cost HOW MUCH? And, in the middle of all that, I chopped all my hair off. So yeah, it’s been a pretty eventful weekend.

I’m sure many of you had a lot going on this weekend as well, so let’s just take a moment for Queen Latifah to make us feel beautiful, as only Queen Latifah can:

“People say, ‘You have such beautiful skin!’ But guess what? I get pimples, too. I mean, (expletive), I’m a woman, I have hormones. Who knows what is going on? I’ve just got to roll with it. … The reality is, I like imperfection. You take away from the world when you’re not yourself. Whatever is unique and special about you was designed by God. And when you try to be someone else, we don’t get you.”

Breathe in … aaaaaand … release. Thanks, Queen! You always know just what to say!

Photo: Blake Lively celebrates Gossip Girl's 100th episode

Let’s cut to the chase: this is what Blake Lively wore to a fête celebrating Gossip Girl‘s hundredth episode. There’s a lot of fringe, a lot of cleavage—and, as Amy Grindhouse tells it, there is also a “butt window.”

I do like how ethereal this gown is—I do!—but remember, there is also a “butt window.”

But it’s so mermaidy! Look at that filigree curling along Blake’s bosom! I sincerely almost love this dress. Okay, no, I don’t love where the fringe falls on Blake’s calf, but the dress is probably so pretty in motion! And Blake’s hair? In those seaweedy coils, that tangled topknot? And those pearlescent teardrop earrings? I have never seen anything more mermaidy.

But—again, to quote Amy Grindhouse—there is also a butt window.

Ethereal or appalling?

Photo: Jason Segel with the Muppets on Saturday Night Live

I have to be honest with you: I didn’t watch all of last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live (hosted by the lovable Jason Segel!), but this was not entirely my fault. For instance: right after Segel’s monologue, SNL reaired “Red Flag.” And I was so confused! I initially thought this was an old episode, even in spite of the presence of Muppets. Muppets, everywhere! And then I discovered this was a new episode after all, and so I only felt shortchanged.

I did see the opening monologue, which was adorbs. (Segel is busily promoting The Muppets: Green with Envy, which he also wrote, so of course the Muppets turned up.)

Next came a sketch where they were auditioning celebrities for Regis’ spot next to Kelly Ripa. This skit wasn’t funny “ha-ha”—you could tell that the writers had made a list of every celebrity impersonation every current SNL castmember could do and worked from there. The skit was, however, kind of a barrage of awesome.

I was fairly wowed by Kenan Thompson’s Charles Barkley impression. I don’t really think of the kid as much of an actor, but it was funny.

I have intimated in the past that absolutely everything Bill Hader does will wreck me, and his Garrison Keillor impression was almost too much for my poor little heart. Abby Elliott’s takedown of Zooey Deschanel was pitch-perfect (Elliott is such a good whistler!), while Taran Killam’s Ashton Kutcher was on this side of amazing. Disheartening: Jay Pharoah’s Denzel. The kid is so talented, but this simply wasn’t up to snuff. The audience seemed to hear it, but I couldn’t.

The whole sketch, sadly, was proof positive that there is literally nothing for “featured player” Paul Brittain to do. Sorry, man.

Last week Justin Timberlake attended a Marine Corps Ball, just as he said he would; on Friday night, it was Mila’s turn.

Kunis met her date, Sgt. Scott Moore, at the gala. She wore a simple black gown to the formal event, which was held in Greenville, North Carolina. (Sgt. Moore only recently returned from Afghanistan.)

There are only two photos from the Ball, and not much else in the way of story, so, uh.

Here’s something! In less-reported news, Kristin Cavallari also accepted an invitation to a Marine Corps Ball, though this one was extended via Twitter. She attended the gala on Thursday night, looking absolutely killer in an aquamarine Grecian dress. And—this is the cutest part of the story—Cavallari stayed for the entire event. The girl knows how to lock a party down!

Photo: Debbie Harry: with a wig, and without!

So I was very quickly skimming this Daily Mail article about how Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s marriage is already dunzo, and that is how I scrolled right down to a hot photo of Debbie Harry. You know, the frontwoman of Blondie? (Ugh, kids these days.)

And I wondered what exactly Deborah Harry had changed about her appearance—I mean, the woman has never looked bad, per se, but here she looked really good—and it slowly dawned on me that I was actually admiring the cut on her asymmetrical, albinism-white wig. Like, this is totally a Lady Gaga wig.

And 66-year-old (!!) Harry is not afraid to change it up: in the last month or so, she has worn her locks, real and faux, tens of ways. And! Sometimes when her real hair isn’t working out, she’s just like, “Screw it,” and she puts on a hoodie or a hat.

I have assembled a gallery of Debbie Harry’s myriad looks from the last year (below) so that we might all marvel at this Rock Icon’s ferocity.

Photo: Neil Patrick Harris with David Burtka at the gala, Nov 12

I sort of go out of my way not to be Soap Box Johnny.

Neil Patrick Harris takes a question from Marc Malkin at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s 40th Anniversary Gallery and Auction on November 12. The evening’s theme? “40 Years of Family.” (NPH and partner David Burtka have twins together.)

Then Harris clarified, indicating that his family has chosen a quieter sort of advocacy: “We’re super happy to lead by example, but even to define ourselves in any kind of leadership position I think is awkward… I cringe when I hear people say they consider themselves role models.”
