Kristen Wiig Honored as GQ’s ‘Bro of the Year’

Photo: Kristen Wiig named GQ's Bro of the Year

Congratulations are in order for Kristen Wiig, who has been named GQ‘s “Bro of the Year.”

It’s an especially notable distinction: most of GQ‘s Men of the Year are, well, men. (The 2009 Bro of the Year, for instance, was Paul Rudd.) This didn’t stop GQ from photographing Wiig in some pointedly un-bro-like lingerie, but whatever. I do like that she apparently drinks champagne through a straw.

The profile accompanying Wiig’s accolade was penned by none other than her Bridesmaids costar, Jon Hamm. His article is, uh, a lot shorter than GQ‘s other MOTY articles—here’s Michael Shannon’s profile, for comparison—but Hamm’s take on Wiig’s meteoric rise is complimentary and earnest.

He begins his profile of Wiig by describing their Bridesmaids sex scene together:

Bounding around in a flesh-colored thong, trying not to sweat all over Kristen while a hundred crew members are literally like, “Can we get this done, please?”—our embarrassment coupled with everyone else’s exhaustion lent that scene a particularly awkward sensibility. But it was inspiring to watch Kristen quarterback the team, be the cheerleader and decisionmaker, and then get in front of the camera and be hilarious.

Hamm goes on to give Wiig away as an “incredibly shy” person, for whom over-the-top acting is just that: an act. “But this is a woman who wore coconuts on her tits on SNL,” Hamm reassures us. “She can go to the craziest, most grotesque places on the planet in character.”

  • I think Wiig is very talented performer. However, I get tired of the recurring roles they give her on SNL, where she seems to be playing the same anxious, spastic, neurotic person in all of them. Her Kathy Lee Gifford is indeed wicked, however.

  • Loco, I’ve noticed the same thing and it sucks! They’re milking her shtick the same way they did with Will Ferrell. I hope they freshen things up before I’m rolling my eyes at every Kristen Wiig movie trailer.
