Who Is America’s Most Popular Celebrity?

Reuters and Ipsos teamed up to poll America on their most well-loved and their least favorite celebrities, and can you guess who won the number one spot in America’s heart? Here, I’ll give you a couple hints. This girl got a golden opportunity a few years back in a commercial, and she went on to have a pretty impressive resurgence in popularity. I say resurgence because she’s been around for a while. Because she’s old.

Have you got it?

It’s Betty White! Surprise!

Actually, I don’t think it’s all that shocking that Betty White is considered the most popular celebrity right now. Come on, did you even see her on Saturday Night Live? Girl absolutely killed it, no one’s going to forget that performance any time soon. And with all the Golden Girls reruns on the Hallmark channel from like 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM (then Cheers comes on – who else finds that devastating?), you know a whole new generation is falling in love with her. No, what’s far more shocking, to me, at least, is the rest of the list.

1. Betty White – 86% Favorable
2. Denzel Washington – 85%
3. Sandra Bullock – 84%
4. Clint Eastwood – 83%
5. Tom Hanks – 81%
6. Harrison Ford – 80%
7. Morgan Freeman – 79% (tie)
7. Kate Middleton (Duchess of Cambridge) – 79% (tie)
9. Will Smith – 77%
10. Johnny Depp – 76%

And the top ten least popular:

1. Paris Hilton – 60% Unfavorable
2. Charlie Sheen – 52%
3. Britney Spears – 45% (tie)
3. Kanye West – 45% (tie)
5. Arnold Schwarzenegger – 44%
6. Tiger Woods – 42%
7. Kim Kardashian – 38%
8. Mel Gibson – 33%
9. Donald Trump – 31%
10. LeBron James – 29%

Why is Britney Spears so unpopular still? She is trying, you know. And poor Kim Kardashian! What did she ever do to you? Goodness gracious. But still, even through all this surprise, I can still sit back and breathe a sigh of relief that America still has enough sense to see the majesty of Betty White.

    • Why wouldn’t she be? A celebrity does not have to be an actor, singer, etc. to be so. A celebrity is simply (according to ::ahem:: Wikipedia) “a person who has a prominent profile in the media and is easily recognized.” Sounds like Kate fits the bill…
