Betty White Tells CNN That Bea Arthur Didn’t Like Her, Which Is Awful To Hear

This is a little old, but wayyy too important not to mention.

Betty White did Joy Behar’s show on May 4th (click here to see the video,) and when asked by Joy if she liked everyone she worked with on Golden Girls, Betty said, “Oh yes, oh yes. Bea was not that fond of me, but I loved her.”

Woah. Okay, this is not Monday morning news, right? We’re all too fragile right now to be hearing this, right? I’m going to keep going, so you can stop reading here if you don’t want any more details.

Betty said that she has no idea what she did to get on the late Bea Arthur‘s bad side, but that never stopped her from loving and admiring her. Damn, do you think that Bea could see into the future and knew that Betty would be the last Golden Girl standing and America’s Oldest Sweetheart? What gives?

I’m pretty upset by this. You dealin’?

  • That kind of sucks, but doesn’t surprise me. Betty may not have liked Bea either..but shes a goody goody and most likely wouldn’t tarnish her reputation by telling the truth. Betty seems like a fun, gregarious, flirtatious person…I’d love to read her autobiography if she ever writes one!

    • Bea, a goody-goody? Please. The role of Blanche was written for Betty, and Rose for Rue, but the actresses decided to switch (Rue didn’t want to be typecast as a goody-goody, and Betty was tired of playing maneating cougars).

But you’re right. Bea Arthur was a consummate professional, a real stage actor, and Betty White was too much a ham — always breaking character, mugging at the audience, that kind of thing. That’s what drove Bea up the wall. But they never “had it out” or anything like that.

      • Jenn,
Sadie was saying that Betty White is a goody goody, not Bea! It was Betty White trying to be the cosumate professional

  • In the first season of Maude, Episode 17: Arthur Moves In, Maude/Bea is home by herself watching TV. The tonight show is about to come on TV and an announcer says that tonight’s guests are Alan Ludden and Betty White. Maude/Bea quickly turns off the TV and says she would rather hit herself.

  • I found this clip of Miss Arthur’s final interview with Bea discussing her career and life in her own words. I think it’s for a show called, “Lunching with a Legend.”

I’d hate for a full interview with Bea or the other legendary ladies in the clip to go unseen. I’d like to see if she final discusses her service in her final interview.
