Remembering Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes

Today’s kinda a rough day for kids who grew up the 90s and hip hop fans alike. It’s the nine year anniversary of the death of Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes, the sparkplug rapper from 90s girl group TLC. I remember being in school when I heard the news that Left Eye had passed and it was pretty devastating. TLC hadn’t come out with a record since 1999 and Lisa’s 2001 solo effort was somewhat of a dud. She’d also dealt with a lot of scandal in her personal life, most notably when she lit a pair of her boyfriend’s sneakers on fire and left them to burn in the bathtub of her home.

I was such a huge TLC fan growing up that I remember watching the premiere of that show All That (remember that one? Staring that nutbag Amanda Bynes and current SNL cast member Kenan Thompson?) just so I could see them perform as the musical guest. I was home alone and my mom called to check in on me right as they were about to take the stage, and since this was pre-DVR, I hung up the phone on her mid-sentence just so I could watch them boogie down in over-sized overalls to their song “Creep.”

If you have any memories about Lisa or TLC, feel free to hit up the comments. Otherwise, rest in peace, Left Eye. We miss you, girl.

  • VH1 did an EXCELLENT doc on LIsa years ago…..I still havce it on tape….. it was SO GOOD….. a great tribute.

  • TLC’s Ooohhhh On The TLC Tip was the first TAPE I bought with my own hard earned money as a kid. I wanted to be a singer when I was a kid and they were a huge influence for me. I can still rap Lisa’s verse on Something Wicked This Way Comes like it just came out and I was even Left Eye for Halloween one year. A beautiful person who has a beautiful soul. I always get sad on the anniversary. Thanks for posting.

  • I identified so hard with left-eye, growing up. Still i’m convinced she’d be locked up by now if she wasnt dead. Rest in peace boderline genius!
