Quotables: Johnny Depp on Marriage

“I never found myself needing that piece of paper. Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don’t need somebody to say, okay you’re married… If Vanessa wanted to get hitched, why not… But the thing is, I’d be so scared of ruining her last name. She’s got such a good last name.”

– Johnny Depp, making the whole world swoon while discussing his lady, Vanessa Paradis.

Now there are a good amount of guys who will pull the “no, baby, you want to get engaged? What’s a ring, what’s a piece of paper when we’ve got love?”  And a lot of times, that kind of thinking reads more like “I like you and everything, but I’d like to keep my options open,” but sometimes it’s true, and I think this is the case with Johnny Depp.  I mean, it’s not like he’s playing the field, and he and Vanessa seem to have a nice little family, right?

Or maybe my mind is just twisted from growing up on Edward Scissorhands, Cry-Baby, and Benny and Joon and I am incapable of seeing Johnny Depp as anything other than a beautifully tragic hero.  That’s a strong possibility.

  • Every time I think I could not love him more, a gem like this pops up and I realize no relationship of mine will ever compare to the fantasy coupling I have with that man. Mmmm. Swoon.

  • I know this is kind of a neural misfire, but I wonder how much of his paranoia about coupling and permanence and names is tied to that awful “WINO” tattoo on his arm. (WINONA FOREVER, anybody? Remember?)

  • The excuse he gives, that of ruining her last name, is so, so ridiculous; she doesn’t have to change her surname, in some European countries women do not change their surname when they get married and more and more French women are deciding not to change it either. That’s a shit excuse. That said, I see his point of not needing someone to say, “oh you’re married”, I totally agree with that, but I’d get married if anything because as parents and partners you’ve got more rights if you’re married than if you’re not.

  • You’d be insulted because he hadn’t chosen the same route that DIDN’T work with the other girls?? This time it’s working: they seem happy and they have two beautiful children. And the last name thing? Tongue-in-cheek, morons.
