Sesame Street made a video that’s targeted at their black female audience called, “I Love My Hair” and not only is it just really adorable to watch (I’m almost 27 and still highly amused by puppets. That’s OK, right?), but I’m super crazy about the message of self-love.

I know that this is terrible of me to say . . . but her hair really does not look very good. While I agree that building a positive self-image is important, especially for children, it does not really prepare them for real life, when you should look your best.

One of my close girlfriends has spent a lot of money getting her straightened over the years. She decided to stop doing that a few years back and her hair is absolutely gorgeous! She’s naturally beautiful anyway and her mane is the envy of all her straight hair friends :)
I love this Sesame Street clip. My friend came to Canada from Jamaica when she was a little girl and she remebers being one of only a few dark skinned kids in her school. She was teased a lot for her hair and she says she remembers wanting straight hair so badly so she’d fit in more.
