A 9/11 Musical: Too Soon?

Have you guys heard about Clear Blue Tuesday? It’s a movie musical about 9/11, and it’s coming out on Friday in a few select theatres.  When I first heard about it, I was like “oh no,” because I thought it sounded like a musical about the actual events that took place on September 11, and there is just no way that’s going to be well received right now.  But it turns out it’s just about the effect it had on people’s lives in the years following the attacks, so that’s pretty whatever.

The thing is though, the trailer looks really, really shitty.  So now I’m like “oh no” again, because there are going to be people who refuse to hear a bad word about it, and even people who will support it regardless of its quality because of the subject matter.  And there are more people who are going to be so offended by it because of the subject matter.  Which means there’s going to be much ado about a stupid, shitty film just because some misguided director wanted to be edgy.  And that’s sad.

I think if anybody wants to be edgy and do a 9/11 musical, they should look at Osama: The Musical from Skins (do you guys watch Skins?  Let’s talk about Skins.)  In these kinds of situations, if you’re going to do something, you just have to commit.

What do you guys think?  Do you fall into the “this is an outrage” camp, the “I’m going to blindly support this movie” camp, or the “this trailer looked really shitty and I’d rather talk about Skins or anything else” camp?

  • my first thoughts were michelle from skins singing “then came the day osama blew us away…”
oh wow. i really miss skins season 1 and 2. the new seasons are awful.

  • I’m in the “I think that for the survivors of the victims a hundred years from now would be too soon” camp.

  • Kind of unrelated to the original topic of the post, this makes me so happy that you watch Skins. Please let this mean there will be more discussion on the upcoming Skins seasons in both the UK and US and the upcoming movie too?!

  • i don’t think it’s too soon. i mean hbo already did treme, and katrina was arguably far more of a fucking disaster than 911.

    • this comment is offensive. you shouldn’t compare disasters like this as “far more of a disaster” than the other.

maybe i’m extra sensitive as a new yorker who experienced the disaster first hand, with friends & family who were directly affected by 9/11 – but i know i’d never think to make this comment re: katrina/haiti/gulf oil either. (and you can’t use death toll numbers to compare after effects of these disasters.)

and i’m not trying to get on your case, but i think this attitude is important to note, since the question of whether it is “too soon” is being asked. the point is, it’s not too soon if it’s done with respect. but a lot of people find it hard to respect others’ situations unless they experienced it first hand, obviously.

      • my family moved back to new york just in time for 9/11 so why don’t we not play that game. i’m not trying to compare disasters, but treme is just another example of this type of thing happening.

      • uh relax. no one is “playing a game.” i was explaining why i was probably being sensitive – to your benefit. idiot.

  • this movie looked completely TERRIBLE, i mean god awful lol. but im not offended by it, why would you be? i mean, its sort of like a Reign Over Me type movie, i dont remember people shitting their pants over that one…

  • OMG I FAHKING LOVE SKINS!!! Sid and Cassie for ever! As far as this goes, trailer sucks but I will watch it on dvd cause nothing goes better with vodka and friends than a cheesy musical!

  • Well, I’ll react by reciting a joke from right afterwards.

The year is 2031. A man brings his son down to lower Manhattan, and to the site of ground zero, now a sacred monument. He says to his son, “Son, this is the site of two great buildings – the Twin Towers. But, 30 years ago, Moslems flew planes into them and brought them down”.

To which the son replied, “Dad, who were Moslems?”

  • I’m glad someone referenced Skins when talking about this!
Agree with the first comment, all I keep hearing is ‘And then came the day Osama blew us away’.

  • I was getting all ready to snottily type “well, it’s kind of already been done”, until I got to the Skins paragraph.
Well played, Emily. Well played. :P

  • ok, so im not an american so the 9/11 subjet is not a super sensitive one for me… but this movie seems like a joke, it actually looks like a comedy, plus i hate musicals, i thikn musicals are the perfect way to diminish anything they try to portray

  • I think something like this could actually be moving and thought provoking. This, however, looks campy. Never a good move when referring to a tragedy.
