Today's Evil Beet Gossip

Sorry, Edward Norton, No Avengers For You

Remember that time that Edward Norton played the Incredible Hulk? And remember how Edward Norton has a reputation for being an amazing actor? Well, you can write about that in a letter to Joss Whedon, because he went and kicked Ed out of his role in The Avengers.

The film, which will be released in the summer of 2012, is a big deal, just in case you haven’t heard.  First off, it’s being directed by Joss Whedon, so how could it not be incredible (Buffy 4-eva!)?  Secondly, there’s the cast:  Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Pine as Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow.  Then there was Edward Norton as the Incredible Hulk, but not so much anymore.  A guy from Marvel explained it like this:

“Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H., Chris E., Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

In other words, Edward Norton is being a little diva bitch about the whole thing.  Shame on Ed, I guess.  I’ve heard my comic geek friends talk for what seems like years about how hard they’re going to cream themselves over The Avengers, and now they’re all depressed that he’s gone.  Looks like that’s what you get for not embodying the same spirit as Robert Downey Jr.

  • Edward Norton was really looking forward to doing the Avengers, he was NOT being a little bitch about anything. Please get your facts straight.

    • Thanks for sharing, Shady. I can’t wait to see Feige’s response to this, if he even has one.

  • The issue goes further than Norton being a whiney bitch. He has major control issues and only signed on to the first hulk because he was told he’d be given some of that artistic control and then they ended up backing out on their promises which resulted in him proceeding to be a whiney bitch. I can understand wanting artistic control, but dude, your an actor in a comic book movie. Let’s be real for a second. Sucks though, he was very very good as the hulk!

  • come on! what is this?????
why you put your pictures right in the center of the fucking titles? at least choose a little smaller pic!!!!
    ohhhhhhhhhhhh

  • team edward. he is an amazing talent and this other guy is so obviously just trying to put it on ed instead of owning up to pissed off fans that he didn’t want to pay out the big bucks. loser

  • edward norton, not as great as he thinks he, and a bunch of dorks, think he is. i laughed when i heard this one. he’s probably punching himself somewhere.

to be honest, the only roles that i like him in are the ones when he plays a nebbish schmuck. i think it’s probably because he doesn’t have to dig too deep for that.

  • I adore Edward Norton and I’m glad he’s not going to be a part of this blockbuster cheese fest. I wish RDJ would also withdraw because Joss Whedon or not, The Avengers is going to be as bad as the Fantastic Four except Scar Jo will be sucking where Alba did.

  • How could you confuse the horrible actor chris evans with the charismatic puppy chris pine? If pine was captain america it might not suck so much.

  • Norton really helped give The Incredible Hulk some maturity while still remaining entertaining and not as overbearing as the first (recent) film.

Marvel has shown a lack of appreciation for actors in roles and think that their characters are enough to do the work. In the case of Don Cheadle, in Iron Man 2, I think the film suffered because of the change.

Norton may be a pain in the ass, from what “the word” is, but we can’t deny that he is a talented man and a good Bruce Banner.

  • Maybe they´re waiting to hire Mel Gibson for the rol, who better than him for a character whose anger turns him into a green racist all powerfull monster?

  • Wow that’s insane. Edward Norton is my all-time favorite actor. He’s always amazing and works really hard for all his roles. The man is a perfectionist and everyone I know thought he was perfect for The Incredible Hulk. I’m definitely not excited to see what sub-par actor takes his place. I don’t care for Robert Downey Jr. or Scarlett Johansson so I wont be seeing this movie anymore. Oh well.
