Dixie Carter passed away yesterday in Los Angeles at the age of 70. Dixie, who was best known for her role as the strong, smart and sassy Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women, was survived by her husband and two daughters.

The scene above from Designing Women, which is arguably the best moment from the entire series, is the quintessential example of what a fierce role model Dixie’s most famous character was. While Dixie was rather conservative in her private life, the character of Julia Sugarbaker was a huge influence on me (and many women I know) when I was growing up. She was truly, with the exception of maybe Roseanne and Murphy Brown, one of the only women I saw making intelligent commentary on TV when I was a kid and because of that I’ve always been quite fond of her.

You’ll be missed, Dixie.

I LOVED her sass…Oh Dixie…what a great beauty she was. but what the hell happened? there are no details of how she died. 70 isn’t really that old – does anyone know?

that’s the big mystery with this story. I hope the family will eventually share if she was sick or what she died from. seeing as she’s not that big a celeb, will any news outlet “do the dig” to find out if the family won’t reveal???

Great clip. That and her jury duty speech are two of my favorite DW moments. Actually they’re two of my favorite TV moments. RIP, Dixie.

What a disingenuous piece of shit you are! “A huge Influence”. Looking at your videos and seeing your pictures there is no way you were born before 1980. That being said, the show ended in 1993, which at most would have made you 13. Your are such a lying piece of shit!

If that were so, what went wrong? She was conservative and now you are such a proponent on this site of, same sex marriages, drug use, abortion, men sucking cock, women licking vagina,..etc..etc..etc.

You are always all over the map! One day you are this, one day you are that. Pick a fucking belief system and stick to it.

AND FUCK ALL OF YOU PUSSIES WHO ARE ABOUT TO CHIME IN AND TELL ME I’M WRONG!! GO SUCK YOUR MOTHERS COCKS !!!!

But if you pick one side/opinion/belief system, you lose half of your click-through rating. Doh.

Go awayyy. You need some serious anger management.

Go to CNN to bitch about your beliefs. No one cares here.

    • Señor Loco says:

I won’t be the one to tell you you’re wrong, as I couldn’t really care less about that with regards to this issue. However, if you would like the URL to a Canadian web site that offers prescription medication for bipolar disorder, please do feel free to drop me a line.

perhaps you’ve heard of this new little thing called, “re runs” or maybe “hulu” besides which why wouldn’t molls have been able to watch this show? you’re so stupid, i don’t even know why i’m commenting, but the fact that she was conservative in real life and played this feminist liberal character is maybe because she’s a fucking actress. was.

who gives a shit? People die every minute. I actually met her at a waffle house (no kidding). It was a long time ago and she was with Hal Holbrook. I spoke to him just to tell him I enjoyed his performances and was going to move along respectfully. She then stopped me and asked if I did not enjoy her work as well… that puts a person in an awkward situation which is what I’m sure she wanted, so I told her no and walked away. That was an asshole move done by an asshole. No one really knows these people, if you miss the character she played, fine, buy the episodes, but dont act like she was some great influence on you as a person, she was a dick like most actors.

  16. maybe i'm right says:

they literally don’t write speeches like that anymore. because they’re literally noted to death.

I always liked the part where she went to her tv sons college, and had sex with one his friend, she looked good in that t-shirt, she was a classy lady and will be remebered that way…She is with GOD now. Bless her and her family
