Lady Gaga is “Broke & Homeless”

g

Out of Australia comes this unexpected and totally over exaggerated story that Lady Gaga is penniless. The rumors stem from the following quote in The Daily Telegraph in which Gaga explains how she devotes all her time and resources to her career.

“I live right here in the moment. I live on stage. I don’t own a house, I don’t spend money on those things. I live out of a suitcase and I make music and art and I spend every dollar that I make on stage – that’s it.”

The article somehow spins that into the idea that she is “broke and homeless,” which is ridiculous, because she doesn’t say she’s broke– just that she doesn’t spend her money on anything but her performances. I also wouldn’t call not owning a house “homeless”, especially if you’re flying first class and sleeping in four star hotel rooms.

So, if she’s not buying million dollar mansions with her earnings, what’s her idea of extravagance? Apparently, it’s a bowl of pasta.

“I’m on a very strict healthy pop star diet. I don’t eat bread, just vegetables and salad and fish. Eating like that is much better for me anyway but on Sundays I sometimes eat pasta.”

Pasta fetish, huh? It’s always the outrageous, extroverted ones who have the tamest cravings.

  • The Daily Telgraph had some fun with the semantics game and Lady Gaga provided them with enough fuel to spin the story as they did.
“Homeless” can be used to correctly describe a person without a permanent home, regardless of financial means. And “broke” can be correctly used to describe someone with no money on hand or readily accessible, even if that “broke” person has a net worth of $10M.
Lady Gaga intimates that she doesn’t have a permanent home and has no money because she spends all of the money that she makes on her stage shows.
I don’t know enough about Australian vernacular and culture to know if “homeless” and “broke” have similarly crummy, even dire, connotations in ‘Aussie speak’ as they do in America; but I suspect that they do.

  • when it comes down to it, whos business is it? Hers and hers only. No one wants to see a true artist struggle but she truely dedicates all her money to either charities or into her show. She is a true artist that we have for so long needed…She dedicates so much to her fans and she deserves so much back…Not to open a paper and read crap like that..

  • i agree with skeelo. lady gaga who could probably give acrap about being labeled homeless and poor. but if she does she might wanna choose better wording

  • Australian gossip mag’s and gossip writers are amongst the most stupid in the world, in some cases are even more slanderous than the English press. Spin isn’t quite adequate to describe the Australian gossip press, the ppl who create these stories are more bitchy than a room full of drunken transvestites. Im Australian and gave up buying Australian publications years ago, and prefer to go on line to get celebrity and other news.
