John Mayer’s Apology Means Nothing Until I Hear It Sans Subtle Jazz Drumming

John Mayer had a lot of explaining to do yesterday after that Playboy interview was released. Yes, he took to his Twitter and addressed his use of the n-word, but he waited until his show last night in Nashville to apologize for his comments about ex-girlfriend’s Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson.

Mayer clearly sites his own arrogance and desire to appear clever and a step ahead of the media as the sources of his big mouth. Only problem? Why is his band jamming quietly behind him while he’s apologizing? I realize that he’s at a concert, but this is not standard concert patter. He’s not dishing with the audience about why he wrote “Daughters”, he’s apologizing for using racial slurs and putting two of his ex-girlfriends on blast. The subtle guitar strumming is completely inappropriate and distracting from his message, which would be paramount given the circumstances, no?

  • You’re exactly right. He should not have aplogized with instrumentation. It makes it seem trite, even if he is sincere. I want to believe he really is sorry, but we’ll see…

  • He is making it hard for me to continue to like him….John John John. You are 32. Stop thinking you are smarter than everyone else.

  • You criticize him for using the word but you’ll post songs that use it repeatedly? I assume when you sing along with these songs you don’t say that one word? Right.

      • Come on now, 1998 was a damn great year for me. I graduated from college, moved into my first apartment without roommates, and got my first corporate job!

        Don’t be knocking 98, bitch. Just kidding, you’re not a bitch. but don’t knock 98. :-)

      • So you’ve finally responded to me calling you out on your posts and that’s the best you can do? A personal insult? Why not just call me a retard and show your true colors?

Look, many black people do not like to hear that word ever. Many don’t like to hear it in songs. Many of us don’t think it’s great watching other black people make money using that word and promoting negative stereotypes of us by playing to a mostly white audience.

You don’t want to hear Mayer say it when making a point about its use but you will happily say it when you sing along to a song by a guy who sings about many of the negative stereotypes you claim to be against? Hypocrite much?

One serious question for you. Do you honestly believe that there are not a lot of black people that would be offended by the use of the N word in songs like the last one you posted? If so, you can tell this kid to go back to 1998 too:

      • Jonathan McCoy, you are a very special young man. Wow, his speech was phenomenal. He spoke the truth from his heart. My favorite line in his song: “sing us a song that doesn’t dishonor the mothers who bore us.” This from the mouth of a babe. Go little man, go!

      • “And black people calling women bitches…”

Is this question for Molls or me? I’m a black man who does not like “artists” who call women bitches and use the N word, Molls is a white woman who does.

So, I’m a bit confused if you were responding to me, unless I’m somehow responsible for other black people’s actions.

  • Based on comments he made about masturbating a few weeks ago, maybe he was resisting that particular urge when he ‘apologized’ – if that’s the case, I’ll take the guitar strumming instead.

  • The guy’s not sorry he said it. He thought he was being bad-ass and ever so edgy. He’s sorry now because of the backlash. It’s like when Tiger Woods was caught cheating. He wasn’t sorry he did it; he was sorry he got caught.

The cheezy jazz in the background and his tone of voice just try to make it sound like he’s attempting to be deep and soulful when it’s clear he’s just a douchy guy with a moderatly decent voice that women in their 30’s like to listen to.

  • I seriously think this guy has some type of mental illness or is an addict and is constantly high. His behavior is truly bizarre.

  • At the risk of being the unpopular kid here, I don’t think he needed to make a public apology for what he said about his ex girlfriends. So I don’t know why everyone is getting on their high horse about this apology. Did he hurt your feelings? No, so he doesn’t owe you an apology so it doesn’t matter that this apology didn’t meet your expectations. Get over it. The people he might want to apologise to is J Aniston and Simpson.

John Mayer is the male version of Miley Cyrus…it doesn’t matter what they do or what they say, majority of media just loves to hate on them.
