Gaboure Sidibe, star of Precious, visits the Duracell Lab in Times Square for a little photo shoot.

I have to say, I finally managed to download a real torrent of this movie (legal note: I’M TOTALLY KIDDING!), and, while I wasn’t like, “OMG this is the greatest film of all time,” I was completely and totally blown away by the caliber of the acting. Everyone was absolutely brilliant, up to and including Mariah Carey. I smell lots and lots of Oscars.

  • i saw the trailer for this months ago and the trailer made me cry!!!
im dying to see this movie, but i want to watch it alone, at home, where im free to sob like a baby without anyone watching me.
    the movie looks simply amazing.

    • thank you for finally saying that!! homegirl is morbidly obese and will only get roles for morbidly obese ugly black women. and before you all think i’m racist, i’m black.

  • this movie is typical of the black movies repeatedly picked by the academy. they prominently feature lighter-skinned blacks in the roles as teacher, counselor, friend, or all-around “good” person and they consistently feature darker-skinned blacks in roles that represent the “bad” part of society, like prostitutes, thieves, abusers, pimps, etc. it’s sick and twisted and i’m sick of hollywood bastardizing african-americans in film and blacks are just as much to blame as WASPy film producers because they buy in to all this crap.

anyone taken a class in african-american history or culture? anyone even know what colorism is or how it has undermined and continues to undermine the black community from within? wake up people! this movie is a caricature of itself. i hate to be a debbie-downer. and i’m sure the acting is great, but what about the larger message we’re sending to children, adolescents, and adults alike, whether overtly or subconsciously about which types of blacks are accepted and which types aren’t??

    • Weird. Because I saw this movie and the protaganist…the gir you root for and the girl you have affection for is the dark, overweight black girl.
The teacher is fine, as teachers are. The social worker comes off as little more than inept and tiered of her job. But all the stregnth and all the growth comes from the main character. Who, is darker than the antagonist…her mother.

Just sayin. You might want to actually watch the movie before you write a fucking thesis about it.

  • Laugh if you want people, but Manatee’s are endangered and will die if left out of the water too long.

  • Im sure she is a nice person, now that she is well known someone please help her – she is a walking time bomb, glamorizing it is only killing more overweight americans. The obesity problem is SERIOUS.

For the love of god someone use this opportunity to save her life!
