MTv Pulls its Punches: Is Snooki Blame Free by Virtue of Her Vagina?

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Have any of you been watching this protein-shake & Jager bomb fueled delightful little train wreck? I spent about 3 hours last weekend catching up on the activities of all the little guidos & guidettes (their terms, not mine). It’s a cocktail of fake boobs, hair gel, tanning beds, cockblocks, and sluttiness. In short, I can’t take my eyes off it. These may be some of the trashiest people I’ve ever seen on television– and I’ve watched my fair share of Bridezilla episodes.

During last week’s episode, MTv showed a preview of one of the guidettes, 21 year old Snooki, getting socked in the face by 24 year old school teacher Lou Ferro. The network originally played the incident up, posting a video entitled “Snooki Gets Punched,” which is in extremely poor taste… so it fit perfectly with the theme of the show and everyone on it. The video went viral, and after a big internet backlash, they’ve since pulled the video, cut the footage from the show, and issued a statement:

“What happened to “Snooki” was a crime and obviously extremely disturbing. After hearing from our viewers, further consulting with experts on the issue of violence, and seeing how the video footage has been taken out of context to not show the severity of this act or the resulting consequences, MTV has decided not to air “Snooki” being physically punched in next week’s episode.”

The network said the episode will still make clear what events happened that night and plans to air a message at the end of the show listing available resources for those in abusive relationships.

Yes, because nothing will make a woman in an abusive relationship finally seek help like  seeing some ho bag cockblocker getting punched in the face in a night club. This wasn’t domestic violence. This was a club fight between douche bags.

And this is where I throw gas on the fire.:

The idea that women are not responsible for their own actions, simply because they are women, bothers me. I’m not necessarily of the mind that you should never, ever hit a woman. If someone physically attacks you, you have the right to defend yourself, regardless of what’s between your legs. Now, as far as I know, Snooki didn’t physically attack the guy, so he had no right to physically retaliate, and regardless of what she said, I think it’s cowardly and douchey to suckerpunch someone that much smaller than you in the face, whether they’re male or female. Don’t misunderstand me on that point.

But Snooki is a bitch. She was yelling at some random guy in a club, with her face and her hands inches from his face, yelling god know’s what. It’s incredibly stupid to bitch out some random, drunk, pride-fueled douche in a club on the Jersey shore. No one with a penis would ever do it unless they wanted to get punched, so does having a vagina give Snooki an automatic get out of jail free card?

Like I said, I’ve watched episodes of the show in the past, and the guys from this show have punched out random guys in night clubs for talking much less trash than Snooki does, and everyone seems to think that’s okay, because it was a guy punching a guy.

If Snooki had been a man, wouldn’t this just have been another guido club fight? What if she had been a very small man? Is our aversion to this about size, or about gender? And is she entirely innocent in this, or should she take some responsibility for her role in this incident?

I’m putting on my asbestos underwear now. Flame away.

  • You’re forgetting MTV made a huge deal about Danny from Austin’s show getting his ass kicked, and another cast member from another Real World (or maybe it was Austin, too?) had to return to the filming location to go to court for an assault case.

    • That was actually Bri (the white-looking black stripper) from LA who had to go back home to face the music for assaulting her boyfriend.
In Snooki’s case, however, it reinforces my husband’s saying that you should “never fuck with strangers, cause you don’t know who you’re talking shit at.”
Kelly, point agreed. Regardless of gender, you talk enough smack and act out enough it is entirely possible to bring the fire on yourself.

  • I agree, too. She’s a bitch and probably deserved to be punched. Not that hitting a chick is right and seriously, a real man probably wouldn’t ever hit a chick. But of all the chicks out there, she definitely deserves it the most.
I LOVE this show. I hate myself for watching it, but I love it. It’s an absolute train wreck, but the comedic value of it is unsurpassed. It’s one of the few “reality” shows that I can stand, and it makes me feel good about myself every time I watch it.

  • I agree with you. Unless it’s a child, I say size doesn’t matter. Small people shouldn’t be given a pass just because they are small.

  • I disagree! The only time when a fight might be unproblematic to me – even, and especially if the parties were being belligerent or confrontational – is when THEY ARE PHYSICALLY EVENLY MATCHED.
Men, women, as long as there is not great physical dichotomy, then you reap what you sow. But did you see that? He’s huge! She may be annoying, but she’s like 4 feet tall! He could have really hurt her, and it looks like he did. The physical difference is almost like between an adult and a child – don’t hit people who are physically weaker than you (well, just don’t hit people). You could seriously injure them, and unless they have iron knuckles, they shouldn’t be able to do *too* much damage. Besides, that wasn’t self-defense.
It has nothing to do with sex, but with sheer force. She looked like she was in serious pain. She’s ridiculous, but no one deserves that. Next time just walk away.

    • I know..

like I would say my boyfriend and I are both fairly small. However, small for ME means that I am 5’4″ and 110 lbs, small for him means that he is 5’9″ and like 160. Although we both don’t look that big, he still has like 50 lbs on me

    • By your reasoning, if I happen to be a puny guy, I can get in people’s faces and get a bye just by virtue of being smaller and weaker? Sorry. She was obviously counting on there being no consequences because of her size and gender. She got what she deserved. Her generation wants instant gratification and no responsibility. Too bad for her that reality doesn’t work like that.

      • It’s our sister site, but they are two DIFFERENT sites. A topic is not off-limits to them if we write about it over here, and vice versa. Furthermore, it’s highly likely that the people Sasha hires to write for her might have similar tastes and would occasionally choose the same topic or take a similar stance on something.
But I looked at the article on Zelda Lilly, and it’s fairly different, in verbiage if not in theme. I wrote this article myself, and spent a fair amount of time on it. Maybe you’re not a writer and can’t understand this, but it’s insulting for you to look at another post on a different site and claim that it’s the same article, because it’s not.

  • She may be annoying but the reason she got punched was not a good one. The guy was cut-off by the bartender for being too intoxicated. He then stole her drink and downed it. She confronted him about taking her drink and he responded by punching her in the face. You can read about it here if you care: http://www.philly.com/philly/news/homepage/53919302.html?cmpid=15585797

I don’t think women should get an automatic pass either, but this is not a situation where her verbal attack deserved a physical retaliation.

    • yea i was going to say something about that. she wasn’t just randomly going off on some guy, he stole her drink she made a point to call him out on it.

  • Totes agree with you Kelly.
I’ve been out before, everyone having a nice time and quite a lot to drink, and some complete nutter starts on one of my male friends. She goes completely mental – starts poking and slapping at him, screaming obscenities the whole time. The bouncer comes over, asks whats going on. She says “this guy attacked me!” etc. etc.
The bouncer looked at her, picked her up, and chucked her out.

Later I asked my mate why he had just stood there and took it – he said he knew that if he touched her, even to push her away he’d have been in a ton of shit, no-matter what she’d done to him.

  • The loop of her at the end getting punched is fucking hilarious. Do you know how many loud mouthed, fugly, bar bitches I have wanted to do that to? That dude is my fucking hero.

    • Well of course, we knew all along that you couldn’t pick up a woman in a bar if your life depended on it, loser.

  • Okay I am sooo annoyed because I REALLY REALLY want to watch this show but because I’m in Europe I can’t watch it on mtv.com :'( bitches.

  • Are you insane? I do not agree with you one bit and anyone else who does on here seriously should get their head checked especially if they are females. It is never ok for a man to hit a woman no matter what the circumstances, nor is it ok for a woman to put there hands on a man you just shouldn’t put your hands on people. I read the news story and guess what, if someone would have taken my drink I would have had some words for them. We shall see if this holds true should you ever get punched in the face by a meathead 3x your size. What part of the world are you guys from? If this happened in Texas 6 guys would have jumped on this idiot and given him what he deserved. To make matters worse he’s a teacher is this the type of person you want around your children? No thanks! So for all the morons in here who say she had it coming so do you idiots for thinking that.

    • What part of Texas are you from? I have witnessed many a Cow-Cunt get smacked in Texas. As far as being a teacher, if he has a twelve year old skank yelling at him in class because the kid thinks he stole her whiskey sour your kid should get smacked also.

      • Shut ur dry ignorant ass up.I hope u still say tht shit when ur child gets punched in the face by sum1 5x bigger than them. Or ur mother or grandmother cause old ppl tlk jus as much shit as her & even more.u asshole.& when u get old and want to express ur opion I hope sum1 beat the shit outta u.literaly.THINK B4 U TALK. I LOVE SNOOKI SHES MY BITCH!!!

  • The use of violence to solve a dispute is perfectly acceptable if the benefits or satisfaction resulting from the act outweighs its consequences. The fact that Snickers is sporting a vadge simply adds to the consequences side of the equation. In this specific case you’d have to balance the satisfaction of smoking an annoying little guidette in the grill and watching her sprawled out on the barroom floor against the $500 fine, 6 mo suspended sentence, lawyers fees, and the scorn of employers and others who are offended by a man beating a woman. In this case, I’d say it wasn’t worth it.

Another case would be when Internet cockroach Perez Hilton got punched in the eye by that dude from the Black Eyed Peas. In that situation, the puncher got the satisfaction of hammering one of the world’s scummiest losers, he received kudos and adulation from thousands for making the world a better place and all it cost him was a $500 fine. In that case, it was definitely the right solution to the problem.

So if it wasn’t for the scorn you get for pounding a woman, knocking Snookums out might have been an option. In the end it was not. And that would be because she has a vagina.

  • Eventus stultorum magister. Consequence is the instructor of fools.

When people’s actions are free from consequence, chaos reins. Snooki seemed to think she could bitch out this dude (even if he deserved it) with no consequences. She was wrong. Hopefully she and others like her learn a lesson from it.

The risk of getting punched in the face regardless of your gender brings civility to the world. The dude that hit her did us all a service (even if the behavior was wrong.)

  • These stupid “reality shows” are promoting misogyny. The current theme seems to be that if a woman “bitches” at a man she somehow deserves a concussion for it. Like WTF? This is exactly what people said about Rihanna and Chris Brown, claiming she deserved it because she “bitched” at him about cheating on her. Rihanna gets her face bashed in, Chris goes waterskiing without a scratch and young males everywhere think Chris is a “great” guy. Frightening.

    • When woman act like ladies they are generally treated like ladies. When they don’t, they run the risk of getting smacked by someone. Right or wrong, fair or unfair is beside the point. You do not get in a strangers face IN A BAR and run your mouth. You never know who you are dealing with. Both parties were stupid and wrong and they both deserve what they got.

    • The Rihanna / Chris Brown situation is a little different. Whether a fight is “right’ or “wrong” seems to depend on the fighters’ relationships to one another. This includes their genders, sizes, ages and abilities, but also whether they are related or involved. For example, it’d never be okay for a random stranger to hold a young woman down and rub leaves in her face, but if the two are brother and sister, it’s okay (if annoying).

In the case of Riri and Chris Brown, it wasn’t a random suckerpunch in a bar between two people who didn’t know each other and were acting like turds. It was a beat down between a man and a woman who had been in a relationship for some time. That qualifies it as domestic violence, which is a different situation and should be held to different standards.

  • really? really??? i sure hope you’re getting paid extra to write these ridiculous reviews of trashy reality tv. god, this site has gone downhill.

    • That’s kind of funny- In case you haven’t noticed, you are reading a gossip blog. The entire purpose of the blog is to write updates about trashy people doing trashy things, which you (and I) must love, or else we wouldn’t have found ourselves here. It’s interesting that the point at which you find it to be going downhill is when there is an attempt to inject some discussion of ethics and gender roles into this trashiness. I for one appreciate intelligent writing as one way that Evil Beet stays above most other gossip blogs and magazines etc. I love trashy gossip as much as the next person here, but there’s more to it on this blog.

  • Boooo. Whether Snooki was being bitchy or not is irrelevant. There’s a huge difference between being verbally abusive and being physically abusive. This guy seriously crossed the line and I think it’s messed up to act like Snooki should share the blame for that physical act of violence. Maybe she is a bitch but she didn’t physically assault him, and I think it’s really unfair to suggest that she ‘had it coming’ or ‘put herself in the wrong situation,’ etc. The classiest thing for that guy to do would have been to walk away and let her look like a moron on national t.v. The unclassy thing would have been to bitch at her back and then walk away. The illegal, woman-beating thing to do was to punch her in the face. I hope he gets the book thrown at him and loses his teaching job. Call me old-fashioned but considering that most men have much greater upper-body strength than women, I think it is absolutely unacceptable for a man to hit a woman when she was not being physically aggressive. People talk shit in bars all the time. It doesn’t make it right, but it is certainly no excuse to become violent.

    • A new phenomena in jurisprudence, “The Vagina Defense”. No matter how much a woman is responsible for inciting, provoking, or exacerbating a situation, and whose actions are inextricably linked to the cause and reason by the man for his reaction to said behavior is to say “your honor, I am the victim because I have a vagina”, “my attorney has some 5 by 10 glossy’s to submit as evidence”.

“I was speeding officer, but you can’t ticket me because I have a twat”
“I know my rent is late, but you can’t evict me because I’m having my period”
“I know my checked bounced, but I have a pussy so it’s OK”
“That is an ounce of coke Officer, but it is partially up my cunt so it is exempt”

CHAZ BONO, I’ll trade my dick for that pussy you don’t want.

  • Okay. Gross. I generally have disdain for the whole ‘guido’ and ‘guidette’ culture, and I have no doubt that this ‘Snookie’ is a reprehensible dirtbag most of the time (I don’t know, I’ve never seen the show). However, I don’t feel she’s ‘at fault’ here at all. From what I understand, a drunk asshole stole her drink (which she probably had to pay money for), and instead of just being baffled and meekly complaining after the fact, she confronted him. Totally reasonable. What’s not reasonable (for a multitude of reasons) is for him to punch her in the face. And the fact that a lot of people have an attitude of, “Well, she shouldn’t have put herself in that situation”? Wow. That is akin to saying that a rape victim is at fault because she had the nerve to wear a short skirt in public, because, clearly, she should have ‘known what was going to happen’.

    This is sickening.
    Oh, and Right Hook?
“When woman act like ladies they are generally treated like ladies.”
That is one of the most misogynistic things I’ve had the displeasure to read in a while. So if a woman doesn’t follow externally invented and enforced gender roles, she deserves to be treated badly?

  • The circumstances were very different from what you based this article on. The gym teacher had been cut off because he was too drunk, someone ordered Snooki a drink, and the gym teacher reached over and took her drink. Snooki, who had been drinking was upset and talking to him, not yelling at him but understandably was not happy with him when he attacked her. At no time should a man hit a woman, unless the man is afraid for his physical safety or life. Size and strength make a huge difference and can be dangerous and even fatal to a woman. It turns out this gym teacher fights in cage matches, it very well trained and is very strong. I won’t accuse him of steroid use but it’s been known to be used in the sport. He could have killed her.

  • This whole “vagina defense” thing is simply a sad excuse for someone to voice an ignorant, partial viewpoint. Women dont have a free pass because of the shape of their genitalia, but because anyone with half a brain knows THERES MORE TO THE SEXES THAN THE ORGANS THEMSELVES which generate hormones that change the baseline of strength for the sexes PARTICULARILY IN THE UPPER ARMS. Which most of you probably dont know, including the author, ARE USED FOR PUNCHING hitting ect. Its fun to ride a highhorse, but you should notice when youre tredding in 3 feet of s***, oops, I mean your natural thought process. The woman who wrote this article is not only pathetically ignorant, but im ashamed that her mind has such an immature stance on womanhood. I hope some day this woman, or girl rather, can learn to respect herself, and her fellow women. Who deserve more than to be shut up with a fist.

  • I will never read this site again. I could elaborate on the ridiculousness of an opinion that some chick calling out a guy at the bar deserves a sucker punch at the bar, but someone who would even write this isn’t worth my time.

  • Snooki is a Borderline Psychotic Personality Disordered “dirty little gerbil”. You have two seasons to refer to & analyze.

    1) She provoked a response by being verbally abusive.

    2) Whatever she said was sufficiently provocative to result in a stranger (a schoolteacher to boot) punching her in the face.

    3) She seems to have no problems being both verbally abusive & physically abusive with her room mates on a weekly basis.

A guy, a total stranger becoming negatively reactive to verbal abuse is ABSOLUTELY acceptable. The days of chivalry are long gone ladies, yap like an animal & you should expect to be put in your place.

    I applaud the guy.
