Morrissey Returns to Stage, Leaves Minutes Later

When Morrissey isn’t occupied collapsing on stage, he’s running off stage like he did this weekend.

Morrissey was in the middle of his second song during a Liverpool concert — he just started up his tour again after being ill — when a concertgoer threw a beer bottle at the singer’s head.  I’ve read some articles that say it was a plastic bottle that was tossed.  I don’t know if the material matters, Morrisey was fine, but immediately stopped singing, said “goodbye” and walked off the stage.

Now, the bottle thrower is a douchebag, but what about the thousands of other Morrissey fans that were there to see him?  Stood up. Paying the price for one idiot.  Despite audience chants, Morrissey wouldn’t return to the stage.  It reminds me of something that Tori Amos said in an interview a few years ago.  She was asked about cancelling concerts, she has cancelled very few in her career, and her reasoning was because “people have changed their lives to be there.”  So true!  I hope M wasn’t injured — reports say he’s just fine — and I hope his fans get a refund!

  • I don’t blame him a bit. He’s there to perform, not dodge bottles being thrown at him. Unfortunately, sometimes one idiot will throw a bottle and other idiots will follow suit.

I’ve seen him live, he puts on a really good show. Concertgoers take note: if you behave like an ass and throw something at the person you’ve paid good money to see, there’s a pretty good chance they’ll walk off stage. Hopefully, those around you will kick your ass.

  • why would you stay up there when somebody just hit you in the head with a bottle? glass or plastic, it had liquid in it and it went everywhere. you could see it. what a fucking moron. I agree with Bee, I hope they got their ass kicked by others in the crowd.

  • Who the fuck changes their lives to be at a fucken concert. Tori seems a bit out of touch or just plain retarded. You make plans to go to a concert and if it get canceled, you make other plans.

    • What? No band I like plays in my town. They usually play in another town three hours away so that means train + ticket + hotel. I changed my life twice to go see Muse, and I don’t regret it, but it took weeks to sort everything out, and I ended up sleeping at the airport. So don’t be so stupid, not all of us are lucky enough to have our favourite bands playing in our town.

  • Morrissey refunded concert goers the price of their tickets, so no one lost money–what they did lose was a chance to enjoy a performance because of one idiot.

And yes, if some blathering idiot throws a bottle of liquid and hits a performer in the face–I hope the performer walks off stage. That bottle could be filled with any number of substances, ranging from urine to drugs which may or may not be liquid soluble.

This will sound awful–it’s my sincere hope that the concert goers right near the person who threw the bottle on stage pummled that person appropriately. The level of entitlement we have these days is pretty appalling.

  • Morrissey seems like quite the drama queen and pussy based on other accounts I’ve heard. At the last Coachella concert in California, I hear he walked off stage, basically quitting before he started, because as a vegan he couldn’t tolerate the smell of cooked meat coming from all of the people barbecuing. I mean Jesus H.! Many a performer has had bottles and such thrown at them and they didn’t cancel the entire show. He’s been a high maintenance, difficult bitch for years who apparently has never quite come to understand what a privilege it is to make so much money, and have so much fame and so many fans; but that it comes with a price. If I was his agent, I’d tell him, “Suck it up, you whiny douchebag, and get your ass back out on that stage! These people out there are paying your bills!”

  • one time, long ago, as a young girl, i went to an oasis concert with my mom and my best friend. people down below started throwing coins at them during the first song. they stopped playing, yelled “we’re not f*cking monkeys in a f*cking zoo!” and never returned.
obviously, as young girls we were devasted. we got a refund and of course, i’m totally over it as i am Oasis.
But that really sucked at the time. Not to mention, everyone who know we were going totally made fun of what happened, when before they saying “you get to see Oasis? Lucky!”
So basically, I feel sorry for everyone else at that Morrissey concert – some may have seen him MANY times before like some of my friends, but other might have been there for the first time and are totally devasted right about now.

  • I agree about not have douchebags throw bottles… but Morrissey has pulled this stunt for his own douchebaggery before.

At UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion around ’92, Morrissey tells folks to move up towards the stage. A bit of shoving goes on and a couple of people are hurt. He leaves the stage and people start clearing up his mess. 30 minutes after things are cleaned up, we are told the concert is over.

While I love The Smiths and Morrissey’s earlier stuff, I vowed never to go to that idiot’s concerts.
