DJ AM Recovery Series to Air Monday

I’m very pleased that MTV has opted to air Gone Too Far, the intervention/recovery series DJ AM filmed with them prior to his relapse and subsequent overdose. I never really doubted that they’d air it — there’s way too much money to be made — but they are doing so with the support of Adam’s family. “It is our hope through airing this show that people will get to see the side of Adam that we knew and loved, not just the celebrity DJ, but the honest and caring person who gave so much of himself to help others,” the family said in a statement earlier this month. “The decision to air the show has been difficult, but we do this with the profound belief that it will inspire others to seek help.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. I’m really, really glad that people will get to see Adam for who he was — someone very aware of the perils and powers of addiction and someone who dedicated his life to his own recovery and to the recovery of others. I hope this show will help people get clean and sober and help people stay clean and sober, because that’s what Adam was about.

MTV has a trailer you can watch here. The show premieres October 12. (Side note: I think the voiceover is Mandy Moore.)

  • I think it’s nice, no great that the family decided to move beyond DJ AM’s death and make this last project his memorial and allow him to continue to reach out and help as he did in his life. Even if it turns one life around the show will be a way for the family and his friends to remember the good he did in his life for so many others. I think he would be proud of them for being so brave to keep his passion project alive.

  • AM had been sober for something like seven years (or more) when he made this series (we think). Working with addicts is hard and can even drive a trained therapist “to drink”. I hope this show had nothing to do with his relapse and subsequent death. I never followed the guy much, but his story has touched me more than other celebrity deaths. I think it is because he seemed to be trying to stay sober. But who knows what daemons lurk under the surface or what secrets he hid. Thanks for posting the link to the preview. Hopefully MTV Canada will air the show.

  • Re: “I hope this show will help people get clean and sober and help people stay clean and sober, because that’s what Adam was about.” You’re kidding, right? Didn’t the medical examiner determine that he died due to “acute intoxication”?

  • It’s really awful he died. However, since he did do the show before he died and now they’re going to air it, I think it’s going to be even more effective. Recovering from addiction is never really over, and the fact that he ultimately lost his battle will have a tone to the show that will truly showcase how vulnerale any addict can be. I hope that it will help people who not only are currently struggling with drugs, but serve as a reminder to people who have been sober for years that it’s easy to slip up. His family and MTV completely made the right decision to air his show.

    • Obviously he did the show BEFORE he died…but, who really cares, I didn’t even know who he was UNTIL he died, and yet I’m sure this is going to help others get sober when nothing else will…phs!
