Mickey Rourke Has GLAAD Up In Arms Over FaggotGate ’09

Mickey Rourke got pissed at a photog leaving Hollywood club Hyde the other night and pulled a Perez Hilton. Mickey called the guy a faggot, a completely gross word that it’s hard to believe a man who dresses as flamboyantly as he does would use, and now, of course, GLAAD is super pissed and calling him out for it.

The president of GLAAD personally issued this statement to the press calling Rourke out on his bad behavior, calling him “painfully ignorant”, amongst other things:

“This is a slur that, regardless of what Mickey Rourke has convinced himself that it means, is often the last word that gay people, and gay youth in particular, hear before they’re bullied, harassed or assaulted.  Rourke is showing himself to be painfully ignorant of how this vulgar, abusive slur feeds a climate of anti-gay hatred, intolerance and violence.  Rourke either needs to figure this out, or media needs to stop giving him a platform for promoting these kinds of slurs.” -Jarrett Barrios

Well, it’s officially t-minus two hours until Rourke drops some sort of official apology on us. He chalked up his actions last night by saying that he didn’t mean any offense to the gay community and that it was a term passed around on his high school football team with abandon, but I think we all know that that’s just another way of saying “Sorry if you were offended, but get over it.” Ohhhh, Mickey. America was loving you so hard.

  • this might sound strange, and i’m sure people will not agree with me and be quick to point out all the reasons that i’m wrong and try to help me understand how my insensitivity hurt others, etc… but i don’t associate the word faggot with gay people. if i were to use that word as an insult, to me, it is equivalent to the insults asshole or jerk. language changes over time, and the connotations of words change.

    • I used to feel the same way, but when that word DOES mean something absolutely terrible to a lot of people, so what’s the harm in dropping it from your vocabulary? It’s like some white person using the n-word, but saying that it means something positive for them; they don’t see the harm in it, but other people will take it in a much more adverse way.

If it’s the equivalent of asshole or jerk (or asshole jerk, but not used as a verb) then maybe trying to use asshole or jerk instead of faggot would be a better move.

      • I feel ignorant asking this, but IS the word faggot a word that is without questions absolutely terrible to all gay people (when said by a straight person)? Can gay people call each other faggot like black people can call each other the n word? Is the word fag also offensive? Is it really equivalent to the n word? I’m seriously wondering!?

      • It is purely up to personal preference….I hate the word and would be very offended if anyone called me that; including another gay person. It is a word used to insight anger and violence and should no longer be used!!!

  • Oh shut up. Are you just trying to help a brother out and make Mickey Rourke look better?? Cuz it’s working.

Anyway, I don’t doubt for a second that Mickey Rourke didn’t mean it as a denigration of gay people; it’s just another bad word. I believe he’s sincere in his explanation. Should he have said it? Probably not, but this is way blown out of proportion.

  • Get Real….stop it….hahahaha.

I agree faggot does not mean gay—

N-word–shouldn’t be such a big deal if blacks say it—

Whatever happened to “sticks and stones and can break my bones, but names can never hurt me?” Are we all such a bunch of big pussies that no one can take name calling ***shit***I wish people would just knock it off…if I really I hate you I will beat the living shit out of you.

  • I wonder when the word “faggot” go from meaning “a bundle of sticks” to being a vulgar, defamatory slur. Probably around the time that the word “gay” went from meaning “happy” to homosexual. I wish these words still meant what they did. I rather liked them. I don’t think people would mind so much if we were going around calling everybody happy little bundles of sticks.

  • What I want to know is what made him wear that freaking shirt?? I can just see him in the mirror before going out wondering at exactly what button he should leave his shirt open to. Nice matching orange belt. This guy is a mess.
