I think it was ever since she did the first Bridget Jones that I’ve thought she was too skinny. I think she said she felt very uncomfortable at that weight and it seems to have skewed her image of a healthy weight. Way too skinny and way too much Botox! Eat a hamburger Renee, it may even make me like you more…

    • Think Straight says:

I agree! After the first Bridget Jones, she began on a trend towards extreme thinness. Since she naturally has “marshmallow cheeks” even when she is extremely thin, when she’s a normal (some would say, slender, since the camera adds 10 pounds) weight, as she was for the B.J. movies, she looks plump.

But at this weight, she looks like a scarecrow in a dress. For some reason, nowadays middle-aged dames seem to try to fend off their fears of aging with extreme leanness and muscularity (Demi Moore notwithstanding) e.g. Muscles Madonna, Kelly “Ripped” Ripa, Starvin’ Sarah Jessica Parker, Ravenous Rachel Zoe, Courtney Love (okay, just skin and bones, no muscles). While the guys get pudgier e.g. Mel Gibson, John Travolta, Russel Crowe, Alec Baldwin, etc.

The day that an actress can let herself go to the extent that Jack Nicholson has and still be a viable lead in a romantic comedy will be the day that men and women have parity in Hollywood. Especially if she gets a younger, handsome man, say, the male equivalent of Helen Hunt in As Good As It Gets.

I nominate Kathleen Turner, although I think she’s aging more attractively than Nicholson.

They can make her face fat with prosthetics as well. It’s good she’s going about it the healthy way this time :)

  3. MymaJane says:

Her face looks the same to me either way. But I can understand why she doesn’t want to pack on the pounds. It can’ be good for the body to go up and down like that. I know that she is skinny, but she’s an avid runner and to me she has a beautiful, toned physique.

    • Alzaetia says:

Beautiful? Really? Do you see how her shoulders are practically pointy? That is not healthy.
It kinda looks like she’s about to turn into a dragon and sprout talons from her shoulders or something.

  4. rarerabbit says:

Somehow the lemon-sucking effect is lessened when she’s a little rounder in the face, I much prefer the softer Renee.

  5. Dee says:

Losing and gaining weight as often as she does isn’t healthy, but what’s even more appalling than reporters’ lack of consideration of this is the repeated idea that she would be worried about getting softer only because of her rumored boyfriend. Not all women tie their self-worth to men, and it’s offensive to me that you, especially as a woman, would imply such—–it’s like saying women only get dressed up for the pleasure and appreciation of men (and come on, what ever happened to just wanting to look hot for the fun of it!)

  6. Erin says:

I’ve read a few interviews with Zellwegger and she’s a bit of a fitness lover. Loves to run, etc so the figure fits. I understand that she’s a bit on the small side to be playing Bridget Jones, but the weight gain needn’t be as much as it’s been in the past. Interesting.

  7. Manda says:

I dunno, I always thought women were supposed to have curves. I get disgusted when I see women (especially older women) with small frail looking physiques with weird misplaced looking muscles. it doesnt look right. Skinny is one thing, but skinny and muscular is worse….not feminine at all.

  8. M says:

I was a little bummed that Bridget Jones portrayal of a chubby girl looked uncomfortably similar to my curvy frame (time for the gym I suppose). If she’s healthy at the weight she’s at, more power to her. She always looks rather frail, but everyone is built differently.

    • Rachel says:

I was bummed at that too! Like, is that REALLY what is considered chubby now? Same thing with the bit in Love Actually where Hugh Grants assistant calls Natalie chubby…ugh.

IF SHE WERE ANY SKINNIER SHE’D BE A XYLOPHONE

  10. BEEBOP says:

    XYLOPHONE JONES

  11. Emily says:

Why is that its alright for an actor to lose a bunch of weight for a role, like Christian Bale did for one of his new movie roles, but if an actor has to gain weight then its like oh my god, that’s disgusting! I think Renee NEEDS the weight on her, and I admit I’m a curvy girl and I L-O-V-E it that way. Men love curves people, not stick figures with veins popping out of their arms and legs.

  12. DarkEmpress says:

I always find it bizarre that filmmakers hire slim actresses who need to put on weight for their roles. THERE ARE FAT ACTRESSES!!! (Kirstie allie lol) I guess they want really well established actresses who can bring money into the box office, because most of the a-list actresses are thin.

  13. Mona says:

umm, have any of you ever read Bridget Jones Diary? She writes in the diary that she’s anywhere between 125 and 130 pounds- hardly chubby, given that she’s of average height. I thought it was insulting to women when the movie came out and she was labeled as chubby. There is a HUGE difference between curvy and overweight, and I think that Renee looks bloated for most of the movie anyways, with ill fitting clothes.

  14. Reno says:

Why is she famous? She looks like a puckered up butt-hole!

  15. jen says:

    Oh no,another sequel? Seriously?

  16. Adam says:

I think she looks awesome, total spank material.

  17. dani says:

whats with her extreme tan legs and not tan upper body? she does look a little skinny, which makes her face/skin seem very puckered. maybe she will strike a balance soon. good for her running though!

  18. Nate says:

I think she’s just a heinous looking human being. She’s grossly skinny. Why do certain people think that looks good?

  19. Alan says:

I think that Renee looks fantastic, from her super-toned and shapely legs to her unconventionally attractive ( and puckered face.) She is exteremely sexy whether at her “Bridget Jones” weight, or, her “Red Carpet” weight.

  20. Alan says:

Oops! How did that extra “e” get into extremely? I must have be thinking about what use I could make of those puckered lips.

  21. Alan says:

Oops! How did that extra “e” get into extremely? I must have been thinking about what use I could make of those sexy, puckered lips of her’s.

  22. Nate says:

I think Alan is Renee’s publicist. It totally sounds like some BS thing that people would say about someone. It doesn’t sound like anything a normal person would say.

  23. I really hate Renee. She did this on the last Bridget Jones flick and it annoyed me then also. I remember her in Empire Records were she was normal and healthy looking and then Bridget Jones where she was a little chubbier but still pretty much normal and now she looks like a skeleton with skin. I thought Bridget Jones had a good message and the message was lost when she pulled this, “I don’t want to get fat (normal) bullshit. Having to put on a fat suite to look normal is ridiculous. Not paying $12.50 for that.

  24. Señor Loco says:

Why is she wearing those wrinkled pantyhose? What? Those aren’t pantyshose?! Ewwwww!!!!

  25. MissLeeLoo says:

All I could think of when I saw that pic was “She looka like-a man!” Miss Swan style! LoL

  26. Kerry says:

she has that Mary Tyler Moore syndrome, where healthy women age, but stay TOO thin, and then just look veiny and have a giant head, like Madonna. On the flipside, if she put on ten or fifteen pounds, her body would look better, but it still wouldn’t excuse the fact that she wears a disgusting greasy ponytail with formalwear. That’s what my hair looks like when I get home from the gym. Is she going jogging, and then just putting a dress on? She always looks like a slob. I’m guessing she gives the world’s greatest head and that’s how she dates these actors.
