Don’t Mind Me, I’m Just Crying Over How Much I Love Taylor Swift

Ummmmm, is there anything conceivably more awesome than Taylor Swift hanging out of a cab singing this version of West Side Story’s “Tonight” as a teaser for the VMA Awards? I think not. MTV hit it out of the ballpark with this one.

There’s a matching — although less phenomenally amazing — teaser featuring Cobra Starship (nice to see them getting some much-deserved attention) and Leighton Meester:

This is all a great start to the awards show. In general, though, everyone’s just going to have to work really, really hard to compensate for the fact that, through forces of nature I will never understand, Russell Brand is being allowed to host again this year. Whatever. Better than Dane Cook, anyway.

  • Aww, those Cobra Starship boys made me smile. If Hollywood ever makes an emo/hipster “West Side Story” remake, then count on me being in the audience, ready with my props in true Rocky Horror fashion.

When was the last time we had a really campy musical to rock out to, anyway? (DON’T say “Mama Mia.”)

    • Reefer Madness (i think it was in 2001?). Seriously it’s like incredibly awesome (if you like RHPS you’ll like Reefer Madness). Also kristen bell is in it. A Very Potter Musical (on viewable on youtube) is a pretty awesome Harry Potter parody musical though not professional it should be. =]

  • Beet, I share in your love for Taylor Swift. Truly I do. But I pray that she will one day start singing songs of a more mature nature and also try and achieve a more polished/sophisticated/adult tone to her voice. The teenage crap is wearing thin. She is 19. Miley Cyrus sure as hell isn’t helping. She is singing more prepubescent/syrupy/Osmond – slash – Daisy Duke – slash – nympho – ish shit than any one can possibly be expected to tolerate. And to top it all off, during every performance she either works a pole like a seasoned stripper or humps the floor more times than Vanessa Hudgens does when riding Zac Efrons face after a coke binge. Her singing “Tonight” in that clip was awesome. Natalie Wood was either 22 or 23 when she recorded that song, I hope when Taylor hits 21 we can expect more of the new and less of the old.

  • T-Swift has MEGA star potential, like she’s insanely pretty, but will somebody please teach the kid how to throw some vibrato in there already?? she must have access to the best when it comes to vocal coaches…MORE VIBRATO baby…do it….

    • yeah hate to say it, but taylor swift isn’t meant to sing any more than us mere mortals. She should stick to songwriting-which is apparently clever although admittedly I wouldn’t listen to those lyrics even if they were sung by another artist. I guess she just has star-power/business sense.

I love when cool people break into song musical style. West Side Story rocks.

  • i hated russell brand when i watched him at last year’s show…but then i saw him in forgetting sarah marshall and now i hate him less. i don’t think a lot of ppl get his sense of humor here in the states. guess we’ll have to see how he does this year!

eck i’ve never seen wss and don’t want to! not my cup of tea.

  • I was in the car yesterday with my 4 and 7 year old nieces and we had to listen to Taylor Swift’s CD. I wanted to blow my brains out. Her voice is boring and the songs are trite. There should be a moratorium on using the names “Romeo and Juliet” in all songs, it’s just so insipid.

  • Polka Pants, Kristy, Persistent Cat, I AM WITH YOU. Taylor Swift is just another pretty face who can’t really sing–only worse, she thinks she can.

Also, did anyone else have a problem with the way she pronounced “night” as “noight”?

  • I LOVE Taylor Swift, but honestly her cover of Tonight was darn right wretched. I guess she’s good at singing her OWN songs, which now that I think of it don’t have much of a range. Whatever, at least she writes her own stuff.

  • I ADORE Taylor Swift, and I’m also a Cobra Starship fan, but I HATE Russel Brand. Why in the hell would MTV make the same mistake twice? I don’t find him the least bit funny. In Forgetting Sarah Marshall, he wasn’t half bad, but as for his little “stand up act” it sucks. Plain and simple.
