Kelly Clarkson has been fighting with her record label in an effort to stop the release of her single “Already Gone”. She co-wrote the lyrics against a trace provided by Ryan Tedder, a music producer. Turns out, Tedder gave the same track to Beyonce who used the music as the backdrop to her single “Halo”.
Clarkson says, “No one’s gonna be sittin’ at home, thinking ‘Man, Ryan Tedder gave Beyoncé and Kelly the same track to write to.’ No, they’re just gonna be saying I ripped someone off…I fought and fought”. In the end, they’re releasing it without my consent. It sucks, but it’s one of those things I have no control over. I already made my album. At this point, the record company can do whatever they want with it. It’s kind of a sh- – -y situation, but . . . you know, you learn.”
I’ve posted both tracks above. Which is better? I’m sure all the Evil Beet regulars know my vote.
Poor Kelly Clarkson! I would be so upset if a musician sold me the same music. I really like both songs and the music is really similar but it’s not like they are the same lyrics. Lots of great artists use similar beats and instrumentals. I really hope that no one tries to bomb on Kelly Clarkson or Beyonce(Sasha Fierce!) for this.

I see the similarities but I don’t think anyone can honestly tell the difference unless it was pointed out.
I loved the ‘Already Gone’ the first time I heard it and I’m super excited that it’ll be the next single!
Also, does anyone else see Tedder in a different light after this? That’s really sketch for him to do, especially knowing how Kelly, of all people, would be offended. Was it Tedder’s decision to give the trace to Beyonce?
I noticed this as soon as I got Kelly’s CD. (since I also have Beyonce’s) But like others have said, the song isn’t similar so to me it’s not that big of deal, yeah it is shady of the guy though!
and having both CD’s I have to say this was my favorite track off of Kelly’s from the jump. Maybe because I was going thru a break up when I first heard it…

I want to believe Kelly Clarkson b/c she’s the innocent, down-home country gal, but why did they make a music video? “Halo” has been out on the radios for a few months and is finally disappearing (thank GOD, I cant STAND Beyonce and her weird yodeling.) I’m sure Kelly Clarkson already heard the song before filming her vid… I dunno. The entertainment business is so messed up.
She has a contract that she can’t break, so if they tell her to do a music video then she has to do it.
Music videos can take months to produce. She could have filmed this over a year ago for all we know.
I’ve never heard Halo (that I’m aware of). Maybe Kelly hasn’t either.
I actually think it’s really interesting to see how two artists interpreted the same backing track completely differently.

I’d take Halo to the island too…just a happier, more upbeat song. However, KC has a much better voice…though her interp of the song is just too depressing.
I’m not a fan of Beyonce but… “Halo” is a good song. I loveee her vocals in this song… they’re so deep and it just sounds amazing. Kelly’s track doesn’t sound like anything special, but this is a standout song for B.

Has anyone here heard about Axis of Awesome’s “Four Chords”? It’s a funny song in which they show that most of the hit pop songs in the past forty years have utilized the same progression of four chords. It’s not really a bad thing, I guess those chords are just appealing to most people. I like both Kelly’s song and Beyonce’s song, and I probably would have noticed that they were similar even without having it pointed out to me, but a lot of pop songs are similar (and I still love them), so I don’t really care.

Kelly shot the video in the last few weeks with Joseph Kahn. He tweeted about it, seems there was drama there too. He said he doesn’t think he won a single battle on the video and that everybody’s opinion mattered but his.

I think the reason why Kelly was so furious about this is because she had been a part in crafting the melody and not just the lyrics. She cowrote this with Ryan Tedder and in fact, rumor has it that she has 40% songwriting credits while Ryan only has 30%. There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing your own music being ripped off by another artist.
