Mary Carey, the porn-star-turned-gubernatorial-candidate-turned-rehabette on VH1’s Sober House, was spotted getting wasted and pole-dancing at JET Nightclub in The Mirage. Says a spy: “She was doing shot after shot but managed to hold onto her booze while working that pole like the pro that she is. She had a huge wardrobe malfunction in the underwear department. Every time she kicked her leg up in the air the nearby partiers got an up close view of her naughty bits.”
Now I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I hate hate HATE those VH1 shows about celebrities in rehab. The addiction to fame goes hand-in-hand with the addiction to alcohol and drugs, and you CANNOT effectively treat one while engaging the other. These shows do these people a huge disservice, and I think VH1 and especially Dr. Drew — who took the Hippocratic oath that begins “first, do no harm” — ought to be ashamed of themselves.
I’ll tell you what makes me even more upset: My “source” here is a PR agency. And it’s not Mary Carey’s PR agency. I’ll leave it as an exercise for the reader to guess who this PR firm represents. But the email was very clear: These photos and this story are NOT to be attributed back to the agency. They just want it to look like a leak. They want Mary Carey to get better soooo badly that they’re willing to totally throw her under the bus and alert the media when she slips up, as addicts are wont to do. Classy, folks. Real classy. Don’t watch this shit, people. They’re destroying lives.

And for everyone against the show, I can understand why. But I am not taking this as a huge failure for the show. Most addicts will relapse time and time and time again. This is not surprising.

Dr Drew is getting those people into treatment, that’s the important thing, and it’s a sort of public service to show what kind of things really go on. The things famous people do in rehab pale in comparison to what normal people do in rehab.

Dr. Drew isn’t a fake doctor like “Dr.” Phil. so the comparison is ridiculous. Drew is an actual board certified practicing internal medicine physician and is the director of a drug dependency center.

I first heard Dr. Drew in SoCal on Love Line in, oh, 1989 or so. He was a sexist, exploitive, shallow douche bag then and he remains one. Sure, he might be licensed. He went to school. He….”knows some stuff.” We get it. That doesn’t mean he’s good at what he does or that what he does is appropriate or even helpful much of the time. He’s good at Med Shtick. And making dough off of stupid people. Can’t really fault him for the latter, though Beet is correct to point out that much of what he does violates his Hippocratic oath.
So I’m joining the ranks of shit talkers. But I do know what I am talking about. I’ve kind of been hating on this guy for 20 years….so I guess you could say I’m a Dr. Drew expert. And by that I mean, “I knit for fun and have cobwebs in my vagina.”

i don’t know much about dr. drew, but i don’t think it is ethical for a doctor to put his patients on television and then profit off their problems. whatever happened to confidentiality? yes, i know they all signed a waiver, but i don’t think any of them are in the mental state to sign anything. as far as his success rate at actually treating addicts, he doesn’t seem to be having much luck.
