Sci Fi Channel Changes Name to Syfy

As part of a rebranding campaign that seeks to distinguish the channel and its programming from cable competitors, the Sci Fi channel is changing its name to Syfy, with a new motto, “Imagine Greater.”

One big advantage of the name change, the executives say, is that Sci Fi is so generic that it could not be trademarked. They also want to be viewed as having a broader range of programming. “If you ask people their default perceptions of Sci Fi, they list space, aliens and the future,” said the president of the network. “That didn’t capture the full landscape of fantasy entertainment: the paranormal, the supernatural, action and adventure, superheroes.”

Thoughts? Does anyone care?

  • Oh, yeah, am I excited.

I can’t wait to scroll through my TV listing menu just to see the sheer awesomeness that ‘SyFy’ is emblazoned on my screen. It’s going to make the watching so much better. And so much more intruguing. Oh, yes.

Dude, those marketing execs over at SyFy really know their apples from their bynynys. Erm, bananas.

  • I don’t really care about the name change, all I care is the shows I watch. As long as my shows don’t get cancelled, Sci Fi/Syfy and I are will get along.

    • yeah, i think it may be a marketing ploy to appeal to younger audiences….but young or old, people who watch the scifi/syfy channel are still huge dorks (myself included)

  • My rat bastard cable company removed them from my system and now want to charge me an extra $14 to get it back. Scuzbucket CEOs.

  • I lost interest in the Sci Fi Channel when it stopped airing even the reruns of MST3K a few years ago.

The channel sucks, whether they’re spelling their name in a stupid way or not.

    • Agreed! I miss MST3K so badly! Now I only tune in for Ghost Hunters, or hear about their awesome movies on The Soup.

      • The Soup only mentions the movies because of how ridiculous their special effects are (like soldiers wearing bicycle helmets or someone screaming after their head’s been bitten off) not because they’re ‘awesome’. Also, the president of the network should look into what Sci-Fi stands for. Science Fiction has to do with space and the future.. that’s why half of the name is SCIENCE. There’s no science in paranormal or superheroes, president douchebag

  • Too bad there’s hardly ever any traditional Sci Fi on the Sci Fi channel. Oooh monster movies, where’s the space bitch?

  • I think everybody should be concerned about this radical new title change, except maybe those of us who don’t collect comic books and/or chose to move out of their parents’ basement before the age of 30.

    • ok listen. if u dont care about this crap fine. but don’t you think it’s a bit childish and ignorant of you to feel the need to bash the people who YOU think are the ones that watch sci fi channel? I happen to be one of those people that collects comics and i never lived in my damn parents basement you prejudice freak. and beet, question. your not allowed to post racist/hate speak of any kind on here so why is it ok to bash on geeks? its the same thing as making fun of any other group!!!

      • Making fun of geeks is cool. We are all geeky in our own way. Like, for me, I want to correct Mama’s “your” to a “you’re.” I am a grammar geek, and I am proud of it!

    • As a fellow geek, I can’t say I can make the leap from geek-bashing to hate speech. We’ve never had trouble electing an openly geeky president. I’ll allow it.

  • Damn! That probably means they’re going to have to change all those commercials about “sc IF i” since it won’t be spelled that way. Those were better than most of the programs I watched…

  • I registered SyFyL.US based on the obvious pun… and put a forum there to discuss it, too. (no ads – I’ll make no money on it – just thought it would be nice to have a place to talk about it…)

  • Ooh, I do love me some Ghost Hunters.

Seems like a large expense to turn over something so lame anyway. The accountant in me just thinks about the cost of new letterhead and business cards and signs and on and on and on. Just doesn’t seem worth it.

  • I honestly stopped watching Sci Fi when they canceled Tremors the Series, That was honestly the last good show on there, now they all they have is magnified puppets and bad Videogame characters on the screen. If I want to see anything like “Battlestar Galactica” I just pop in Crysis, and play my own singleplayer mission that I programmed. 0 gravity and floating Aircraft carriers! WooHoo!!!
And when I want to see Sci Fi action, I just pop in Red Faction: Guerilla into my Xbox360 and throw in some car bombs and kill some EDF!
Honestly, Sci Fi was good when they had Sci Fi, now they have cheezey monster movies and poor quality nerdograms. No more will I ever get to enjoy Tremors, Starwars, Dusk Till Dawn, Armageddon, Dejavu, or other excelent movies… Oh well, *Changes Channel*
