One Night Only

siegfried-and-roy

Siegfried and Roy returned to the stage to perform a signature illusion and raise money for charity. The pair performed with the massive white tiger Montecore, also known as the tiger that mauled Roy some 5 years ago and left him partially paralyzed.

After the incident, Siegfried and Roy’s show, which ran for 13 years with over 5,000 performances went dark, and the illusionists went into semi-retirement. Their performance last night was the highlight of a benefit for the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.

I can’t believe that tiger is still around! I thought it was general practice that once a tiger attacks a human they’re put down. Roy’s recovery has been amazing, and I give him props for sharing the stage with the animal that crushed his windpipe, but no way in hell would you catch me in that situation.

Once the tiger attempts to eat my face, that tiger and I can no longer be friends.

  • Why should the tiger pay for Roy’s stupidity? He even stated it was his fault. He’s sending a positive signal here by not blaming a wild animal so thumbs up! (Not that I would return with a tiger.. but then I wouldn’t perform with a tiger in the first place)

    • I agree. Annoy the fuck out of a wild animal by putting it in captivity and forcing it to do stupid tricks, and you risk getting hurt.

Not having the tiger put to sleep was the first admirable thing that I know of that Roy has done.

  • For anyone who thinks the tiger intentionally mauled Roy – read up on it. By all accounts, the tiger intended to help Roy, who had fallen, just as a mother would pick up her cub by the scruff of the neck. The tiger had no way of knowing that his teeth would puncture Roy’s neck.

    • this!
it’s true. they think that the tiger thought the audience was hurting roy, so the tiger was just trying to help him get out of harms way. when you work with big, dangerous animals, this is part of it. even when they’re trying to be gentle, they can kill you.

  • I read somewhere after this happened, that Roy was the one who insisted the tiger be kept alive, because he understood that it wasn’t an intentional attack, and that it would be unfair to kill the tiger for that.I’m glad they didn’t.Tigers (like all wild animals),weren’t created for our entertainment, and certainly not to be brought up as ‘pets’.Humans tend to keep messing in places, and with things we shouldn’t be messing with, and then get all mad when things go to shit.

  • Wow.. Roy looks pretty normal for someone that was mauled by a tiger.. Siegfried looks like he was scared straight.. or at least he’s dressing like he’s straight lol

  • wild animals should not be doing tricks for humans, period. i have no sympathy for him, but i do think it is great that he took responsibility for the attack.

  • Poor Roy! So how tired do you think he is of hearing people saying to him, “Dude, you looked like something the cat dra…” Okay, okay…sorry, not funny.
