Is Anyone Else Watching Toddlers & Tiaras?

pageant

You guys, I’ve found my new favorite show.

It’s on TLC, and, each week, they follow three families whose children are competing in little-girl beauty pageants.

When I say “little girls,” I just want you to know that I am not talking about 12-year-olds. These girls are 6 or under. In the debut episode, one lady was competing her 2-year-old, who apparently started pageants as a 4-month-old. And she wasn’t kidding! There are BABIES at these pageants. In one of the episodes, they award “Best Hair” to a five-month-old baby with NO HAIR. And the baby who won? Was fast asleep during the crowning ceremony. BECAUSE SHE WAS A LITTLE BABY! I turned to Leo and said, “You know the last time that mother was present for a crowning? When she gave birth to that child last week.”

And they’re spray-tanning these little girls (it makes a 4-year-old cry — OF COURSE! Any reasonable 4-year-old would cry in one of those scary spray-tan machines. I’m 26 and they still scare me! Mostly because I think about that episode of Friends where Ross quadruple-tans just one side. But I digres…) and they put fake eyelashes on the girls and give them FAKE FRONT TEETH (they’re called “flippers”) to perfect their smiles when they’re in that tooth-losing stage of childhood.

And the moms keep talking about how much the kids looooove this, and the kids just keep crying and fussing and they obviously feel incredibly pressured by their parents.

On the most recent episode, this little girl Bella won, and she burst out into tears. Her mom was like, “Bella, you never cry at these!” and Bella was just sobbing, saying “I won back the money we spent!” And her mom was like, “Oh, it’s so nice to see her take such pride in her win,” when it’s obvious this 5-year-old had felt the families finances weighing on her own little shoulders.

I did see a handful of girls who seemed to actually enjoy the performance part of pageantry — and whose families seemed reasonable, didn’t spend a ton of money, and allowed the girls to go on stage without makeup or elaborate hair. But that was NOT THE NORM.

Anyway, I’m hooked beyond hooked. This is a subculture I find fascinating. I would watch hours and hours and hours of this stuff if you’d let me, and I will be eagerly awaiting future episodes, like the disturbed person that I am.

Have any of you seen this show?

What are your thoughts?

  • Obsessed. There are a few shows out there like it and I love them. I feel sympathy for the girls and am secretly jealous that at 6 they look so much prettier than me. Weird, I know.

These girls are so young and it’s such a major part of their (and their entire family’s) lifestyle. I wonder what will happen if/when they stop competing in these? I also wonder the severity of emotional damage these children face when they’re learning that looks and “talent” are all that matters. It’s sad when kids leave that age of innocence behind, I can’t imagine rushing my future children into it.

    • people watch this stuff for what reason? honestly, i do not understand why people support these shows by watching. those parents steal the innocence of a childhood by teaching their kids to compete. those girls don’t look prettier than adults, its just natural that they are cute. so if you really feel jealous that a child looks prettier than you, you shoud think about your self esteem. its called scheme of childlike characteristics or babyfaceness hypothesis – thats why everybody seems to like round cheeks, large eyes and a small nose. if you like dolls visit your next toy store.. don’t go. run! maybe the girls really like to dress and play princess sometimes, okay, fine, but those parents have a serious problem: not only that they try to gain fame, money and tv presence on the expense of their children innocence, i think they just don’t feel beautiful as grown-ups and i really hope, that if their children turns out to be not only physically but also mentally princess they will buy her everything she wants. the spirits that i called

  • My Sociology teacher is getting her PhD and her main focus are these kinds pageants. 4 of us accompanied her to 3 of the them and I swear to go, it is the most bizarre thing.

When I first saw the flippers and found out just how much they cost, I almost fainted. The trend I noticed was that the mothers of these little girls, hardly ever look made up. When interviewed, they basically said that they were projecting their beauty onto their children since themselves never have time to make themselves look good.

And the cattiness is ridiculous. You can always tell when it’s a girl’s first time in the pageant because the over-done hair and tan are missing. Their dresses are pretty but not elaborate and they haven’t perfected the “come-hither” look that many of the more experienced girls do. The way the mothers talk about these inexperienced girls is alarming. The knock them down and don’t even try. And the daughters watch and learn, so you have little 4 year olds telling other 4 year olds that they really need to work on their walk, tan and smile and that they are going to win, no matter what.

    • What a waste of a PhD! Most Doctoral Dissertations are meant to be burned! Its a shame that most PhD candidates are Liberals who take up the most insignificant of projects and attempt to legitimize then through this “research” process creating more mess for Academicians as myself who must “recognize” the significance of the scholarship – which is a crock of shit!! College and college degrees are not simply in the Liberal Arts area nor meant only for Liberal minded folks — Can you imagine that 97% of all college and university professors are Liberals leaving 59% of the world out of college instruction!
Do you all think truly that your instructors are informed beyond a point of their emotional involvement with a so-called “issue” and that your college degree represents anything other than you were able to work through a stated program? Thats it – your degrees nor the degrees of Ph D candidates do not indicate that their topics are important, significant to take up your class time and especially, to waste your education discussing matters that do not concern either the student or PhD candidate – can you see how she is emotionally and hardy academically or empirically research minded? she is caught up in a PET PEEVE!! And this becomes scholarship? I cant believe that her Committee Members would approve of this rut!!
ADUM, I doubt you have a half of a brain to realize that your Sociology Instructor is robbing you of your education in Sociology! The world is made up of far more influential sub-groups than “Pretty Girl Pageant Moms” It is bizarre but more bizarre is academe — That is a SICK and DISEASED profession. I am looking to get out of it now that my kids are educated and professionals and gainfully employed. I love teaching but its too sick of a place for me to remain -painful to watch and listen to the crap that pours out of a lecturers OR students mouth. Sadness and sigh.
      Over.

  • I absolutely hate how they stick make-up on these little kids to make them look like little sluts. I would never let my daughter even touch make-up until she was like around 16. These are just kids.

Oh and you want to see what happens to these girls after robbing them of their childhood… go here to see “Ballet Blue”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_THqHqUXZU

Is this not wrong, or is it just me. How/why would parents be pleased to see their daughter perform like this. This would actually ties in with a column here from few weeks ago on the young boys.

    • Ugh I hate you for making me watch that……. uggggh I feel dirty.

Some of those comments were f*cked too

      • See Lisa??? See why i said what i said the other day??…. This is so sad, and i am shocked, i had no idea about this show or group or whatever they are, i told my mother to come and see this, and her first comment was “a pedophile’s dream come true”…… This is fucked up, and so is that show on TLC, i didn’t watch it, but i’ve seen the comercials for it, and i remember seeing this little girl, in front of a mirror, looking at herself wearing a swimming suit, and saying “uh i look good” and that was more than enough for me, because i honestly believe it’s fucked up..

    • Yes, the comments were actually more disgusting than the video until you think some parent(s) were probably watching that performance with pride and hoping their daughter didn’t make a mistake instead of realizing she would be a target for pedophiles on the internet.

      • Amen! This just seems like legalized pedo-porn! Let the kids be kids, at least until they’re old enough to decide whether or not they want to do this on their own. Your kids aren’t *your* road to fame and riches. They’re your children, to be cared for, nurtured, and above all, loved.

    • I think I’d be mortified if my 16 year old daughter did this dance. The combination of that song and the dance are just completely inappropriate for a televised all-ages dance competition.

    • That is in no way-shape-or form ballet, thoes are stripper moves, i couldnt even make it through the whole video, what show was that? Who would teach their children to dance like that, i cant believe they didnt have their bellybuttons peirced and have tattoos. That was so sick it should be labled NSFW, nasty.

    • I can’t believe someone would let their child do that and wear that. I agree that some of those post were creepy and scary….see what doing that kind of stuff attracts…sickos

    • All I can think of when I watch that is Sparkle Motion from Donnie Darko. Creepy.

“Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion!”

  • I LOVE TLC. Last night I got sucked into back to back shows of pregnant man, woman who was pregnant for 47 years, and woman with the biggest legs. I saw the previews for the Toddlers and Tiaras show and I am bummed I missed it!!! I am fascinated with these people and their obsessions with forcing their children to compete. Did you ever see that episode of the Sarah Silverman Show where she gets all dolled up and tries to compete again (at 29)? She then takes a young girl under her wing in an effort to get her to win so that she can feel the joy of wearing the tiara for herself.

Best quote EVER from that episode :

“You can walk away and give birth to a failure that will haunt you the rest of your life or you can go out there and have the abortion of your dreams.”

Don’t know why, but felt the need to share that gem.

  • people watch this stuff for what reason? honestly, i do not understand why people support these shows by watching. those parents steal the innocence of a childhood by teaching their kids to compete. those girls don’t look prettier than adults, its just natural that they are cute. so if you really feel jealous because a child looks prettier than you, you should think about your self esteem. its called scheme of childlike characteristics or babyfaceness hypothesis – thats why everybody seems to like round cheeks, large eyes and a small nose. if you like dolls visit your next toy store.. don’t go. run! maybe the girls really like to dress and play princess sometimes, okay, fine, but those parents have a serious problem: not only that they try to gain fame, money and tv presence on the expense of their children innocence, i think they just don’t feel beautiful as grown-ups and i really hope, that if a girl turns out to be not only physically but also mentally princesslike they will buy her everything she wants.. the spirits that i called. and i really hope, that those parents still love their children when the kids loose their innocence just naturally by growing up.

i’m sorry if there are many mistakes. i am not a native speaker.

    • re: “people watch this stuff for what reason?”

because it is super, super f*cked up. And some people find really f*cked up stuff fascinating.

      can’t help it.

TLC can be sooo awesome. I love all the obese specials… the one ton man was great!!

I have only seen one part of this one (with the OBVIOUSLY GAY FATHER. That was so weird). But I love this crap.

  • I also find it odd that the Mothers of the girls competing are rarely remotely cleaned up. All tank tops and flip flops. No makeup with ratty hair. I am far more interested in the crazy behavior of the Mothers than what the children are doing on stage.

There was a movie years ago… called Drop Dead Gorgeous… which to this day cracks me up. “Smile Baby!!” Which really highlights the craziness of the Mothers of the girls competing.

  • ” I turned to Leo and said, “You know the last time that mother was present for a crowning? When she gave birth to that child last week.” ”

Ha Ha Haaaaaaaaa!!! oh my god, couldn’t stop laughing at that one.

  • This show seriously, seriously disturbs me. I am totally disgusted by it and I honestly don’t know how social services does not intervene in these families and take those kids away.

  • I could never enjoy watching something that I consider to be a form of child abuse. I’m actually surprised that something like that would be allowed on TV. Or maybe I should just be surprised that I’m surprised.

    • I totally agree with you. And yet, people consider me a phsyco for feeling that way.. They say “how can i not watch something that’s on tv??” so yeah, i’m with you, maybe i should just be surprised that im surprised as well..

  • WRONG! I will watch a lot of shows on TLC, but they are shows about adults. This is clearly exploitation. Children so young should absolutely not be under this much pressure to look beautiful and to win. Eek!

  • So I watched my first show the other night and then spent the whole next day watching T&T and other shows like it on YouTube. Why do these “professional” girls walk so funny? The father of one of the contestants was so into it I think it was his lifelong dream to be a beauty queen. The male “coaches” these mothers hire are all flaming queens. Not quietly gay but flaming and when they do “the Walk” – oh God. I love watching the show for the parents in the audience. They are more excited and know more about the routine than the girls. I’ve also seen behavior that verges on abuse and this is when they parents know the cameras are on them. What happens when they get their kids home alone? Most of the kids act like spoiled brats.

What happens when these kids grow up? Can you really make much of a living as a beauty queen or Pagent judge? These parents should spend their time training their children to learn a real skill. I have a nephew who is dating a beauty queen contestant and she is gorgeous. But she always comes in first runner up and never gets the big prize. I think she spends way more on the contest than she ever wins. I bet she’ll have her little girl in contests just to carry on her dream.

  • Take these kids away from these sick twisted mind-f*cking parents and sterilize these jerks so they can’t abuse any more kids. This is child abuse, plain and simple, and Jon Benet Ramsey should have been the end of these horrible pageants.

    • ummmm… worse things happen to kids. I’m sorry, I think pageants are gross,.. but that is just going too far.

  • jon benet much wtf these ppl should b shot 4 this shit. everyone else already said it but i was so pissed i had to say it 2.

  • I have seen these episodes. My best friend started putting her daughter in pagents when she was about 6 months old. I went to a lot of them and the little girl had the time of her life. My best friend NEVER put make up on her daughter, flippers or any of that crap and her little girl won many many titles… including Queen. When she turned 4 she didnt want to do it anymore and they have never went back since. Some of these kids do really enjoy it and others obviously not. I found it extremely uncomfortable to see some of these parents get so worked up during these competititions. It was almost painful. I say, if you child is truely having a great time, then do it. If they are screaming and crying and complaining that they want to go play in the mud, like my daughter, then let them be. Nothing is more important than the happiness and well being of your child.

  • Oh goodness! I got a knot in my stomach just reading this. No child of this age should even be aware of the financial matters of the household, much less be aware that her winning prize money by being the “hottest” child would fix any problem in the household. This is mental torture on these children and should be classified as child abuse.

  • three reasons i think these shows are creepy: 1) these pagents are like a god-send for pedophiles, like their fantasies come to life. 2) the idea that little girls should be so focused on how they look is scary, and is setting them up for alot of body image issues later on 3) i doubt that most of these girls enjoy the competition, but even if they do, so what? you are the parent and you need to step in and make hard decisions. after all, most kids like doing stuff that is not good for them but that’s why you are the adult. i think these pagents are sick, but i think the mothers are even sicker.

  • It’s wrong on so many levels. They’re raising spoiled little b*tches who are in for a dose of reality when they grow up. Beauty fades but b*tchiness is bone-deep.

  • OMG I watch this and have been waiting for someone to admit to watching it too! The little girl that creeped me out the most is the one from the first episode who wanted to buy a “cow” with her winnings. She looks in the mirror at herself and says eerily, “I look good.” Her voice haunted me for a week after that.

These mothers and in that one case “the pagaent father” who shall we say is a wee bit light in the loafers…not that there’s anything wrong with that….are wackadoodle. And, did you notice they are always from some lonely Texas town.

I could go on…but thanks for being my partner in crime on this show!

  • The whole idea and the video just made me cry….I hate this shit. What the hell is wrong with these parents?

    • It’s an unstoppable trend. If the kids are a reflection of their parents, they don’t have a chance in hell. Who will save them. With all these lay-offs, and depression, drinking and drugs will be out of control. The little helpless kids will just become objects and toys to the ones taking care of them.

  • Its very obvious that the people behind this documentary don’t support it and are showing us how crazy it is. They don’t even need to state an opinion we just get what they are saying through some of the hilarious editing! And how about that GAY DAD?!?!?!? I support gay parents, but that pagent dad dude needs be real with his damn self! Is his “wife” delusional?!?!?!

  • i just want to point out that ross ended up getting sprayed EIGHT times by the last scene.

    sincerely,

    major friends geek

  • Seen it. Hate it. Not watching it again.
Enjoy watching dumb hick/ ghetto fabulous mothers whore their children out. That’s not my scene.

  • This show is unbelievable to me. How these mothers can possibly believe that they are no exploiting their daughters is beyond me. If you watch the mothers while they are in the audience during the performance portions of the pageants, you will notice that THEY are doing the routine, as well, THEY are mouthing the words to the songs, THEY are performing the body gyrations…..Why? Because they wish it was THEM onstage…since they can’t be, they will pimp their little girls.
    Sad and sick.

  • My daughter does pageants, but not the “glitz and glamour” pageants. The first “pageant” my daughter did was based solely on community service instead of looks. They were not permitted to have makeup or anything like that. Another one she did also forbid makeup and the types of dresses they could wear and also focused on community service and teaching young girls to help out those around them. There was no “talent” (a.k.a. stripper 101) portion…thank God. I would not subject my daughter to anything like the extreme pageants shown on TLC. There are pageants out there that teach girls how to be comfortable talking and apearing in front of groups of people (helps with shyness and socialization) and that value service and a sense of community….not the psycho makeup/hairspray/fake teeth/fake tan lifestyle.

    teeheee

  • LETS TURN IT ALL AROUND..WE SHAVE THE MOTHERS’ HAIR ON ALL HER BODY PARTS (BABIES DON’T HAVE HAIR), SLAP DIAPERS ON THEM JUST LIKE BABIES , PUT THEM ON A DIET OF SOME HORRIBLE BABY FORMULA, MAKE THEM CRAWL ACROSS A STAGE AND LIMIT THEIR VOCABULARY TO “MAMA” “DADA” AND “BYE BYE”.

  • Hmmm If I was a pedophile, I’d be TIVOing this show as often as I could, and would judge how cute the kids are by how far my orgam left my genitals.

    That show is just sick.

  • I hate this show. What is wrong with the parents of these children?! I guess they just have very low IQ”s. The way they dress them and put make up on them…awful. this show should be cancelled and these pageants should be against the law.

  • I don’t see the huge deal. I see girls in pretty dresses with weird hair and some make up walking on stage. Yes, some of the moms are nuts. Not all, though, and no more than any other child sport. Im not really understanding the pediphile-kiddie porn comments. If you look at a child in a fully covering dress with some sparkle and your mind goes to sex, the dress and child isn’t the problem. There’s so much worse out there that pediphiles can go nuts over, including your kid at the mall.

If we were to sit here and analyze every child activity, then they’d all be banned. Cheer, dance, gymnastics- all force girls to be skinny and no eat to the point of having no periods and stunted growth. Force girls to push beyond injury causing early retirement and alot of surgeries and repair. They practice for HOURS everyday. And for what? very little will actually make it to the Olympic level. Cheer gets you no where as an adult.
Boys do baseball, football, basketball, soccer- all have HUGE injry risk that could hurt them for life. We shove footballs down our boys’ throats before they are even born! Steroid use in these sports are just nuts! Nevermind the bruises and breaks they come home with, just so, at the end of the week, they are sitting on the bench cause some glorified team coach tells them they aren’t good enough. Most will not make it to the professional level.

Don’t like pageants, fine. Don’t watch. Don’t participate. But to say those families are idiots is just hypocracy.

Oh, and FYI, there was NO PROOF that JonBenet’s death had ANYTHING to do with pageants. Nothing even pointed in that direction. Based on that alone, ALL children’s activities would have been banned since Im sure that, with all the child abductions and murders, I think we’ve probably covered ALL activities if we eliminated based on what the victims participated in before their deaths. If we look at statistics, since only ONE pageant child has become a victim compared to other child sports, Pageants would be the safer place/activity.

Im not a pageant support. Im a common sense supporter. Just because some of you don’t like it doesn’t make it evil and child abuse. And Im sure the real victims of real child abuse would like people to stop throwing that term around so lightly.

  • I totally get where your comeing from! I thought I was obsessed with pageants to! I love the dress designs and I think its horrible what the pageants are setting up for the childrens emotions in the future!

  • I saw parents taking their girls to the tanning salon…telling them that they’d better improve their walk and talent routine, since their facial beauty will never win them the crown…teaching them that physical beauty is the most important thing in life (one mom actually said that VERY THING!!!). You can’t watch this show and tell me this is okay. For the poster comparing pageants to soccer and football, I realize you were probably just trying to present a different perspective, but think about how awful you would feel if it were YOUR daughter who was being taught that she wasn’t good enough as the kid she was and had to be slathered in makeup, screamed at until she was able to perfect the creepy, detached smile I’m seeing from those girls and sprayed in the face by fake tanner. These are small children. At least let them reach an age where they can decide for themselves whether or not they want to participate in this filth.

  • Those girls will learn from a young age, that beauty is fake. You cant win without looking fake. You dont look beautiful without fake. Thos pictures look even more fake then their tan. Its just Sad really. if those kids would compete as their beautiful self, without all the fake (i mentioned the word before i think ;) ) i would have less problems. The law should forbid them to do more then 2 a year or something, to prevent parents to lose control over themselves.

  • i agree with sam those girls are learning that fake is good and fake is the only thing that makes them beautiful those moms dont realize that and thats what makes me so mad i just feel like walking up to the moms and slap some sense in to there head what makes me sad is that those kids will probaly not get the same life of normal kids like being punished and stuff like that i realy feel bad for those kids they dont know what the right thing is

  • I did pageants when I was a little girl. Every little girl loves to play dress up and be a princess. Pageants have beed around for a long time. These shows have a lot of editing in them and only show the crazy parents that live through there kids. Not everyone is like that. I gained a lot of confidence and was able to handle criticism easer because of pageants. My girls are now in pageant and love the attention that they get. Some parents go overboard with there kids doing them every weekend and forcing them to do a lot of things that are uncalled for. For example I was at a pageant not to long ago with my little girl and this mother had treats in her pocket and would get her daughter to make faces and do things with her hands the then giver her a treat out of her pocked for doing it. It was disgusting!!!!!! I couldn’t believe it. These are the kind of people that they show on TLC!!!!

  • I think this is so bad. and you are fucked up in the head if you think it is right, yall are sick and i hope you know that this is a form of child abuse and beauty pageants can cause contestants to committ suicide or do drugs because of depression,

  • the mothers are sick living their fantasies through their children, pushing them to the limit, because its what they want, what about the one that is 4yrs old that has got false boobs, and bottom enhancers,no wonder there are perverts, this programme fills their filthy needs,i question what the motives of the older male judges are too,get it off,the parents should face child abuse charges, god knows what goes on in these families,it encourages incest, its disgusting.

  • the little girls on toddlers and tiarras are so sexy im a 37 yr old male and I would fuck any of them in a heartbeat
