I Don’t Know Why You Guys Watched the Grammys, But You Did

joe_jonas

I tried to watch the Grammys last night. It’s been awhile since I’ve actually sat down and attempted to watch an awards show. Normally I just look at all the dresses on the photo agencies’ websites, and then I read about the winners online, and if something notable happens during the ceremony, you guys will email me about it instantly (because you ROCK).

So I set my DVR and tried to watch the show last night, but I ended up fast-forwarding through damn near everything, and I gave up about an hour and a half in. I just couldn’t do it anymore! I have to admit, though, that I enjoyed the collaboration between the Jonas Brothers and Stevie Wonder. It was really good! I refuse to learn all their names, but that oldest JoBro is getting to be relatively attractive and talented. Sigh. I hate that I’m admitting that. But, last night, I kind of got a glimpse of what all the fuss is about. Now let us never talk about this again.

Also brilliant: Jennifer Hudson, who makes it look so easy. It just comes so effortlessly to her — she’s so wonderful on stage. She’s like a magical little singing creature. She blows everyone else out of the water.

Totally awful: Everyone else, especially Katy Perry. Honestly Katy Perry should issue an apology today for her performance last night. It was embarrassing for everyone, including those of us who had to watch. The Taylor Swift/Miley Cyrus duet hurt me physically as well. And WTF is up with Miley being all like, “This is my best friend Taylor Swift”? I thought Mandy Jiroux was her best friend!!! Is this the end of the Miley and Mandy Show? Noooo! I’ll just die of sadness!

OK, but here’s my point: The Grammys were awful and boring, and yet you guys watched them in huge numbers!

Weekend TV’s Big Winner, Besides Coldplay, et. al: The Grammys. From 8-11:30 p.m., the show averaged an estimated 19.1 million, CBS said. If the number holds, the show will have grown by nearly 2 million viewers from last year, and will have scored its second-biggest audience of the past five telecasts.

Guess You Had to See It to Believe It: The Jonas Brothers-Steve Wonder jam aired during the Grammys’ most-watched prime-time half-hour, averaging 21.3 million from 9-9:30 p.m., Nielsen estimates showed.

Don’t Take It Personally, Neil Diamond: Like many shows, the Grammys petered out as the night wore on. The show’s 10:30 p.m. half-hour, featuring performances by Diamond and a John Mayer-assisted Bo Diddley tribute, was its least-watched in prime time, with 17.6 million viewers.

Please note that these numbers are still small compared to what AmIdol brings in regularly, but, still. Damn good numbers for an awards show.

Did you watch the Grammys? What made you tune in this year??

What did you think???

  • jhud’s performance was great because of the emotion in it… it was wasn’t up to her usual perfection though.
no matter who you, i dare you to say the jobros and stevie didn’t impress you a tad. they showed up as real artists there.
to t.swift… why the hell would you let miley destroy your song like that? i understand why she was saying she wanted it to be a “raw” performance on teh carpet… she hoped it would make her look better.
    it didn’t
ughhh jonas bros. exes make me cringe.
katy perry was adorable and energentic and beautiful.
MIA… well, if it was anyone else i would have wanted them commited… but she has NO fear. it’s admirable.
coldplay… as much as i don’t want to like them…. well, they are performer… .truly. it was a wonderful show over all… the best grammys i have sat through everrrr

  • oh, and did you mean the oldest jonas brother,or the one you have in the picture above? ’cause that’s the middle brother.
    his name is joe.
the oldest is kevin. he has curly hair.

  • i tuned in for coldplay, adele, and ol’mackie. i wasnt impressed with much of it.

glad kanye restrained himself this year.

  • I only watched about an hour and it was on mute for most of that time. I only tuned in because I wanted to see if Robert Plant and Allison Krauss won anything (WHICH THEY DID OMG SO PSYCHED) and I wanted to see JUST HOW HORRIBLE the Miley/Taylor collab was. And I thought the exact same thing when she was like “Omg, this is Taylor, my best friend…” and I was like “Uh…no she isn’t.” And that song was stupid and insipid and Miley made me want to die. Her singing was AWFUL and the expression on her face looked as if she knew it.
JoBros were okay. Stevie Wonder still kicks their scrawny asses.
And Coldplay sucks and Chris Martin is a douche.

  • i watched to see taylor swift because i absolutely loveeeee her and think she is sooo talented. unfortunately, miley cyrus butchered the song. taylor should have performed by herself. and miley is sooooo annoying, like really.

  • Kings of Leon should have won, Coldplay is not rock. In fact, all the performances I have seen of them in recent years have blown. Last night was no different. U2 was also a disappointment.

The whole show could have been done in 1.5 hours. Too much filler! Why they heck did it need to be 3.5 hrs?? Happy Adele won.

Katy Perry is an insult. I feel like it was pre-recorded too, which makes it that much more horrible. Ugh.

I watched mostly for Radiohead, and they weren’t too bad. I wish all the guys had been there though, but it was cool to have them backed by a band.

  • I actually was impressed with Taylor Swift live for once. Miley though… who told that girl she can sing? She sounded like someone was beating a bag of cats.

I watched Big Love too though, so I’ve only seen youtube of the Miley/Swift performance.

  • I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the Miley/Taylor duet. I thought it was a beautiful song and it’s the only time I’ve thought Miley was decent. Katy Perry sucked terribly. Her performance was just as bad as Brit’s “comeback” a couple years ago at whatever award show that was. And Katy can’t sing for shit either. How did she get famous?

  • i enjoyed taylor swift, miley though did not impress me. but taylor sounds really good. the jonas brothers didn’t impress me and i can say that in all honesty. the sound wasn’t right and the performance seriously just left me wondering why they are so huge. i’ve seen them give better performances, it was incredibly lack luster. u2’s performance was boring. i liked the first half of coldplay’s performance the best, lost sounded better than viva la vida. katy perry’s vocals were horrible, jennifer hudson was amazing. allison krauss and robert plant were good. i will say though and i know most other people won’t acknowledge it i really enjoyed radiohead’s peformance thom yorke is amazing and i love his “dancing”, they are one of the five bands i want to see before i die. they are amazing. anyway paul mccartney was alright, al green justin timberlake and that group was passable. the group with john mayer was decent. the four tops perfomance was okay. i really like adele and sugarland, adele has a beautiful voice. i liked estelle and kanye, however i was not keen on kanye jayz ti and lil wayne, m.i.a was the only one i could hear and i have to give her credit for performing on her due date. kid rock annoyed me. lil wayne didn’t impress me much on his own either.

  • I tried to seriously watch but I just found myself getting angry at the music industry for having zero musical substance anymore and awarding puppets produced by ProTools (exception: Tay swift, she’s a talent to watch)….so I switched back & forth with Sober House…Five minutes watching Steve Adler on H is a whole lot more entertaining than the whole award show was.

Whoever mixed the show needs to be fired, period!

  • I never watch this crap. And if something interesting happens, you know it’ll just be all over the internet. I think I use the internet as a filtering device– it helps guide me to interesting as opposed to boring.

  • Ok, I thought they were so damn long! I kind of hated it. They (The Grammys) were like really, really long. I liked Katy Perry performance, it was kind of funny and colorful & stuff. J-Hudson is absolutely amazing, I love her! Even if I don’t really like her music, I think she’s such a strong woman, I like her so much! I also kind of liked Taylor Swift & Slutty Cyrus’ performance. But Miley messed it all. I’d love it if the performance was without the little slut. Taylor Swift has such a wonderful & sweet voice, Miley’s voice is more like eww. I didn’t like her. I think they were like “Hey, we’re Girls Against Jonas! And we’re here to show them that we are so hot and talented without them!”. I think that was the idea behind the whole performance. I just watched a little bit more and then when it got boring I turned off my tv :).

  • I had my mom watch the Grammys – while I cooked dinner and watched ‘The Rocker’ with my guy – just so she could fill me in when the good parts came on. Needless to say, there weren’t many good parts so I ended up giving up (therefore Google-ing everything today so I could see what I missed). When Miley gave her “This is my best friend Taylor” speech, I actually turned to my mom and was like, “WTF?” and explained (because I read Evil Beet!) how Miley calls everyone her bff and has a show with them. But then I’m thinking, “Ugh, come on, kid…” Exactly. She’s just a kid. It’s slightly annoying, but hey, at least the little ones get a kick out of her. ANYWAY, back to the Grammys: the Jonas Brothers were mildly entertaining and had a great stage presence, Katy Perry gave a lackluster performance (it was like she had to focus so hard on her vocals and moves that she forgot to have personality, show facials, etc.). Paul McCartney made my fucking night (because I love the Beatles with literally everything in me), even if Coldplay pissed me off by ripping off the Sgt. Pepper costumes. I still refuse to like Coldplay. Period.

Oh, and Lil Wayne kicked off a pretty cool set. I love the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

  • this is the first time i watched it and only because blink182 was gonna be there… the grammys is boring and for old people

    blink is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i dvrd it and fast forwarded through everything but the performances. thats the only reason anyone watches the grammys anyways right? no one wants to hear “thanks to my manager and my mom and god” 40 times in a row. katy perry shouldnt ever dance… EVER. and i want to drop kick miley cyrus in the hooha. jhud is amazing. and i found keith urbans random appearance in two performances really odd. i mean does he even have an album out right now, is he really that relevant?

  • I love Coldplay! And Chris Martin is NOT a douche he is so cute! I found the Grammys pretty entertaining this year…there were so many good performances. Coldplay was good, I really liked the guitar tribute to Bo Diddley was it? With BB King and John Mayer and the two other guys…loved “Swagger Like us”!! M.I.A. killed it with her big belly! I effing love her…Lil Wayne was good too but did anyone notice that Robin Thicke messed up the song? He didn’t sing the verse when he was supposed to and threw off the whole rest of the song. Anyway…
and Blink 182 is back together!! Wooo!

  • you liked that terrible jonas brothers/stevie collaboration? oh beet, please say it ain’t so. one of those stupid kids biffed the lyrics, they’re running around on stage missing chords. and the whole “show me what you got stevie” was terrible. please, please tell me you’re joking about liking that performance. please.

  • Okay.. did anybody happen to see Whitney Houston at the beginning though?! All she did was present an award.. and I think that’s about all she was able to do too. She was either drunk out of her mind or cracked out to no end. Ugh.

  • Taylor Swift butchered the song with Stevie Nicks. Stevie Nicks really made the difference in the song. Way to go Stevie.
