Apparently You Just Are That Into The Movie Everyone Said Was Going To Suck

He’s Just Not That Into You took the number one spot at the movies this weekend with a $27.5M haul.  I guarantee that it will be number one next weekend too.  Women will flood the theaters after not landing a Valentine’s Day date with the object of their affection.  May this be a good lesson:  If you are watching Drew Barrymore movies on February 14th instead of getting laid, he’s just not that into you.  Are we clear now?

May I share my own HJNTIY story?  Five years ago, Valentine’s Day also fell on the dreaded Saturday.  I had been dating a guy for a couple of months but he didn’t ask me out for The Big Day.  I received a call from a random online friend who was going to be in the area, asking if I wanted to meet up for drinks.  We met for drinks which evolved into dinner.  While our salads were being served, my cell rang and it was the guy I had been dating.  He called at 7:15 on Valentine’s night asking if I wanted to meet up for dinner.  Now that’s a guy who just wasn’t into me.  At all.  Thankfully, I let it go right to voicemail.  And married the online friend dude instead.

Okay, enough of that.  Other top movies for the weekend were Taken which took $20.3M and The Pink Panther 2 at $12M.  Dakota Fanning is slowly overtaking the world with movies in the number three spot Coraline ($16.3M) and number six spot Push ($10.2M).

1. “He’s Just Not That Into You,” $27.5 million.

2. “Taken,” $20.3 million.

3. “Coraline,” $16.3 million.

4. “The Pink Panther 2,” $12 million.

5. “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” $11 million.

6. “Push,” $10.2 million.

7. “Slumdog Millionaire,” $7.4 million.

8. “Gran Torino,” $7.2 million.

9. “The Uninvited,” $6.4 million.

10. “Hotel for Dogs,” $5.8 million.

      • yeah. Maybe it was just my mood, but I think it did what the aim of it was, and portrayed the book pretty accurately. And, like I said, I didnt go into it thinking it was gonna be a life-altering film.

  • Geez, I really need to start reading who the author of these things are first. I was like…what?! Beet’s a divorcee??

Anyway, I really liked the movie…A LOT. I must add that it was totally biographical for me. It was my entire dating life laid out for me on film. And I filled every pathetic role in that movie…except those that had a happy ending. My mom kept elbowing me at every scene and naming the boyfriend that had done – whatever – to me.

Yeah, I’m a masochist. I enjoyed reliving the humiliations.

    • I was reading along thinking that BEET had written it and then she says that she married the guy. I had to scroll back to see who wrote it.

Sorry for adding my own confusion to the post. It’s Monday…I need more coffee.

  • I just don’t understand how a whole book could be written based on the one line, HJNTIY. I mean, doesn’t that explain it? What’s more to understand than maybe he’s just not that into you??? Maybe i’m overly feminist but this is embarrassing! I mean come on women! So one dude writes a book, cashes in on the obvious, and then a whole movie comes out and some dude cashes in again! Sigh. I didn’t see the movie and i probably won’t, and i’m sure it was cute, but i just can’t bring myself to go see something that makes women sound so pathetic. I think any mature woman should be able to determine whether or not someone is into them. It becomes fairly clear pretty early on when dating.

    • I think what was interesting was the idea that we are trained from early on to believe that there is something wrong with a guy if he doesn’t like you. What the movie pointed out is that any time a guy is mean to you or dumps you or stands you up or whatever, our friends give us excuses to believe so that we aren’t so hard on ourselves. We rationalize the treatment. So it becomes habit to look into all the ways how his behavior could be anything other than the OBVIOUS, that he just doesn’t like you.

Honestly, it was a realization to me. I wish I had read the book 20 years ago (when I was 11?). Unfortunately, not all women are as strong in themselves as you are fortunate to be, Kate.

    • I mean, your post Kate would make more sense if you read the book or watched the movie. It just sounds like you are bashing something, and you don’t even know exactly what it is about, no?

And for the ‘dudes’ cashing in, yeah, but a lot of chicks just got paid for it too. Note the picture above. Who cares? Maybe it makes sense that a guy is writing it. Like tips for females from a male. What’s so crazy about that?

oh and I am not really trying to defend the movie. I think it looks lame….. ha

  • I was thankfully high during HJNTIY. Otherwise, Ginnifer Goodwin’s character would have been completely unbearable. But overall these characters were seriously embarrassing.

  • I’d much rather see HJNTIY than Push, which I reluctantly agreed to see on Vday. It looks ok but number 6?? Getting a little nervous here..

  • wendie, that’s such a great story. as i’m sure you well know by now, you made the right choice! slacker! :)

  • Woo Wendie loved that small story. I am also with a guy I met online, I’m really happy with him!!! :)

  • I LOVE that story. You should tell the whole thing over on your personal blog … I think people would be interested to hear. At least I would! It gives me hope!

  • I met my boyfriend online too! We’ve been together for almost 3 years! YAY!

The whole idea of this book is so lame.

Why does SJ look so awful? What a big oily mess. And Jennifer C needs to EAT something.

  • the book was amazing, haven’t see nthe movie yet but i want to.

also, is jennifer connelly wearing a xmas tree???
