Nothing makes up for a childhood full of irate alcoholism like a trip to the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
At least, that was probably what Alec Baldwin was thinking when he took his daughter, Ireland, to the awards on Sunday night. Alec famously railed against his pre-teen daughter (with Kim Basinger) in a voicemail rant that leaked onto the Internet last year.
Alec took home the SAG award for outstanding male actor in a comedy series, which means his fellow actors have forgiven him, but when Ireland grows up and looks at these pictures, I don’t think she’ll be able to forgive her stylist for not making her wear Spanx with that outfit. A 12-year-old should not look like she has a baby bump, unless her last name is Spears. BAD DRESS, people.
In other SAG news, Heath Ledger took home best supporting, Meryl Streep beat out Angelina, Anne and Kate for best actress (but Kate took home best supporting), Hugh Laurie won for House, Sean Penn for Milk, Tina Fey for 30 Rock, and Slumdog Millionaire won everything else. No, seriously, the full results are here.

For anybody hoping to make money betting on the Oscars (who does that??) the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards may be your source for where to place your bets. Pretty much every SAG nod is mirrored by the corresponding Oscar Nomination. Meaning if you follow the winners and losers tonight, you’re almost guaranteed some sort of pay off. Last year the SAGs were the show with the most celebs due to the writers strike. Hopefully the attendance won’t drop now that that’s over. The SAG awards are playing live right now on TNT and TBS.
Here are some of the arrivals..

A few days ago I got a friend request on MySpace from a pastor. It freaked me out a little (Pastor + MySpace = WTF?!?) but I figured he was an anomaly. Now I see this:
ROME – The Vatican has launched its own YouTube channel in what is being touted as a watershed endorsement by Pope Benedict XVI of the new media age.
The Vatican YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/vaticanit, will feature a selection of short clips of papal messages, produced by the Vatican’s television center and Vatican Radio.
The Pope is then quoted praising the internet as “a gift to humanity” and went on to expound upon the benefits of social networking sites, including Facebook and MySpace. He does warn, however, that “obsessive” internet usage could lead to “isolation”.
Um…WHAT?! Nothing that gave birth to the social phenomenon we now know as Tila Tequila is beneficial to mankind. Facebook and MySpace are fun, I will concur. But I don’t want the Pope or my grandparents using a application that lures people into taking “sexy” pictures of themselves in a grimy bathroom mirror. Also, I think it’s a bit of a travesty for “2 Girls, 1 Cup” and the Pope to be featured in the same place. But who knows, maybe this will help him reach more people or make the internet a holier place. I just can’t help thinking of “Buddy Jesus” from Dogma. Ick.

USC professor Julie Albright conducted a study based on her theory that “makeover” and plastic surgery oriented television promote body dissatisfaction amongst women. She believes that this dissatisfaction is prodding women into going under the knife in order to correct perceived flaws or reach a standard of beauty which has become increasingly difficult to obtain. Albright interviewed 662 college aged women as part of her “Impossible Bodies” study and found that regardless of socioeconomic background or geographic area the attitude persisted.
“Women are being taught to access power and status through their looks,” Albright says.” Before women might buy a Louis Vuitton purse to show off their ‘status.’ Now they might buy new breasts as a sign of their success.”
Do you think this attitude can be blamed on shows like The Swan, and Dr. 90210 or is it just more in the open now because plastic surgery has become a bigger part of our social consciousness?

As a child I loved Golden Girls. It didn’t matter in the least that they were all senior citizens and I was approximately seven years of age. Their unwavering friendship and golden deliciousness crept right into my tiny child-size heart. Now I can relive a portion of that because TV Guide is reporting that Betty White will return to TV this Spring playing “a crazy witch lady that’s always lived in town and who everybody has always been scared of.” in an episode of ’My Name is Earl’!
Betty White looks frail, but she’s spry as a kitten. I almost died when she roasted William Shatner.

I had no idea this was even on.
Last night in Las Vegas Miss Indiana Katie Stam was crowned Miss America 2009. She triumphed over adversity besting laryngitis, sleep deprivation, and 51 contestants to win the crown.

I think by next year they’ll have installed secret cams in their sleeping quarters and plied them with alcohol so it can join the bubbling cauldron that is Reality TV for real. They already moved the show to Vegas. I’m always a little suspicious of Miss America contestants though because they wear so much make-up. I’m sure they’re pretty, but I want some bare faced before and after shots so I can see how badly I’m being lied to.
